Annelise "Anna" Firth (born 1965 or 1966)[1] is a British politician, serving as the Conservative MP for Southend West after winning the 2022 Southend West by-election caused by the killing of David Amess.[2]
Early life
Firth originally comes from Leigh-on-Sea.[3] She obtained a law degree from Durham University, and worked for a time as a barrister.[3]
Political career
Firth served as a district councillor on Sevenoaks District Council for the area covering Brasted, Chevening, Sundridge and Ide Hill from May 2011 to her resignation on 7 January 2022. [4][5]
Firth stood in the parliamentary constituency of Erith and Thamesmead in 2015 and Canterbury in the 2019 general election, losing to Labour's Teresa Pearce and Rosie Duffield respectively.
She later stood as the Conservative Party candidate in the 2022 by-election held following the killing of David Amess in his constituency of Southend West. Following the precedent set in 2016 after the murder of Jo Cox and the ensuing by-election in Batley and Spen, no major parties contested the seat.[6] She won the election with 12,792 votes and a majority of 12,220, with a turnout of 24.0% and 1,084 rejected ballots.[7]
Firth lived in Kent before her selection for the by-election, but stated her intention to move into the constituency with her family.[8][2]
