Biography
Daniel John-Paul Poggi Ahern,[1] is a Sydney-based multi-instrumentalist, who signed to Australian record label Future Classic and records solo material under the moniker, Bus Vipers.[2][3] Bus Vipers was initiated in 2013 when he independently released his debut single, "Lonely Ghost", which was picked up by Triple J's Unearthed.[4]
Ahern holds Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws degrees from the University of New South Wales and was the programme director of FBi Radio in Sydney.[5]
Bus Vipers' debut six-track extended play, Federal Highway, was released on 8 September 2017,[6] which received widespread play on Australian community radio and on national youth radio, Triple J.[7][8][9] Danielle Kfare of BroadwayWorld oberved, "[it is] filled with melodic power-pop, kaleidoscopic textures, electronic flourishes, garage rock and funk pulses."[10]
The EP was preceded by two video-clips "CSIRO Weeds" (July 2017) and "Fluid" (August); both are directed by Prue Stent and Honey Long.[11][12][13] "CSIRO Weeds" was described by Purple Sneakers' Lloyd Crackett, "it could slide right into the mountains of psych-tinged pop dominating the airwaves at the moment, with the falsetto tone over a plethora of effects."[2] Jonny Nail of Rolling Stone Australia felt the "Fluid" video clip is "a unique visual embracement of his alopecia."[11] The song, "embraces both the clinically precise nature of the clip and it’s strange subject focus, saddling the fidelity border between bedroom lo fi and studio shine as Ahern’s soothing vocals dissect the psych-pop clutter."[11] The EP was toured around Australia in October and November 2017 with The Belligerents.[14]
