Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach is a 2021 survival horror video game developed by Steel Wool Studios and published by ScottGames. It is the eighth main installment in the Five Nights at Freddy's series and the thirteenth installment overall, taking place after the events of Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted.[1][2] The game released on December 16, 2021, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, while ports for other platforms will be releasing sometime later.[3][4] Unlike most other installments in the franchise, the game takes place in a mall, while other installments typically take place in a pizzeria, and will feature a single night of survival at the mall, instead of five.

Gameplay

The player takes control of a young boy named Gregory, who is locked in a large shopping mall filled with murderous animatronics and must complete numerous missions to survive until unknown in order to escape. The animatronics found throughout the mall include Glamrock Freddy, Glamrock Chica, Montgomery Gator, Roxanne Wolf, Sunndrop and his nighttime counterpart Moondrop/ daycare attendant and DJ Music Man. The player will also encounter other types of enemies, which consists of Vanny, a woman dressed in a rabbit costume, employee robots called Staff Bots that can alert enemies to Gregory's location if they spot him, and a security guard named Vanessa. All enemies will get stronger as the night progresses, so the player must adapt to their surroundings in order to survive. Gregory can hide to avoid enemies or throw objects to distract them. Running drains stamina and if it's low, Gregory will not be able to move very fast. Some confrontations will require the use of strategy in order to avoid being caught. Gregory has a flashlight that he can use to see in dark places and carries a device called a "Faz-Watch" on his wrist, where he can access the missions, camera system, and his location in the mall. However, the flashlight and watch have limited power and need to be recharged frequently. There are also two kinds of weapons that can be used to temporally stun enemies: the "Faz-Cam" and the "Fazblaster". The Faz-Cam can stun all enemies in front of the player, but it has a limited number of uses before requiring a recharge. The Fazblaster is stronger than the Faz-Cam and has unlimited power, but it is more difficult to use, since the Fazblaster requires a direct headshot.

Glamrock Freddy is the only animatronic who will help Gregory in the game. Freddy has a compartment called the "birthday-cake-hatch" in his stomach for Gregory to hide in. While inside Freddy, Gregory can see through Freddy's eyes and can use him to get past other animatronics without trouble. However, Freddy has limited battery power so if he runs out, he will need to recharge at a charging station. Freddy can also give Gregory advice, shortcuts, or warnings about the challenges and enemies he will face in the mall.

There are multiple paths and endings depending on the outcome. Office escapes are also featured. Unlike previous games, this game allows free roaming, combat, features boss battles (some are optional), and instead of five nights, the entire game takes place in a single night that lasts much longer than six hours. Minigames are also featured as arcade games. [5]

Plot

A young boy named Gregory is trapped in a large shopping mall called Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex after it locks down for the night, where he finds himself being hunted down by the mall's Glamrock animatronics, employee robots called Staff Bots, a security guard named Vanessa, and a female rabbit mascot named Vanny, who is a brainwashed follower of Glitchtrap (both of which previously appeared in Help Wanted). However, Glamrock Freddy is the only animatronic that is not corrupted by Glitchtrap and Vanny. Gregory must work with Freddy to solve puzzles, complete missions, elude enemies, defeat bosses, uncover the mall's secrets, and take down Vanny and Glitchtrap in order to survive the night until 6:00 a.m. and escape the mall.

Development and release

On August 8, 2019, on the first game's fifth anniversary, Scott Cawthon posted a new teaser on his website, teasing the eighth installment for the series. The teaser depicts a modernized shopping mall containing a laser tag arena, an arcade, a cinema and a Freddy Fazbear's Pizza restaurant; in the main square, '80s-style versions of Freddy, Chica, and two new animatronics can be seen playing for an excited crowd. Throughout the following months, various characters in the game were shown throughout several teasers such as the new animatronics and the character Vanny from Help Wanted. On April 21, 2020, the characters' names were leaked from Funko's list of upcoming products and the title was revealed to be Five Nights at Freddy's: Pizza Plex. The following day, Cawthon confirmed the leaks, but that the title is not official. Cawthon also announced that the game was scheduled to be released in late 2020.[1]

On September 16, 2020, a teaser trailer for the game was launched during the PlayStation 5 Showcase event, revealing new rooms along with the main lobby and new animatronics. At the end of the presentation, it was announced that the game would be released on PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, and may come to other platforms at a later date.[2] However, on November 17, Cawthon announced that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and new additions to the game, the game had been delayed to early 2021.[6]

On January 12, 2021, during Nvidia's GeForce RTX: Game On event, a new teaser trailer for the game was released, showing additional areas in the game. On February 25, during Sony Interactive Entertainment's State of Play live stream, a new trailer was released, which showed a mix of gameplay and cinematics, showcasing various areas and characters in the game. On April 28, Cawthon announced that, due to the unexpected size of the game, it had been again delayed to late 2021.[7] Due to this delay, Cawthon released a freeware beat 'em up spin-off game titled Security Breach: Fury's Rage.[8]

On October 27, 2021, during a PlayStation State of Play, a new trailer was showcased, featuring the other Glamrock animatronics as well as gameplay and cutscenes, in addition to showcasing mechanics completely new to the series. The game's release date was also revealed to be December 16, 2021 at 2.00 pm.[9][10]

Marketing

On September 1, 2021, Steel Wool launched a new website, titled Security Breach TV, to host new teasers for Security Breach.[citation needed] Just a week later on September 7, the first video teaser was posted on Security Breach TV in the style of an old-fashion cartoon, called Freddy and Friends: On Tour, featuring the main four characters from the original game. Throughout the following months, the website was updated with more video teasers containing secret images and teasers inside the videos.

Spin-off

One April 28, 2021, before the release of Security Breach, a side-scrolling beat 'em up game titled Security Breach: Fury's Rage was created and released by Scott Cawthon and was made available on Game Jolt for free. The game was published as an apology for the second delay of Security Breach.[8]

Tie-in media and merchandise

Before the release of Security Breach, on October 30, 2020, Funko released a line of action figures of the Glamrock animatronics and collectible mystery minis.[1] On May 20, 2021, Funko also released a 12" statue of Glamrock Freddy and the protagonist Gregory and a statue of the antagonist Vanny and the night guard Vanessa.[11]
