Emanuela Alexa (born April 2, 1992), known professionally as Emaa (stylized in all caps), is a Romanian singer and songwriter. She became known in 2020 after the release of the song "Insula",[1] in collaboration with The Motans, which was a success and brought her collaboration with Global Records.[2][3] In the summer of 2021, Carla's Dreams launches its first project with Emaa, and the single "N-aud" quickly entered the music charts in Romania and the Republic of Moldova.[4][5]
Life and career
Emanuela Alexa was born on April 2, 1992, in Lugoj, Romania. Emaa started singing when she was little, being encouraged by her mother and grandparents.[6] At the age of three, she participated in Tip Top MiniTop, a televised children's talent contest.[7] She finished high school in his hometown and moved to Timișoara, where she studied at the Faculty of Sociology and Psychology at West University.[7]
After graduating from college, Emaa started playing with the alternative rock band BAB from Timişoara as a composer and vocal soloist. In 2015, she began a long-term collaboration with Silent Strike and released her first single, "Mâine", with Deliric.[8]
In 2017, Emaa was the female voice in the tracks on the album released by Silent Strike and entitled It`s Not Safe To Turn Off Your Computer.[8]
In 2018, she worked with Silent Strike, Deliric, Seek Music and Paul Parker on the soundtrack for the HBO-based Hackerville television series.[9]
In 2020, after signing with Global Records,[10] she had a successful collaboration with Sickotoy for the song "Gasolina", which was present on radios in Russia, Poland, Bulgaria, Portugal, Turkey and Romania.[11]
In October 2020, The Motans and Emaa released the song "Insula",[12] which immediately entered the Top 10 Shazam Romania and Media Forest chart and has over 9 million views on YouTube.[2][13] On December 1, 2020, the artist released her first studio album, Macii înfloresc iarna, which contains four songs performed by Emaa and three collaborations with Bastien, Bruja and Killa Fonic.[14]
The collaboration with Carla's Dreams for the song "N-aud" (2021) resulted in a real hit and one of the most listened to singles of the moment on Romanian radio stations.[15] The song ranked No. 1 in the Media Forest chart for nine consecutive weeks. Also, the song's video, directed by Roman Burlacă, recorded 3.6 million views on YouTube in less than a month.[16] Emaa won the award for Best Upcoming Artist at The Artist Awards 2021, which took place in September 2021 in Craiova.[17]
