The Whale is an upcoming American psychological drama film[2] directed by Darren Aronofsky and written by Samuel D. Hunter, based on his play of the same name.[3] The film stars Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, and Hong Chau.

Premise

A 600-pound middle-aged man named Charlie tries to reconnect with his 17-year-old daughter. The two grew apart after Charlie abandoned his family for his gay lover, who later died. Charlie then went on to binge eat out of pain and guilt.[4]

Cast

Production

On January 11, 2021, it was announced that A24 has global rights of The Whale, a film that will be directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Brendan Fraser.[6][4][7] In February 2021, Hong Chau, Sadie Sink and Samantha Morton joined the cast.[8] On March 4, 2021 Ty Simpkins joined the cast.[9] Sathya Sridharan also joined the cast.[5]

Principal photography began on March 8 and concluded on April 7, 2021 in Newburgh, New York. The film entered post-production in the same month.[10][11]

In an interview with Newsweek in June, Fraser revealed that the film was "already in the can" and that his role included "a lot of make-up and prosthetics."[12]
