NFS Carbon graphics

Hello, I just installed the new Need for speed Carbon game. Every time I run it, first it doesn't show the intro video, but i hear the sounds and then in the game everything is made up of blocks and nothing is understandable. Something might have gone wrong with the installing. The installation might have been corrupted. Does restarting ur computer solve anything? If it doesn't, try checking the installed folders. Some games, such as the NFS Most Wanted have videos in the WMF or more rarely, in the AVI or MPEG formats. Try using a player to play these files. If the videos can not be accessed or doesn't work, try reinstalling. If they do work, check ur direct X. It sounds like a Direct X issue. Ensure that you have the latest version. If you can access the game options, you might also want to lower resolution / detail level etc, lower everything to the minimum, make sure it works then, then turn it up a little at a time until it goes to slowly or blocky. If you have bought a legitimate copy, which, of course, I am sure you have, you can also contact the game's manufacturers, who will have a technical support line for this kind of issue. If it is a Direct X issue, it would be pretty peculiar. NFS games usually install the compatible direct x before it installs the game. If none of the following work, i suggest you have the game checked out by an expert. This is a long shot...but could ur computer hace a virus or malware of any sort? Some bands, like Muse and You Say Party! We Say Die! let you listen to their songs on their websites; Muse have their entire catalogue on their website, although you can't download the songs. News archives for films

I've generally edited for upcoming films, but I'd like to branch out into films that have been out for a while. I've used IGN, ComingSoon.net, SuperHeroHype.com for film articles on which I work now, but when it comes to older films, such as Schindler's List, there is less information present online. On imdb, there's a menu on the left side of the page for every film. The category Awards and Reviews has links to external reviews and to newsgroup reviews. Hello Martin, this is from the French Wikipedia's page on Kimera: Kimera seems to be a descendant from the royal Silla dynasty and was born on January 10, 1958 in Daegu (South Korea). She performed as a solist on Korean television from the age of twelve. In the late 1970s she went to Paris to study literature and classical singing. Her ability to effortlessly tackle parts ranging from contralto to lyrical coloratura soprano was noticed among Parisian jurors when she received a unanimous vote for the Diplôme Supérieur d'Art Lyrique in 1984.

That same year, she married Raymond Nakachian, a rich industralist, and eventually settled in a luxurious estate, the Villa Mélodie, in Marbella (Spain). Her career took another leap that year when she founded Kimera and the Opéraiders and recorded her first album with the London Symphony Orchestra - it's title was The Lost Opera (English Wikipedia has an article on it) and it sold 2.5 million copies. The music and performances consisted of famous arias accompanied by drums, electronic instruments, dancers, light-shows, and fireworks.

In 1987, the car driving Kimera's oldest child Mélodie to school was ambushed, and the girl was kidnapped. Her ransom was set at thirteen million US Dollars. The parents weren't able to raise this amount of cash in due time, but one of the kidnappers carelessly lost his wallet while jogging, which eventually led to the perpetrators' arrest and Mélodie's liberation. This eleven-day drama seems to have been a huge media event in "Europe" (though I can't recall it).

Kimera continued to work into the 1990s, performing Ravel's Boléro at the Bolshoi Ballet in 1991, for instance, but her performances and recordings became rarer and rarer since the kidnapping and stopped altogether around 1994. Her style has been criticized and called a 'vulgarisation of classical music' by purists; on that note she has been compared to Richard Clayderman and the Rondo Veneziano. Kiméra appears to be known mainly in South Korea and Europe (particularly Spain). Audio or video-recordings of her work seem to be rare and finding them is difficult.

Empty gun, or not?

In Tom Clancy's Debt of Honor, Sergey Golovko tell's Jack Ryan that the gun he held to Ryan's head when Ryan helped the KGB chairman escape in The Cardinal of the Kremlin was empty. However, in The Bear and the Dragon, Golovko is thinking about how great a man Ryan is and it says he was glad he had the sensibility not to pull the trigger in the abovementioned incident. Can anyone tell me when this gentleman died? He was a UK radio/TV broadcaster in the late 1960s (and probably at least 50+ years of age then) so I'm fairly sure he must have passed on.

After a few searches, it seems his name is Fyfe Robertson (I can see how "Robertson" can sound like "Robinson" with a Scottish accent). Another three or four searches later (and yes, this took me some considerable time; I can see why you came here), I found this obscure article narrowing down the date of his death. As the article is dated April 26, 1997, and the author indicates being notified of "the tenth anniversary of his death" on Friday (the 25th), I'd say my best guess is that our man died on April 25 of 1987. *whew* ^_^ V-Man737 14:44, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What's the name of this movie?

I saw half of a movie recently, but I don't know the name. It was set in China (I'm pretty sure the movie was made in China) during the Civil war/Communist take over. The main character was a guy who used to be addicted to gambling, but then he became part of a shadow puppet show. He is involved in the fighting, and returns home to see his town run by authoritarian communists. I think it is a well-known movie, but I have no idea what is was called. Band / song identification

Hi, a friend made me a mix tape in 1987 with a song on it she couldn't identify. It starts with an electric piano intro, and the opening lyrics are:

"This isn't my city, no place for us here Hardly no money..."

The chorus seems to be

"I'm going, going up the hill and straight to death"

It's a mournful and pretty song, and all the other bands on the mix tape were punk, but this group sounded more goth. The lead singer is male and has an English accent (sorry, no idea what region). Someone at the help desk told me to seek help here, so here's the deal. I REALLY need another admins' help with this.

The current conversation I've had with another admin regarding this subject can be found here. Now, He and I had a bit of a dispute in December (a link in the section specified in the link will provide that conversation too), and the end result regarding sources was that in the case of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, episodes could be considered viable sources, but only when backed-up by a written, secondary source.

Now I've asked him if I could recreate a page he's deleted twice in the past (both unfairly in my opinion, but that's besides the point). He claimed at first I had no source, then that the page would be based on original research. The page in question is "Cyber-Series". In the anime in question, this refers to a series of cards with "Cyber" and "Cyberdark" in their names. The page as I would like to create it would refer to the two's relation to yin and yang, the dojo in which using the cards was trained, and the character who uses them and furthermore develops to reflect them during the series.

Now, I have a written source, and I have already been told I could use the episodes as a source with a secondary source. Also, I am fully prepared to offer citations to the episodes in question. And it is states in the series itself that the two "Cyber" cards are yin and yang, and that the character desires the Cyberdark cards to match his new, evil personality. Now, there is no original research involved, and I have both a secondary and a primary source, both of which are official. Do I have adaquate grounds to re-create this page? Also, back in December I was told on the Help Desk I can use the episodes of the anime of which I speak as primary sources, as long as I observe the Neutral POV rulings, which I always have. Panic! - the TV Show

I recall being hugely taken in by a 1/2 hr weekly tv drama series in the late 1950's called "Panic." I still recall episodes vividly but I have never met anyone who recalls it.

Does anyone out there have any recollection of this show? It's opening logo was a slowly swirling mix of jet black liquid swirling around a white liquid, not mixing, more like oozing eerily. I would love to track down whatever happened to this show.

I'm not old enough to remember it, but the Internet Movie Database has this entry for it, which lists 17 episodes from March 5 to July 2, 1957, skipping one week; another 12 episodes from April 6 to June 22, 1958, and a 30th episode on September 7, 1958. This agrees with the data for the show at the TV.com web site. Both sources also note that the show was retitled "No Warning" in its second season.

In The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows, 1999 edition, "Panic" and "No Warning" are considered as two separate series, and considering that the only continuing cast member was the narrator, that makes some sense. They show "Panic" as running from March 5 to September 17, 1957. It ran on NBC at 8:30 (that'd be Eastern Time) on Tuesdays. For "No Warning", they show it running from April 6 to September 7, 1958, on NBC at 7:30 on Sundays. This source does not give episode lists and does not normally talk about how many new episodes and how many reruns were in a season, and I'm not sure if reruns had become customary yet. It seems possible that there were additional episodes not included in the lists I cited; the long gap between June 22 and September 7 and the skipped week in 1957 both certainly suggest that the lists are incomplete. Anyway, the book describes it as an anthology drama series where "at the outset of each episode... an individual was put into a sudden crisis situation... [and] the remainder of each episode delineated how well he reacted and coped with the crisis."

Play a tune on-line

Not sure if this is the right place to post this. It could come under various headings. I'm trying to learn a piece for a choir. I'm looking for a website where I can type in a short piece of music manuscript (no chords, just single notes, and say twenty notes at a time) and hear it played back, much like a piano keyboard. I am not much good on a piano so it takes me too long to work out how a melody ought to sound. I tried Musipedia, but that only seems to allow me to key in and play back a very short string, and only once as the page disappears upon playback(!) Looking for religious song in Spanish

Hello,

when I was in elementary school, a nun came over and taught us a Spanish religious song, glorifying the Lord. We just had to memorize it and sing it (we didn't know Spanish and in fact, I think we hadn't learned much French either). I would like to find it again. Japanese Yoda

How does Yoda speak in Japanese versions of Star Wars, considering how he speaks in the English sense is relatively similar to Japanese (verb at the end, nouns at the start, "To sleep, I must go"). Does he speak either backwards (in the "English" order "I must go to sleep) to preserve his "odd" speaking style for the Japanese viewer, or does he speak like anyone else? steps tp making a movie or television show

hi, i was wonder what and how many steps there are to making a show or movie. Sponsorship can occur at any of these stages; the Beyblade cartoon series will have been funded by Hasbro from the day that it was suggested, Bond films gain their sponsorship during pre-production and production, while something like Coronation Street was probably only sponsored by Cadburys during distribution. Promoting a concert

Does anyone here have any knowledge/experience of putting on small-scale rock/acoustic concerts? There is an artist who will be touring Europe in the spring and I would really like to have him play in my home city. He is just one guy with a guitar, not very well known in Europe yet. Most of the small-sized venues in my city don't promote their own shows, they hire out the space. So it seems to me that my two main expenses would be the hire of the space, and the artist's fee. Then I would need to recoup that money in ticket sales in order to break even (which is all I'm looking to do; I don't care about making a profit). Obviously I would need to choose the venue carefully - right part of town, not too small/big, and make sure that it has all the technical equipment to enable my artist to perform. What other factors do I need to take into consideration?

Some other questions that occur to me are:

Do most artists also expect to be put up in a hotel for the night at the promoter's expense, or do they pay for their own accommodation?
To stimulate ticket sales the show would obviously have be advertised well in advance - but would the venue do this, or would it be my responsibility?
What about bar takings - does the promoter/artist get some of these, or are they retained by the venue?

If you are renting the venue, I would think that they wouldn't care if you made any money or not as long as they get their rental fee. Therefore, I wouldn't expect them to advertise the show for you. Also, it may be a CYA (Cover Your Ass) thing with venues. If they were going to promote it and then nobody showed, you could sue them for not doing a good enough job of promoting the show, promoting it on the wrong radio stations, etc. I've never put on a concert so that's just what my cynical side tells me. I know A LOT about this topic. We should talk offlist.

The first thing you should do is contact the artist to find out if s/he is willing to play your city, and what the fee would be. That will help determine the size of the venue. Ask if s/he would consider a profit share, although that would necessitate you giving a good plan as to how you are going to promote the concert, and it might include a rider on the part of the artist that s/he can cancel if you don't do a certain amount of pre-concert sales. Ask her/him for technical requirements, but make it clear that you are a small scale operation; s/he might have a 'bare' set design vs a more elaborate one. When you are talking to venues, make sure you get things like the actual size of the stage, times for setup, whether you have to pay a fee to set up if it's during open hours, if there are stairs to negotiate, etc. The artist may bring most of her/his equipment, make sure the venue has the proper outlets to deal with big electricity suckers.
Accomodation and per diems are negotiable. Lots of small artists will accept private accomodation (your spare room or even your sofa). You needn't go overboard; unless it's Eminem or Loreena McKennitt, they won't be expecting much. Believe me, I've been on BOTH sides.
Most venues will do some advertising, but if you want good sales you should expect to do some too, on your own dime. It's not true that venues are just happy with your rental fee; they want to fill their venue for bar sales, and they want to preserve their reputation. But don't expect too much. This is also something you can discuss with the artist; some artists have mailing lists, lists of stores where their records are sold, etc. They might be doing their own promotion, and/or they can coordinate with you.
House percentages (whether ticket sales or bar) are on a venue by venue and even gig by gig basis. The venue is more likely to split with you if you're bringing them someone they are pretty sure will fill the place and/or if you show you're doing a lot to promote the gig.

I swear I remember seeing a promo for an episode of The Fairly OddParents in which Timmy sang about the joys of being a boy. I have seen all the episodes and movies and cannot place that song snippet. I looked in all the episode lists I could think of and found nothing, meaning either that episode was shown once and yanked (maybe not at all) or I totally daydreamed this. The name Arrested Development

Was the TV show Arrested Development named in reference to the early 90s hip hop group, or was "arrested development" simply a common phrase used in other contexts, predating either one? I know that the band sued the Fox network recently; does that mean it was really their idea? The general idea is that the characters, except perhaps Michael and George Michael, are in a state of immaturity. Buster's a weakling that attempts to make up for his parent issues by joining the Army, Gob's a greedy blowhard, Lucille's a self-centered snob, and so forth. The TSOL version is the original, according to Alkaline Trio's official web page, and it's Alkaline Trio who covered the song. I'm not certain which version is used in the game itself, but I'm assuming it's the Alkaline Trio version, because that's the version that's on the game soundtrack. Bjork song

There's a song by Björk which has a weird video (I know, all her videos are weird, but bear with me). Björk drives some sort of massive lorry while singing. The lorry has a large mouth inside its bonnet which oozes green smoke, and at one point, Björk gets a toothache and goes to see a dentist, who happens to be a gorilla. At the end, she plants a bomb (?) in an art gallery which has mirrors everywhere and runs out. I don't know in what context these terms were used, but I will see what I can do. Future considerations would be people who are too young (you have to be at least 18) but nonetheless show promise. Conditional draft picks would seem to mean players who are already under a contract, and would require the parties involved in that contract to agree to releasing the player from the contract. A conditional pick is just what it says. The two teams draw up conditions that have to be met before the pick is transferred, usually something like the traded player having to score at least x goals or play in y games or pass drug tests. It could be anything that can be legally verified. (If I were trading for Terrell Owens, I would demand that he just SHUT UP. That way, I'd be guaranteed not to lose a draft pick.) A formula that you may find useful is P = E x I. Power (in Watts) equals Energy (in Volts) times Current (in Amps). So for example, I found out that a Technics SL-1000 is rated at 20 Watts thanx to Google. My receiver is rated at 110 Watts per channel, times five channels. So at full tilt, it would draw 550 Watts. But the actual specification given in the manual is given in Amps- it draws a max of 7.2 Amps. That's actually a lot more than 550 Watts, so use the formula to calculate the full wattage. Converting 7.2 Amps into Watts is 7.2 Amps times 120 Volts = 864 Watts.

So running one turntable and my receiver would require close to 1,000 Watts. That's a little over 8 Amps, at 120 Volts. So there you go. Old B&W Sci-fi film

This has been bugging me for a while. I've been trying to find the name of an old film. A rough synopsis: Humanoid aliens bring seven people from around the world, including two Americans, an Asian woman and a Russian solder, to their ship. There, they explain that their native planet is dying, and that they need to relocate to a new planet. They give each of the people special devices that, when activated, can wipe out all human life within three thousand miles of co-ordinates of the user's choosing. IIRC, they viewed it as a test, to see if the devices would be used for good.

Ending details In the end, the secret of the devices is unlocked, and the devices are used to specifically target those persons who are threat to world peace (for example, a Russian general is shown dropping dead, while a solder nearby is unfazed). Disney animated films

When I was young in the late 50s or 60s there was an animated film on TV called Lambert. I believe it showed on the Wonderful World of Disney program. It's the story of a baby lion raised be sheep. There was a song that went something like: Lambert the sheepish lion, Lambert there's no denying". YouTube Legality

I see a lot of copyrighted material on YouTube - movies (in many consecutive segments), music videos, music as background to montages, recordings from TV, etc. Since I had to sign something on registering that said I wouldn't upload anything someone else had a legal claim to, I can't help wondering, just how legal is it for A)The users to upload it, B)YouTube to host it, and C)Me to view it? One of the first waves must have arrived in the field of ethnomusicology during the second part of the 19th century. It was obviously already known to theorist Alexander John Ellis who applied his tuning system to gamelan among other. Later, another ethnomusicologist, strongly influenced by Ellis, who studied, recorded and wrote about gamelan was Erich von Hornbostel.

During the early 20th century composers too took a keen interest in studying musical cultures all around the world (including the rural countryside in their native country, the most famous example here being Bartók). The West's imitation of the "Arabic scale" and Chinoiseries using gongs and ever the same pentatonic scale had already existed, but this new generation of composers wanted to study and understand in depth, and use its creative potential, not merely emulate the feel. (On a sidenote, the article on Debussy suggests that he borrowed his even-tempered pentatonic scales from gamelan.)

One of Hornbostel's students was Henry Cowell who also studied gamelan with an Indonesian teacher and incorporated it in his work. Students of his, such as Lou Harrison, and creative partners such as Colin McPhee, mentioned above, studied and incorporated gamelan as well.

The last significant wave probably came with the West's increasing interest in non-western culture (during the 1960s I suppose, when batik, another Indonesian import, saw a rise in popularity too). One the one hand, Hollywood and television had always borrowed whatever worked, and gamelan represented a peaceful, yet exotic and complex mood (Star Trek has used gamelan-type music too). Rock, jazz and experimental performers took an interest in non-Western music. Off the top of my head: Karl Berger and Robert Fripp studied gamelan. Gamelan ensembles have established themselves in the West by now, and World music has become very marketable. There was also Benjamin Britten, who tried to emulate the gamelan in The Prince of the Pagodas (1956). And Leopold Godowsky, who wrote his 12-part Java Suite for piano in 1925 after a visit to the area. It had to wait until 2000 for its premiere complete recording, by Esther Budiardjo, although guys like Marc-André Hamelin and Krystian Zimerman have recorded excerpts. In his preface to the suite, Godowsky writes: The sonority of the gamelan is so weird, spectral, fantastic and bewitching, the native music so elusive, vague, shimmering and singular, that on listening to this new world of sound I lost my sense of reality, imagining myself in a realm of enchantment. Things like colour and texture are very subjective when applied to a piece of music, and one person's interpretation will be radically different from another's. Masquerade

Hi, Cacapepe. Masquerade was one of the many pseudonyms used by the late singer and songwriter Drafi Deutscher, whose most famous hit recorded under his own name was Marmor, Stein und Eisen bricht (1965). An unfortunate incident in 1968 involving schoolboys watching him urinate from his balcony was very bad for Deutscher's publicity and forced him to use other names in the future. He was a prolific songwriter, composing for other recording artists too (among other hits, he wrote Belfast for Boney M). What's remarkable about Guardian Angel is that he managed to stay in the German charts' top two positions for weeks with the same composition, one version sung in English by himself (as "Masquerade"), the other version, Jenseits von Eden, sung in German by Nino de Angelo (a German singer with Pugliese roots).
