- The Inevitable Mr. Gaines (Journal Article)[1]
- This journal article goes into DEPTH about what actually went down between the University of Missouri and Lloyd Gaines (and also Lucile Bluford). Multiple people opposed to the integration of MU (Frederick Middlebush, Allen McReynolds) have University buildings commemorated in their names today. I will need to go back and reread this article again, but there is so much information describing the lengths that MU went to in order to remain segregated throughout the 20th century. Many claim that if Lloyd Gaines had shown up for the final court hearing, this case would have been "the original Brown v. Board of Education."
- Exploring Columbia's civil rights history (Podcast)[2]
- Again, I will need to go back and relisten to this. This conversation explores alternative theories of what possibly happened to Gaines. Dr. Horner suggests that that Gaines may have migrated to Mexico and gives an account of an eye witness of "a dark man working in the mines," and how someone had made plans to meet up with Gaines in Mexico, but Gaines didn't show up.
