Image:Noreen_1908.PNG

The source was claimed to be from 1908 and it looks like an accurate description to me. Isn't this quite enough for it not to be considered a copyright violation?

Peter Isotalo 11:34, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

I could not find out enough information or image description on the Image file. The image was deleted because it was not tagged for more than seven days of its upload. Please read image use policy carefully. If still there are any questions then please let me know. Thank you, Shyam (T/C) 12:35, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Old AFD review

Hello, I was wondering if you could close this old backlogged deletion review. Which has been completely lost in the archives and it doesn't look like anyone else is going to comment on it.Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jared Yates. Retiono Virginian 14:48, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

It has been closed and performed as of now. Cheers, Shyam (T/C) 15:02, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

SSM in Spain

Hi there. :-) I've seen you're replacing the images in Same-sex marriage in Spain by the ones in Commons. Just so you know, originally the images were placed (with permission) in the English Wikipedia and later added (by a friend of mine who has an account there) to Commons so they'd be available on the Wikipedias of other languages. You're free to keep replacing them here if you want, but there's really not much point. :-) Just thought I'd let you know. Cheers! Raystorm 17:07, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Raystorm, thanks for your notice. If the same images are available on commons with free license and undisputed then I think there is really a point to replace them with commons ones to reduce the load on servers by deleting duplicate images on local pages. Could you tag those images with {{subst:NC|Image:Imagefilename.ext}}? It would be great help. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 17:13, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Deleted image

Why did you delete Image:WiliamsTowerFromStreet.jpg. It has the appropriate tag. The tag was added more than 7 days ago. I restored the deleted image. Postoak 18:50, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Probably, I did not delete the image according to log. May be, you are talking about another one. Anyways, thanks for restoring, I might have missed out that tag. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 18:57, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

hi! i'm new to wikipedia especially in uploading images. i can't make it right and it is always deleted. i know what a copyright is but the instructions in wikipedia help is a little bit difficult for me to understand (given that i'm just contributing and don't have much time to read and understand word-for-word and everything). is there any other way i could post a university's logo without violating any wikipedia conditions? is there somebody who could explain to me in simple english how to post an image without being deleted? i really do hope you could help me. thanks in advance!

i'm involve with the WikiProject Universities and most of the university logos i've seen has the same status as the image you just deleted. does that give me the right to delete their logos too? please do not reply by posting any help links, just need a step by step instruction on how to put it back. thanks! hope you'll understand. Fddfred 04:39, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Hi Fddfred, thanks for asking me about this. I would like to help as much as I can. If you want to upload logos here from some websites. In most of the cases, logos are in fair-use. So, fair-use policy on Wikipedia is quite tidius. First provide the source from where you uploaded the image. Use copyright tag for the image. In the case of university logos use {{univ-logo}} for the copyright tag. Provide fair-use rationale for each article on the image page itself where do you want to use that image specifying why it is useful to use that logo on Wikipedia on that/those article(s). If you have any doubts regarding this, feel free to ask me, I will try to make them solve. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 15:17, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

It's very kind of you to archive those, but I think Voice of All has a bot which does it automatically after 24h or so. Regards — Dan | talk 04:39, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you Dan, I would not to archive again. I was not aware of that bot. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 04:40, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Bot?

If you are not a bot, please read the message at the top of User talk:Emax. It was at the bottom, too, but some people still posted below it (perhaps I should make it blink and scream...). Thank you, -- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  22:45, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I have read the message. But, I do not seek any possible alternate if the user is not replying to those mails as well. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 12:33, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

WP:NOT does not say that wikipedia should not be a news website. It clearly states in seciton 6: "Wikipedia should not offer first-hand news reports on breaking stories. Wikipedia is not a primary source. However, our sister project Wikinews does exactly that, and is intended to be a primary source. Wikipedia does have many encyclopedia articles on topics of historical significance that are currently in the news, and can be updated with recent verified information."

The Portal:Current events/Canada is not a primary source as per the definition of secondary source. It fits in all the other history / current events articles like many of the trial articles and world political articles. Mkdwtalk 13:34, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

WP:RFCU and clerks

Greetings! A recent change has been made in the clerking system at Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser. There are no longer any obstacles to editors who wish to help out in this areas, as the standby list has now been deprecated. You were listed as a volunteer on the standby list before it was deprecated. If you are still interested in helping out in this area, please:

  • Consider adding yourself to the list of active clerks at Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Clerks.
  • In helping, please make sure you follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Procedures as it is very important to the process there to follow these instructions for smooth operation.
  • Please remember "Trust between the clerks and the checkusers is essential. Clerks who persistently make problematic comments on requests or otherwise violate decorum may be asked by the checkusers to cease contributing here."
  • Add Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Clerks/Noticeboard to your watchlist to stay up to do date on the latest communications happening regarding this role.
  • "Be aware that this position is rather dull and carries no particular prestige; status-seeking will not be looked upon kindly."

I am not involved with the checkuser system. I am acting only to inform you of this change. Thank you. --Durin 14:33, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Commons images

Hello Shyam, I noticed you've replaced some WP images with Commons images. Is it policy to ensure that the Commons images are at least as good in quality (e.g. resolution) as the ones on WP? Appleseed (Talk) 18:06, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, the images available on commons must be of better or of the same quality as available on Wikipedia to replace them with commons. Is there any specific type of case do you want to ask? Regards, Shyam (T/C) 19:53, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
I'm glad to hear that. I was wondering because I've uploaded several images, and I would hate for them to be accidentally replaced with lower-quality ones on Commons. Appleseed (Talk) 21:40, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
If the images are under free-license then it would be better if you upload them on commons and tag the low-quality images on commons with {{duplicate}} and Wikipedia images with {{subst:NC}}. Thank you, Shyam (T/C) 03:34, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

WP:RFCU clerks

Good afternoon (GMT time); I noticed you recently alphabatised the list of clerks. I also done the same, but this was reverted by Daniel.Bryant. Just giving you the heads up, in case the same happens to you. I personally think alphabetical order is an improvement over the "chronological" order, which seems to indicate superiority rather than anything else. At the end of the day, Daniel was Head Clerk, before the position was retired but nevertheless, I don't see how our improvements can hinder the actual clerking.

Kind regards,
anthonycfc [talk] 15:17, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

Concerning your Admin Coaching assignments

Your name is still listed at Wikipedia:Admin coaching/Volunteers. The department is heavily backlogged with student's requests for coaches, and we need your help!

Note that the instructions may have changed since the last time you checked, and the department now follows a self-help process...

If you don't currently have a student, or if you believe you can handle another one, please select a student from the request list at Wikipedia:Admin coaching/Requests and contact them. See the instructions on Wikipedia:Admin coaching. Good luck.

If you are no longer available to coach, , please remove yourself from the volunteers list.

Thank you.

WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume II, Issue 2 - March 2007

Project News
  • Jimbo's visit to India and the WikiCamp in Chennai: Jimbo recently visited India in late February and early March on wiki work. This included a trip to a WikiCamp in Chennai. The one day conference attracted 300 participants from across India and beyond dealt with issues facing wikis ([1]). It was widely covered by the press, eg The Hindu( [2]), which cited the efforts of Bhadani (edit count), Sundar (leadership on Tamil Wikipedia) and Ganeshk (Creation of Ganeshbot to create articles on Indian towns from census figures). Ganeshk himself travelled from California to attend the conference.
  • Wikipedia Weekly 15: Wikipedia Weekly, a informal Wikipedians' program that purports to give "A weekly audio roundup of Wikipedia happenings with news, interviews and roundtable discussions" recently interviewed two prominent editors Rama's Arrow and Ragib(listen). The entire 34 minute interview was entirely about the world of Indian subcontinent wiki-happenings, and was the first episode which was not entirely dominated by discussion of wiki-politics and wiki-bureaucracy, with the host Witty lama praising the efficiency of the project and its proliferation of featured content. Rama's Arrow cited the team spirit, friendship and respect among project members in discussing its success and FA productivity, as well as discussing subcontinental wiki-conflict. Ragib talked also of his public campaign to raise awareness of the Bengali Wikipedia in his native Bangladesh, which has seen a 30-fold increase in article count over the past year.
What's New?
Congratulations to all contributors who helped to develop the above content to represent the best of Wikipedia!

  • On a sad note, Nobleeagle, who was responsible for the creation of the Punjab WikiProject, and was largely responsible for Indian cricket team, Bhagat Singh and Lage Raho Munna Bhai becoming GAs, as well as working heavily in Indian religious and cricket work, has left the project after having his identity revealed.
  • More generally, certain Indian users have recently been subject to real life harassment by banned users, etc. If this is affecting you in real life, please do not hesitate to contact Wikimedia board members for assistance, or ask a senior Wikipedian to solicit help on your behalf if required.

The translation department of the India WikiProject aims to utilize high-quality non-English material related to India for the goals of the project. This includes both translating articles from and to other-language Wikipedias as well as assisting contributors with non-English sources. The department aims to provide services in transliteration, formulating scripts for various languages, as well as translating articles from one language to another and validating sources in other languages to that of the encyclopedia article. If you are looking for a friendly translator here is your go-to point. Currently, we are still seeking representation for Kashmiri, Nepali, Oriya, Sindhi and Tulu, as well as reinforcements in all other languages.

On March 4, you deleted Special:Undelete/Image:Paul_bonaire.jpg, noting that it was now on the Commons. That's great, but it had a different name on the commons, so for a month, the Alexandra Paul article was sitting with a red link instead of an image. I fixed it, but wanted to note it for next time. --AnonEMouse (squeak) 14:27, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Image:Ambareesh.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Ambareesh.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Abu badali (talk) 17:39, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Admin coaching and adminship

Hey Shyam! I saw in your contribs that you're back. I've answered the questions you left on my admin coaching page as well as written one to you. I'm planning on running for adminship in a week. Do you think I'm jumping the gun? I'll change my plans if you believe that it's too soon. The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 22:49, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Ikiroid, sorry for the convinience because of my inactiveness. It would be better to wait for some days before going for an RfA. I want to have a look through your contributions as time permits. I am still busy with my academics. I made some contributions in last two days as I was missing Wikipedia. I would request to wait for some days. Shyam (T/C) 08:18, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
Sounds good, I'd rather have your assessment and approval first. I've been constantly checking your contributions for the past five weeks for activity and I thought that you had disappeared. I'll tell the nominator to wait, it shouldn't be a problem. I'm willing to wait another couple weeks/months until the time is right. Nice to see you back. Not that it's worthwhile to bring up at DRV, but what on earth would have made you think there was consensus to delete? Someone's Bothering Me

This dude, Enfestid, keeps deleting the System Requirements info im putting up for an upcomming PC game, Crysis (http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Crysis&action=history). He says that im not properly citing my sources (which may be something i need you to fill me in on) and that most of the information that i posted is already up there (which its not). Please, mediate this problem :D thx.KittenKiller

Kittenkiller, it could be better, if you properly cite the sources from where you posted the informations on Crysis. This kind of information may need of cite sourcing for verification. So I do not seek any harm in citing sources. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 04:56, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
OK, so can you tell me how to do it correctly? take the problem i am having in the Crysis article for this example. iv already searched wikipedia for the article that explains how to cite sources. doesnt help. thanks. KittenKiller
Currently, I am not so active on Wikipedia because I am busy in real life. I am really sorry for not helping out in this case. You may take help from other people. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 03:23, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks!

Hello Shyam, thanks for your birthday wishes the other day (August 15), much appreciated! umdrums 15:50, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Image:Sun, Earth size comparison labeled.jpg

Hi, you apperently deleted and restored Image:Sun, Earth size comparison labeled.jpg but I cannot find the pic. Can you enlighten me? — Xiutwel ♫☺♥♪ (talk) 18:39, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

The image file was being deleted because it was available on commons. Now, the image has been deleted from commons. So, it has been restored again. Cheers, Shyam (T/C) 06:17, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Why are you restoring an image that was properly deleted from Commons for being non-commercial (like all SOHO sun images)? 75.61.97.188 15:54, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
The picture is one of the featured ones. So, I think it would be better to first restore and then get a community consensus. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 11:28, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
