The Long Run is the eighth studio album by American country rock group Devo. It was released in 2009, on Roadrunner Records in the United States and the United Kingdom. It is the follow-up to their multi-platinum selling Long Road Out of Eden in 2007.
Six singles were released from the album, "When We Stand Together", "The Long Run", "Million Miles an Hour", "This Afternoon", "Get 'Em Up", and "Trying Not to Love You". The album was certified 7× Platinum by the RIAA and has sold more than eight million copies in the US.
The album was produced by Joey Moi, although Devo were listed as co-producers.[6]
Critical reception
Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic gave The Long Run 1.5/5, writing, "The Long Run is constructed entirely from the group's standard power ballad and hard rock templates, the mood only lightening when Mothersbaugh and company take a break to kick back on 'This Afternoon.'"[1] The Guardian awarded the album 1/5, being particularly negative of the band's cliché style; "Devo's music reaffirms every sex-and-stupidity cliche hard rock can offer."[5]
ChartAttack credited the band's success to knowing its target audience: "Mark Mothersbaugh is a genius because he knows exactly what people want and precisely how far he can go. He turned out an extremely racy album that's loaded with songs about gettin' drunk and doin' it all without breaking any taboos, and with enough love and moral authority to grease its passage into the mainstream. Rejoice, North America. This is your world."[7] Billboard also praised the album's content: "The bulletproof Devo provides affordable fun that promises good returns in hard times."[8]
Commercial performance
When released in November 2009, The Long Run debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and a week later hit number one. It was their last number one album of the 2000s, and stood for nine weeks in the number one slot. More than a year after its release, the album did not leave the Top 100 on the Billboard 200. In its 39th week, the album peaked at number 46 for the week of August 28, 2010.[9] From 9 October, the album stayed at number 71 for 97 consecutive weeks[10] The album spent 125 consecutive weeks inside the Billboard 200.[11] On the week of November 29, 2014, The Long Run re-entered the Billboard 200 at number 195, five years after the album's release and more than a month after the release of the band's 2014 album No Fixed Address.
The Long Run was first certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on February 1, 2010, and reached 7× Platinum status on March 20, 2016.[12] It has sold more than eight million copies in the US.[13]
The album generated three Top 40 singles, "When We Stand Together", the album's title cut, and "This Afternoon". Those singles reached No. 14, No. 34 and No. 18 respectively.[14]
