Single All the Way is a Christmas romantic comedy film directed by Michael Mayer and starring Michael Urie and Philemon Chambers. The film was released by Netflix on December 2, 2021.[1] It is the first gay holiday romantic comedy film distributed by Netflix.[2]

Upon release, the film received mixed reviews, with many praising Urie and Chambers’ chemistry and the script, while some felt the film was "warmly intentioned" and there wasn’t enough chemistry with the rest of the cast.

Premise

Peter visits his family for the holidays, bringing his best friend Nick who pretends to be his boyfriend. He learns that his mother, Carole, has arranged a blind date between Peter and her spinning instructor James.[1]

Cast

Production

In March 2021, Variety reported that Michael Mayer would direct Single All the Way, a Christmas-themed romantic comedy about gay men, for Netflix. Most of the cast was announced at that time, as well as screenwriter and executive producer Chad Hodge and producer Joel S. Rice.[3] The trailer was released in October 2021.[1] Hodge wrote the character of Aunt Sandy with Coolidge in mind.[4]

Reception

Single All the Way received mixed reviews from critics. Carla Meyer of the San Francisco Chronicle praised Hodge's script and Urie and Philemon's chemistry, favorably comparing the film to Schitt's Creek.[5] In a review for The New York Times, however, Teo Bugbee felt that while the film was "warmly intentioned", there was not enough chemistry between the main characters.[6]
