State Route 149 is a short route that connects the southside of downtown Birmingham, Alabama with the south suburbs of Mountain Brook and Homewood. Prior to the completion of Interstate 65, S.R. 149 served as the truck route of U.S. Highway 31 and U.S. Highway 280.
The northern termminus of S.R. 149 is at the interchange of University Boulevard and the Red Mountain (Elton B. Stephens) Expressway (U.S. 31/U.S. 280). There are no route indicators for S.R. 149 at this interchange. From this interchange, S.R. 149 follows University Boulevard through the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, heading in a generally southward direction. Between Exit 259 and Exit 255, S.R. 149 parallels Interstate 65 as both routes enter the city of Homewood. In Homewood, S.R. 149 is routed on Green Springs Highway until it intersects with Lakeshore Drive. At that point, the route turns east, passing Samford University, then junctioning again with U.S. 31 and then at its southern terminus with U.S. 280. Template:Metro Birmingham expressways
