Maurice Kemp (born February 2, 1991) is an American basketball player who plays the power forward position.[1] He plays for Maccabi Rishon LeZion in the Israeli Premier League.

Early life

His parents are Valerie and Maurice Kemp, Sr., and he has three siblings.[2] Kemp grew up in Miami, Florida, and Pembroke Pines, Florida.[3][4]

Kemp attended Miami Dade Christian Academy ('09), and played for the basketball team.[2] As a senior, he averaged 26 points and 11 rebounds a game. He was name second-team All State and first-team All County as a senior.[2] He was also on the high school track and field team.[2]

He is 6-8 (203 cm) tall, and Kemp weighs 190 pounds (86 kg).[2][1][5]

College

Kemp attended Alabama A&M from 2009-10, playing for the Alabama A&M Bulldogs basketball team.[2] He averaged 5.5 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.[2] He shot 47.8% from the floor, and 34.8% from the 3-point line.[2]

He then attended Miami Dade College from 2010-11.[2] Playing small forward for the Sharks basketball team, Kemp averaged 16.9 points and 9.9 rebounds (ranking 17th nationally) per game.[2][3] He shot 59% from the floor, 52% behind the 3-point line, and 65% from the free throw line.[2] He averaged 1.8 assists, 1.8 blocks, and 1.5 steals per game.[2] He was named first-team All-Florida Community College Activities Association.[2]

Kemp then attended East Carolina University (ECU; '13), where he majored in child development and family relations, and played basketball for the East Carolina Pirates men's basketball team as a junior in 2011-12.[2] He averaged 10.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.[2] He shot .779% from the free throw line (7th in Conference USA), and his 2.4 offensive rebounds per game were 10th in the conference.[6] His 88.9% shooting from the free throw line during league play was the best in the conference.[2] He was a unanimous selection to the Conference USA Men's Basketball All-Academic Team.[2]

As a senior at ECU in 2012-13, Kemp led Conference USA in scoring with 18.9 points per game (becoming the first ECU player to lead the conference in scoring), and in points (660).[2][6] He was 2nd in the conference in field goals (231; 15th in the NCAA), 2-point field goals (215; 9th in the NCAA), and free throws (182), 4th in field goal percentage (.505), 4th in defensive rebounds (193), 5th in steals (61) and steals per game (1.1), 6th in rebounding (280), 7th in free throw percentage (.755), 9th in blocks per game (1.1), and 10th in offensive rebounds (87) and blocks (39).[6][2] He became the third player in school history to score over 600 points in a season, and established new school single-season records for free throws made (182), free throw attempts (241) and minutes played (1,202).[2] He became the first player in school history to be named First Team All-Conference USA, and was also named Second Team NABC All-District 11, and Most Valuable Player of the 2013 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.[2]

He ended his college career ranked ninth all-time at ECU with 66 blocked shots.[2]

Professional career

In his professional career, Kemp has played in 2013-14 for Alba Fehérvár in the EuroCup (where he averaged 12.3 points and 1.5 steals per game, and shot .821% from the free throw line), in 2014-15 for the Canton Charge of the G League, in 2015-16 for Kavala B.C. in the Greek Basket League, in 2018-19 for Montakit Fuenlabrada in the Liga ACB, and in 2020-21 for Kalev/Cramo in the VTB United League (where he averaged 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, and was 9th in the league with 0.9 blocks per game).[7][8]

He then brought his game to Israel. In 2021-22, Kemp played for Bnei Herzliya in the Israeli Premier League, where he averaged 16 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2 assists per game.[9][10] He now plays for Maccabi Rishon LeZion in the Israeli Premier League.[7][11]
