The Crimson Chin is a comic-book superhero from the animated series The Fairly OddParents. The Crimson Chin is supposedly created by a "forty year old guy that lives with his mom." Timmy Turner, a central character on the show, is an avid Crimson Chin fan. The Chin is voiced by Jay Leno, who is known for having a large chin in real life. The character's name and costume are both overt allusions to the Crimson Avenger. Butch Hartman has said that the Crimson Chin's super powers are all inspired by Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man.[citation needed]
The Crimson Chin, like Captain Proton or Reptar, can be thought of as a metafictional character, in that they are fictional within the fiction franchises for which they were designed.
Fictional history
In reference to his voice actor, the Chin was originally a struggling late-night talk show host who gained his powers by being bitten on the chin by a radioactive celebrity; since then, he has taken the responsibility of protecting the city of Chincinatti (a spoof on Cincinnati), taking the secret identity of Charles Hampton Indigo (C.H.In, or Ch. In for "Charles Indigo") for the local newspaper, The Daily Blabbity. This is an obvious spoof of Spider-Man, as Peter Parker is bitten on the hand by a radioactive spider and he works for the Daily Bugle. Also, his secret identity is a spoof of Clark Kent, Superman's alter ego, who worked as a reporter for the Daily Planet.
One of the Crimson Chin's idiosyncrasies is his tendency to use odd metaphors in his inspirational speeches (e.g. "As long as there is one smoldering ember on the barbecue of justice, you can still cook a mighty steak...of VICTORY!"), which is possibly inspired by another superhero parody, The Tick (coincidentally, his costume design is also similar to The Tick). This quirk is also very similar to the "mustard of doom" speech (and similar rants) delivered by Fawful in the video game, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Crimson Chin has also been seen shouting out the names of superhero-portraying actors as a form of exclamation. Two examples being Adam West (who has guest starred on the show in several episodes) and Frank Gorshin. (West and Gorshin have both appeared on the 1966 Batman TV series together, coincidentally.)
In some of the adventures involving the Crimson Chin, Timmy enters the comic books he is reading (thanks to Cosmo and Wanda) and takes the role of Cleft, the Boy Chin Wonder (a tribute to Robin), and acts as his sidekick. Wanda and Cosmo, in turn, act as Timmy's two dog sidekicks, Ace the Chin-Hound and Clefto (a tribute to Batman's and Superman's respective super-pets, Ace the Bat-Hound and Krypto).
Villains
The Crimson Chin also has a selection of villains in his rogues gallery, consisting of:
"Body of Evil"
- The Bronze Kneecap - This knee-themed evil genius became the Crimson Chin's enemy when the Chin injured Ron Handbone's kneecap at a jai-alai game leaving Handbone in 3rd for the umpteenth time. The Chin rubbed it in his face, so Handbone melted down all his bronze 3rd-place trophies into a high-tech suit (reminicant of Ironman) and became: The Bronze Kneecap! Cleft/Masked Magician asked why he didn't move on. He answered that CC didn't apologize, but the Chin refused to. Kneecap tried to destroy the Chincinatti City Hall by using a giant mechanical leg to kick a giant soccer ball. Another of his secret weapons is a hairy bronze leg-shaped rocket. He also resembles N. Tropy, one of the villains from the PlayStation game Crash Bandicoot. A goof of his secret identity is in 'The Masked Magician', his name is Ron Handbone, but in 'Lights, Camera, Adam!', his name (most likely an alias) is Frank Kneecapra(a reference to the famous director,Frank Capra). The de-facto leader of the Body of Evil, the Kneecap is widely regarded as the Crimson Chin's arch-nemesis although in "The Big Superhero Wish" this position is said to be filled by Nega-Chin whom the Bronze Kneecap was seen taking orders from in "The Return of Mighty-Mom and Dino-Dad." The Bronze Kneecap speaks with a sinister British accent and possesses great physical strength, appearing to be a physical match for the Crimson Chin.
- The Iron Lung - This lung-themed villain is a robot that can blow wind out of its mouth or suck in objects like a vacuum cleaner. He interrupted the Chincinatti 200th Birthday Celebration by blowing the giant cake towards the Statue of Chincinatti. But he was defeated when Cleft produced a 1947 Buick Packard from his utility cleft producing enough exhaust to choke The Lung. Also looks like the first Ironman armor.
- The Copper Cranium - This cranium-themed villain wears a helmet with a large skull on it used to batter down walls. He tried to batter down the wall of the Bank.
- The Gilded Arches - A former child star whose feet and legs grew when he hit puberty, while the rest of him stayed small and scrawney, had a promising career as a movie star, but snapped when the theaters stopped showing his movies. Now he shall try to use his gigantic feet to destroy every theater in Chincinatti, but somehow the Chin keeps getting involved. His weak point, however, is his heel even though the heel is the strongest part of skin on the human body. His weakness could be a reference to Achilles' heel.
- The Brass Knuckles - Coslo Punchloticus is a knuckle-themed villain with powerful punches. He was responsible for the three-state burglary spree of nail salons, glove factories, and the bank (because somebody had to pay for all those manicures and gloves). The Brass Knuckle appears to possess a code of chivalry, refusing to hit "girls."
- The Titanium Toenail - A toe-based villain. He wears a costume that looks like a big toe with the toenail part having a compartment holding titanium nail clippers that launch out titanium toenails (hence his name).
- The Golden Gut - A gut-themed villain (resembling a Sumo wrestler) who can launch out his mechanical gut at his enemies.
- The Giant Doctor Robot - A robotic doctor seen in the Crimson Chin webisode. He later was operated by the Bronze Kneecap, the Iron Lung, the Copper Cranium, the Gilded Arches, and the Brass Knuckles to form the Body of Evil. It had the cranium of Copper Cranium, Iron Lung's torso, Brass Knuckle's arms and hand, Bronze Kneecap's kneecap, and Gilded Arches' legs and feet.
Nega-Chin
The Nega-Chin is the Crimson Chin's evil counterpart from an alternate "Chiniverse". He dresses in a black costume and has a line through the "C" logo, but otherwise appears identical to his heroic counterpart. In addition to the Chin's powers, he has the ability to take away the powers of other heroes, a power he used on Mr. and Mrs. Turner when they gained super-powers. In an episode titled The Big Superhero Wish, he managed to trick Timmy into using his godparents to wish for a world without superheroes, but was eventually thwarted. Like the Chin, he has managed to make it to the "real world" that Timmy lives in several times, and once even managed to find (and threaten) the real life (non-animated) "creator" of the Crimson Chin comics.
The Nega-Chin is a likely a parody of Bizarro and the many other "evil twin" and "alternate dimension" characters from comics. The word "nega" was also used on NegaDuck the evil twin of Darkwing Duck. On an interesting side-note, the Nega-Chin superficially resembles Darkseid from the Superman comics. His Nega-Vision is particularly reminiscent of Darkseid's Omega Effect. This is probably purely coincidental however.
He appears in The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour 3: The Jerkinators, with his Body of Evil. He manages to steal a specter of massive power, but is defeated by Timmy (disguised as Cleft), Cosmo, Wanda and Jimmy Neutron (in disguise as Brain Boy). His body of evil was defeated as well. He is the last regular Fairly OddParents villain to appear in the series, as The Jerkinators was the final episode of both shows.
Other Villains
- H2Olga - A water-based villain. In the Fairly OddParents episode "Crime Wave", she uses a megatsunami to flood Chincinatti but the plan was foiled thanks to the Crimson Chin and a baby. Her appearance is based on of Ursula the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid. Absorbed by a baby's diaper, where the Chin had her trapped. The baby then pooped in the diaper, to Olga's horror.
- Short Fuse - A small bomb-based villain that explodes when someone makes short jokes about him. A henchman of the Nega-chin.
- Spatula Woman - A villainess armed with a large spatula.
- Country Boy - A farm-based villain with a barn mask and deadly pig grenades.
- Mike the Evil Living Building - Used by the Nega-Chin to conquer Dimmsdale, although his only purpose was to hide Bull-E, Doctor Crocktopus, and the Baby Shredder. (Probably conceived as a parody of Ego the Living Planet.)
- Craig the Evil Living Trash Can - Only mentioned by the Nega-Chin.
- The Flying Squirrel
- Iron Maiden - A large, robotic maid with an immense arsenal of weaponry, including spiked missiles. Her name comes from the Earth X character with the same name, although it's possible that the creator did not know about her, and merely named her after Iron Man. It's also likely that the name derives from the heavy metal band Iron Maiden, since the Crimson Chin taunts her saying, "Your days of heavy metal terror are over, Iron Maiden!"
- Bull-E - Francis' supervillain form with the strength and horns of a bull. Bull-E's name, appearance and attributes are a pun off the word bully, which Francis really is (plus as Francis points out the "E" in his name is "the second letter in 'death', and the third one in 'die'!). His persona is also a parody of Wildebeest from the Teen Titans and slightly the Incredible Hulk from Marvel Comics. He appears in The Big Superhero Wish.
- The Baby Shredder - Vicky's supervillain form with super sharp retractable claws and super "sharp tongue". Her claws and costume are based on Wolverine from the X-Men comic series, she spins like the Tasmanian Devil from the Warner Brothers cartoons, and the super "sharp tongue" is a reference to the Alien series of movies. Her name is obviousliy a combination of the word "Baby Sitter" and "Shredder" from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. She appears in The Big Superhero Wish.
- Dr. Crocktopus - Denzel Q. Crocker's supervillain counterpart with tentacles that can shoot out F's. He's the master of mystical arts. He seems to be an amalgam of Dr. Strange and Doctor Octopus; his tentacles and name are based on Doctor Octopus of the Spider-Man comic series, and his mastery over magic and certain elements of his costume are based on Dr. Strange. One of his four arms is not mechanical. He appears in The Big Superhero Wish.
- Nega-Cleft the Boy Chin Nightmare - Cleft's evil counterpart, which is seen in the Fairly Odd Parents game for Gameboy Advance, Clash With The Anti-World. Probrably it's the comic version of Nega-Timmy, from the episode "Nega-Timmy".
- Dogzilla - Dogzilla (an obvious spoof of Godzilla) appears when Catman came into the Chin's webisode and took over the role of superhero, Timmy wished up a gigantic robotic dog, equipped with fleas, a hose, and an assortment of other things that cats hate. And all to get Catman and the Chin to work together.
- The Platinum Princess The secret identity of pop star Britney Britney (an obvious spoof of Britney Spears). She has a device that shoots out CDs. She is actually an enemy of Mr. Bickles but the crimson chin may have fought her for it is not known what happened to her. She may be a spoof of the Silver Surfer
Other Allies
Most of these people appear in The Big Superhero Wish:
- The Sonic Youth - Sanjay's superhero form with sonic powers is based on Banshee from the X-Men comic series, a very powerful sonic scream. His name is based on the rock band of the same name.
- Professor AJ - A.J.'s superhero form with mind control, teleportation, and force field creating powers. His mind control powers, name and hover chair are based on Professor X from the X-Men comic series.
- Wonder Gal - Trixie Tang's superhero form that is super fast, super strong and super popular. Her name and outfit based on Wonder Woman.
- Hawk Gal - Veronica's superhero form with the speed and ability of a hawk. Not much of a superhero. Her name, outfit and mace weapon are based on Hawkgirl (possibly the version from the 2001 Justice League animated series).
- Catman - Crazy TV's Adam West believes that he is the real Catman: A half cat super hero who protects the streets from the Doberman of Doom, Ratman, and Dogzilla (whom he's afraid of). He is a parody of Batman.
- Matter Muncher Lad - Chester McBadbat's superhero form. His power is being able to chew through things with the help of his braces, which have become superpowered with drill bits and buzz saws. Most likely based on Matter-Eater Lad. The majority of the words he says (and thinks) are "munchmunchmunchmunchmunchmunchmunch."
- The Bouncing Boil - Elmer's superhero form. He can bounce up and down on his boil. Most likely based on Bouncing Boy.
- Brain Boy - Jimmy Neutron's alter ego in The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour 3: The Jerkinator
- Crash Nebula - Mild-mannered Sprick Speevak, a young boy from an Earth farm, was sent to a Space School. There, he opened a space vent, sending one of his classmates hurtling into the airless vacuum. Donning the high-tech Crash suit, he saved her from a black hole. He then continued to save people under the persona of "Crash Nebula." Once, he even met the Crimson Chin in a TV special fitting titled The Crimson Chin Meets Crash Nebula.
- Captain Cosmo and Wanda Woman - Cosmo and Wanda's super hero forms. Appeared in The Fairly OddParents: Breakin' Da Rules and The Fairly OddParents: Shadow Showdown.
Powers and abilities
The Crimson Chin is usually shown as having the generic variety of superhero abilities. He possesses invulnerability, superhuman strength and speed, flight, and heat vision.
Other versions of the Crimson Chin
- The 1930s Pulp Fiction Chin - A version that has a uniform similar to The Rocketeer.
- The 1940s World War II Sergeant Chin - A version with an army helmet and pants, a red tank top and a five o'clock shadow.
- The 1950s Square-Jawed Commie Buster Chin - A version that looks like Superman with the American flag on the inside of his cape.
- The 1960s Psychedelic Chin - A hippie version of the chin.
- The 1970s Disco Chin - A version with a blonde afro, medallion and tight polyester bodysuit.
- The 1980s Overly Muscular Weapons-Toting Chin - Also known as The Super Edgy 1985 Crimson Chin, he's a version that has bad teeth and plenty of weapons. His comic book was canceled because he swore in it. He's a parody of Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and also bears similarities to The Punisher, Spawn, Cable, and Wolverine.
- The 1990s Grunge Chin - A grunge rock version of the Chin complete with acoustic guitar.
- The New Millennium Crimson Chin - A silver, metallic version that looks like the traditional version of the chin (the silver body and his movement when he enters is similar to Silver Surfer). This is a reference to DC's attempt to update Superman for the new millennium by making him an electric energy being, and to the foil covers used for many '90s comic books.
- Movie Crimson Chin - A movie is made about the Crimson Chin, in which Adam West portrays him.
It is interesting to note that the original Crimson Chin does not fall in the 1990's-New Millennium range, which makes him a dateless version.
Several of these Chins cause a continuity error for the series, as the creator of the Crimson Chin is described as "Some forty-year-old dude who lives with his mom" and the first Crimson Chin dates back more than 70 years. However this was probably an attempt to spoof comics.
