FYI (PDF uploads)

List of PDFs, courtesy of MediaWiki's search engine. It peters out at about ~2500 to just images with sources containing ".pdf", but there's enough there to keep us busy for a long time. It's a pity the API search is generally borked, because results can be restricted to titles only. MER-C 13:08, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Hut,

Thanks for deleting User:Monsterclean. I wasn't sure if I nominated it for deletion correctly. I am still learning all the rules and processes of Wikipedia. Also, thanks for all your contributions and all your efforts reverting vandalism. Have a great day. Peace and Hugs Eclectic hippie talk to me 17:21, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks again

Hey Hut 8.5,

Thanks for the Wiki Welcome.... I got to admit, I felt kind of bad that I had never received a "Welcome". I do appreciate your gesture!!! In the future I will stick with recent changes and not reccommending articles for deletion. It was a little complicated and a little bit of a pain too. The Barnstar of Good Humor

I want to thank you for taking part in editing this page in particular and even though I may not know you, embrace the same talk pages, or even edit with you in the near future, I'd like to award you this Barnstar for making Wikipedia a fun environment in which to contribute. Alberti Cipher

I am the person who found, collected, edited, translated and commented all the existing manuscripts of Alberti’s De Cifris. I am obviously considered the undisputed authority on the subject of Alberti’s cipher within the philological and cryptological communities. The Wikipedia page “Alberti Cipher” is crammed with historical and technical blunders, mostly derived from a superficial reading of Simon Singh’s The Code Book. Simon Singh, in turn, is admittedly an ignorant of the art of cryptology, and based his chapters on a bad interpretation of old writings by authors also ignorant of the original text and of the Italian and Latin languages. The page “Alberti Cipher” is a bad product that can only throw discredit upon Wikipedia. Publishing minor corrections is impossible, owing to the false assumption on which the cryptanalytic hypothesis is based. The alternative is canceling the entire page or allowing appropriate comments after each single sentence. Augusto (Gus) Buonafalce

lies vs vandalism

Maybe you should consider blocking The Cat and the Owl instead? In my view lying in articles is worse than "vandalizing" them, the latter is quite easily identified while the former is not.

Where ?

You've sayed there are not vandalisms. So, where i've to sign personal attacks and lies of user:Bill Thayer ? --87.6.194.103 (talk) 16:04, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Caledonia fair and wild

What have you been doing with Caledonia? It's not a dab page, it's a brief description of the ancient and modern romantic term for Scotland. Please also note that Caledonia (Roman) is a redirect to Caledonia, which is as it should be as it's a Latin term, not a "Roman" term. Caledonia (disambiguation) includes a lot of things and places named after Caledonia, but the original term is clear enough and a move would be inappropriate. . .. dave souza, talk 17:01, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your response, it seems to have been someone else who moved the page and caused the confusion. I think it likely that all of the non-Scottish links were to places named after Scotland, that sort of thing is very common. Some Californians I met on a train once told me of their surprise at finding Linlithgow in Scotland, as a place near their home had the name and they thought it was (American) indian .. dave souza, talk 19:05, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

No problem. I've deleted his attack page too. Hut 8.5 19:31, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Do you think his talk page could be deleted as well? I'm not a big fan of what it says on there... —BradV 20:35, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
I've removed everything except the block notice. It's in Category:Temporary Wikipedian userpages so it will get deleted after a month or so anyway unless he requests unblock or starts evading his block. Hut 8.5 20:38, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. He said he was going to create a thousand new accounts to vandalize my userpage, so I'll keep my eyes open. —BradV 20:41, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Probably bluffing, but I can sem-protect your userpage to stop new accounts editing it if you like. (I can't do that for your talk page.) Hut 8.5 20:46, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks but I don't have a userpage. And judging by how quickly it all got reverted last time I'll be okay. —BradV 21:08, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Significance

Does being a child of famous people assert significance? I thought WP:BIO stated otherwise. Should that have been a PROD and not a speedy as significance and notability are not the same? Beach drifter (talk) 19:45, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

thanks for your input on Genetics of the Ancient World...which no longer belongs to me, but I started it so have a sense of responsibility to insure it meets all quality standards. Please detail which internal links are missing to the discussion page and I will add every single one. thanks Hkp-avniel (talk) 14:25, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Ok, so you can remove the message box about the request for internal links? This was your initial objection wasn't it?
Can you be more specific about manual of style? You have not posted anything on the discussion page. The first section of the article explains what Genetics of the Ancient World refers to and is followed by what is properly understood as an annotated bibliography see: http://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/research/skill28.htm for an explanation of an annotated bibliography. Many wikipedia articles list many journal articles in their bibliography section such as ancient DNA, but in Genetics of the Ancient World of the ancient world in the interest of easy and quick access to the data in the articles they are explained and summarized for easy reference.
If you can give me a point by point explanation with specific references to the wikipedia manual of style I will make the changes. thanks Hkp-avniel (talk) 14:40, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Phoenicia: I re-wrote that for the Genetics page

Hello, I re-wrote the explanation on Phoenicia from the orignal Phoenican page for the Genectics of the Ancient World page and then re-added it to Phoenicia...now you deleted my original writing? Can you give me a specific reference in the Manual of Style that says we shouldn't reuse good text? This is the same as reusing good code in HTML or Open Source. Hkp-avniel (talk) 17:25, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

The style of the article Genetics of the Ancient World was intentional

You made major edits to the article Genetics of the Ancient World removing the most important content: the titles indicating which articles they belong to. I am renaming the section to "Annotated Bibliography" to avoid any further confusion following your suggestion to change the style of the article. Hkp-avniel (talk) 17:29, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

greetings...ok I think the article is more wikiconforming now, right? I'm wondering, there's no rule about creating wikipedia articles about a specific genetics articles that had significant impact in genetics and popular culture is there? For instance, the landmark article about the Cohen Modal Haplotype by Behar, et al, would be an wikiarticle about the Cohen study and its impact traced through various sources. Can I do that? thanks Hkp-avniel (talk) 07:45, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

ok about the header paragraph...I'll edit it (or someone else) to explain genetics of the ancient world and put the rest under a "history" section or something like that. Hkp-avniel (talk) 11:12, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

RE: Speedy delete request for CFL

The request hadn't been closed yet as the move had yet to be completed. The speedy deletion was followed through earlier in the afternoon, with the redirect recreated while I was (ironically) out to lunch. With consensus for the move to take place and, moreover, growing evidence that Canadian Football League is no longer the primary topic, CFL should be a dab page. But, as my request has now been approved once, and then denied twice, I guess there's no point in me arguing the point anymore. JPG-GR (talk) 19:04, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

PDF viewer

Thank you for pointing out Image:California_State_Constitution_of_1879.pdf. I am currently converting it to a djvu file so that it can be used on Wikisource. To see how it will look, here is one I set up today: s:Index:Zwei-Plus-Vier-Vertrag.djvu, which is used on s:Treaty on the Final Settlement with Respect to Germany.

Ideally, I would like to see bugzilla:11215 implemented, so that everyone can see PDFs without having to download it. I expect this will be of use to Wikipedia and Commons, as users will be able to work out which PDFs need to be deleted sooner. John Vandenberg (chat) 01:58, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Map pdf

I created File:Map.pdf. First of all it is misnamed, but also the file never really worked out. I was trying to generate a census map. I have no idea how to delete the file, so it sits there taking up space. Kindly remove it if you know how. Or direct me to Wiki help on how to remove the file. Thanks.--Pat (talk) 16:05, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

If you have a moment, I would like your opinion on this matter. Reading through the Adorno article, I came across this dab page, the existence of which is nonsensical to me. There are currently no articles for either the "Romanian book" nor for the piece of musci---both of which entries connect to their respective articles---so, why do we need a dab page? Minima Moralia should go directly to the Adorno book, since this is the most widely-known usage. Given that there are no other relevant entries, the dab page should be removed altogether, methinks. What do you think? ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 20:42, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

I will do just as you recommend. Minima Moralia will be the Adorno book (which will require sorting out some redirects) and I will move the current page to Minima Moralia (disambiguation). I will get on that right now. ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 20:59, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 04:39, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Defeasance definition

Hi. I undid your recent changes to the definition of "defeasance" on the assumption it was vandalism-- and then saw that you are not a vandal. So, I apologize for the false accusation. However, I noted that the material you deleted that you said was copyrighted did not appear at either of the links referenced, or if it did I didn't see it. Please note that I did not add this material in the first place, but it provides a much better definition of the current usage of the term and I'm just not sure that it appears at those links. I can rewrite this section if it is indeed copyrighted material.

Again, sorry to have labeled your changes as vandalism. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.251.225.73 (talk) 23:29, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I did some further searching. It appears the material on http://www.defeasancerealestate.com/defeasance%20real%20estate.html) was taken from Wikipedia, and not the other way around. The part of the definition including that material predates the original registration of the defeasancerealestate.com domain on 7/12/2007: http://who.godaddy.com/WhoIs.aspx?domain=defeasancerealestate.com&prog_id=godaddy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.251.225.73 (talk) 23:50, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Shared accounts

I was going to post this at ANI, but since the thread is kind of old, I thought it might be better just to post it to your talkpage.

What's wrong with shared accounts? As long as all of its users understand that they only have one collective voice in what happens at articles and discussions, then I don't see what could possibly be wrong with it. As a group of tightly knit individuals who share common interests and edit similar articles, if they had individual accounts, they would have been banned several times over for meatpuppetry. Question

How come you undid the revisions to my comments on the Michelle Rodriguez talk archive page? Those are my comments. I want them gone. The other user won't agree to removal of our past petty interactions, so I want my parts at least gone. I am removing them and they insist on restoring them. That's not their right to do so. Please allow me to remove my own words. Due to the fact that they are not within any article itself, it does not belong to Wiki and therefore is it is not against Wiki rules. Sure, it's claimed to be "highly disruptive" but according to whom? One other user who wants to dictate? Not right. Please just allow my past comments on the talk page to stay gone.
