Possible Edits
The current page is a result of a merge between “Human development theory” and “Human development (economics).” Thus, the current article focuses primarily on measuring human development through our current metrics of the Human Poverty Index, Social Progress Index, etc. It would be helpful to also include a theory section of how human development drives economics and also link to other pages that would provide more information about specific approaches to human development. I would also re-write the “history” section and possibly re-structure the article to keep the human development measurements under one section. Cl115 (talk) 10:45, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

No sources, no history and I'm not sure that the article's neutrality currently conforms to wikipedia guidelines. I'll take a look at brushing it up, but recommend that it be categorized as a stub. BubblestheAnarchist (talk) 19:23, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
Bad Article
This article is not bad ------------
It is as if 'Human Development' sprang from the loins of God. There is no history behind the idea, who thinks it, who doesn't.
The only references in the article are from the UN and one issue of the academic journal Human Development
There is no mention of the enlightenment, no mention of liberalism - from which 'Human Development' is clearly an offshoot - no mention of the main thinkers behind this idea, little mention of the UN as an organization. The UN seems to be presented as a neutral actor simply 'Producing Reports' to let people know 'the facts' about human development.
According to the article's third sentence: "People are the real wealth of nations."
Are they? Who says?
Or how about this paragraph: This way of looking at development, often forgotten in the immediate concern with accumulating commodities and financial wealth, is not new. Philosophers, economists and political leaders have long emphasized human well-being as the purpose, the end, of development. As Aristotle said in ancient Greece, “Wealth is evidently not the good we are seeking, for it is merely useful for the sake of something else.”
"often forgotten" - is it, who forgets this, how often do they forget it exactly?? "is not new" - OK so how old is it then? "As Aristotle said..." - Oh right, I see, that old is it? "Philosopher, economists and political leaders have long emphasized human well-being as the purpose, the end, of development" - Who are these people? how long have they emphasized this for? and have they not debated what 'human well-being' actually is??
If no one objects i'm going to delete the majority of the article and say that it is an offshoot of liberalism and has been largely creatd as a 'thing' by the UN in recent times in an attempt to go beyond purely monetary measures of 'development'.

Regarding the comment above, I object to deletion. The article certainly needs work. I hope to spend a bit of time on it at some point in the next few weeks/months. I was working, independently, with a "human development index" in the mid-late 1980s, before UNDP published its first Human Development Report. I sourced data from World Bank publications plus the CIA World Factbook. There is also an independently published HDI produced in 2009 and 2011, with 232 countries (where UNDP currently covers 169). Check HumanSecurityIndex.orgin the meantime, click on the tab on the HDI. Data and a map are also posted. Also, the article should not be placed under "International Development" as this HDI construct is attempted within countries (e.g. at provincial or district levels) as well as between countries. Do not merge with international development, article needs improvement, will work on it
The article is about the concept created by Mahbub ul Haq and while is related to International Development, it should NOT be merged.Other dictionaries are better (talk) 21:48, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
Neutrality
The article states opinion, not fact: "People are the real wealth of nations." Needs to be fixed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tylerscot (talk • contribs) 17:20, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
- The statement you refer to was plagiarized directly from the un's human development report website, and so I will delete it. This could potentially mean that more of the article is taken directly from other sources. Liam987 19:16, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
First sentence
I have changed the first sentence from "Human development in the scope of humanity, specifically international development, is an international and economic development paradigm", to "Human development is a concept within the scope of the study of the human condition, specifically international development, relating to international and economic development". If anyone objects to this or has an idea of how to improve it, please let me know. Liam987 19:28, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Woman Empowerment - Social development
Women's empowerment (or female empowerment) may be defined in several ways, including accepting women's viewpoints or making an effort to seek them, raising the status of women through education, awareness, literacy, and training.[1][2][3] Women's empowerment equips and allows women to make life-determining decisions through the different problems in society.[3] They may have the opportunity to redefine gender roles or other such roles, which in turn may allow them more freedom to pursue desired goals. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 27.106.99.104 (talk) 16:23, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
