Rasaldar-major was originally a cavalry officer of the British Indian Army, the rank was created in 1886 - a rasaldar-major was the most senior rasaldar (army rank equivalent to a captain) of the regiment.[1] The rank was a Viceroy's commissioned officer in the cavalry.

Today a rasaldar-major is the senior junior commissioned officer in the Indian Army and Pakistan Army armoured corps, and remount and veterinary corps.

It carries the same responsibilities and insignia as the infantry subedar-major.
