Death on the Nile is a 2022 mystery film directed by Kenneth Branagh from a screenplay by Michael Green, based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie. It was produced by Branagh, Ridley Scott, Judy Hofflund, and Kevin J. Walsh. The film is a sequel to Murder on the Orient Express (2017), with Tom Bateman and Branagh returning from the first film as Bouc and Hercule Poirot, respectively. The film also stars Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders, and Letitia Wright. The film is the third screen adaptation of Christie's novel, following the 1978 film and an episode of the television series Agatha Christie's Poirot broadcast in 2004. Principal photography began in September 2019, with filming taking place at Longcross Studios in England and on location in Morocco, completing that December.[5]
Death on the Nile was first released in several international markets on February 9, 2022, and in the United Kingdom and United States on February 11, following several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who noted it as inferior to the previous adaptations but appreciated its old-fashioned style. The film has grossed $41 million against a production budget of $90 million.
Plot
This article's plot summary may be too long or excessively detailed. (February 2022) |
In World War I, a young Hercule Poirot devises a strategy to help his squadron of Belgian troops reclaim land against the Central Powers. Though the tactic is successful, he fails to stop his captain's death from a booby trap which also mutilates Poirot's face. He is tended to by his lover, nurse Katherine, who encourages him to grow a mustache to hide his scars. In 1937, Poirot enters a club where jazz singer Salome Otterbourne is performing. He witnesses Jacqueline "Jackie" de Bellefort introduce her fiancé Simon Doyle to her childhood friend, heiress Linnet Ridgeway, hoping that Linnet will offer him employment. Linnet hires Simon on the spot, and sparks fly between the two to Jackie's discomfort.
Six weeks later, Poirot is vacationing in Egypt when he encounters his friend Bouc and Bouc's mother Euphemia, a renowned painter. Bouc also introduces Poirot to his friends Linnet and Simon, who have married and are celebrating their honeymoon. Others have joined the couple on the trip: Linnet's longtime maid Louise Bourget; Salome; Salome's niece and manager and Linnet's old classmate Rosalie; Linnet's communist-leaning godmother Marie Van Schuyler; Van Schuyler's nurse Mrs. Bowers; Linnet's cousin Andrew Katchadourian, who is in charge of Linnet's will; and doctor Linus Windlesham, who had been engaged to Linnet before she left him for Simon. Linnet and Simon request protection from Poirot as Jackie has followed them to Egypt. She appears to be an obsessive stalker wanting to win Simon back after he broke their engagement and then married Linnet.
Hoping to escape from Jackie but not disrupt their honeymoon, the group boards the cruise ship S.S. Karnak, though Linnet admits to Poirot that she does not trust any of the guests. During a stopover at Abu Simbel, Bouc confesses to Poirot that he is dating Rosalie. Poirot gives him his blessing, while Bouc encourages him to find love himself; Poirot starts showing interest towards the charismatic Salome. After a land excursion, the guests return to the Karnak to discover Jackie has boarded. Linnet and Simon decide to leave the following morning and share a final farewell with Poirot. An intoxicated Poirot encounters Jackie, who is still adamant in wanting to win back Simon; Poirot confides that he was supposed to be with Katherine after the war ended, but she died from a mortar explosion and Poirot decided to close himself to romantic feelings. After Linnet leaves the party and goes to bed, Simon confronts and insults Jackie, prompting her to instinctively shoot at his leg, then feel remorse and attempt to shoot herself with the gun. She is stopped by Rosalie, who knocks the gun to the floor and kicks it away. Bouc and Rosalie bring Jackie to be tended by Mrs. Bowers, while Windlesham tends to Simon's wound. The following morning, Louise discovers that Linnet has been shot in the head, and that her valuable jewel necklace has been stolen.
Poirot, assisted by Simon and Bouc, begins interrogating the guests and accuses each of them of the murder. Jackie is ruled out as the killer because she was monitored by Bowers throughout the night. Louise was supposed to leave Linnet's employment after getting married, but Linnet forcefully ended her engagement in order to keep her as a servant. Windlesham denies any jealousy towards Simon and ill will towards Linnet for leaving him. Bowers was also from a wealthy family, but she and her workers were evicted from their lands due to the actions of Linnet's parents during the Great Depression; Poirot deduces that she is not Van Schuyler's maid but her lover. Andrew, who possesses a gun, had almost let Linnet sign a reworked contract that would have embezzled her, had it not been for Rosalie's intervention. Salome also carries a gun, and was insulted by Linnet years ago. Euphemia spots Linnet's necklace among her belongings and reports it to Poirot, who begins suspecting her as well. Jackie's gun, the murder weapon, is eventually found wrapped with Van Schuyler's missing scarf and is missing two bullets.
Poirot gathers Bouc, Euphemia, Salome, and Rosalie, and reveals that he was hired by Euphemia to spy on Rosalie to assess her suitability as a partner for Bouc, explaining his presence in Egypt and at the club six weeks prior. Despite Poirot's approval, Euphemia withholds her blessing. Louise is found dead with money in her pocket and her throat slit, evidently by Windlesham's scalpel. Poirot sees the shape of a possible witness around blood splatter from Louise's murder. Poirot and Simon interrogate Bouc, who is bewildered that his friend suspects him. Poirot deduces that Bouc had found Linnet dead without telling anyone; he stole her jewel necklace to give himself and Rosalie financial freedom, but panicked when its absence was detected by Poirot and placed it in his mother's belongings knowing her own riches would absolve her of the theft. He then witnessed Louise collecting money from the killer before she was also murdered and threw his coat in the river because it was coated in her blood. Before he can reveal the killer's identity, Bouc is shot through the throat from afar; Poirot fails to catch the killer in a chase, but discovers Andrew's abandoned gun.
Motivated by his friend's death, Poirot and the crew of the Karnak lock the surviving guests in the boat's bar, having solved the murder. Poirot reveals that Simon is Linnet's killer, with Jackie as the mastermind. They are still lovers, and arranged Simon's romance with Linnet so Simon would inherit her wealth once she was killed. Having pretended to shoot Simon with a blank, Jackie managed to distract Bouc and Rosalie, while Simon used paint stolen from Euphemia to fake his injury. He used the short amount of time provided by the distraction to kill Linnet, witnessed by Louise, and then shot himself in the leg while using Van Schuyler's scarf as a silencer before Windlesham arrived. Simon later disposed of the murder weapon; Jackie killed Louise and then Bouc. Engaged in a standoff with Poirot and Salome, Simon attempts to escape with Jackie, but Jackie, knowing there is no escape for them, shoots Simon through the back as they kiss and embrace, killing the two lovers.
The passengers disembark. Salome admits that she had been interested in Poirot before he showed his cold personality in his work. Six months later, a clean-shaven Poirot visits Salome's jazz club to watch her perform, alone in the dark.

Production
Development
In 2015, Christie's great-grandson James Prichard, chairman of Agatha Christie Limited, expressed enthusiasm for sequels, citing the positive collaboration with Branagh and the production team.[7] In May 2017, Branagh expressed interest in further installments if the first film was successful.[8] On November 20, 2017, it was announced that 20th Century Fox was developing Death on the Nile as a sequel to their version of Murder on the Orient Express with Michael Green returning to pen the script and Kenneth Branagh set to return on camera as Poirot, and behind the camera as director.[9]
In September 2018, Gal Gadot joined the cast.[10] In addition, Paco Delgado was hired to design the costumes.[11] In October 2018, Armie Hammer joined the cast, and Tom Bateman was confirmed to reprise his role as Bouc for the film.[12][13] In January 2019, Jodie Comer had joined the cast.[14] In April 2019, Letitia Wright joined the cast.[15] Annette Bening was in talks to join in June.[16] Russell Brand joined the cast in August 2019.[17] Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo and Jennifer Saunders were added in September, with Comer not being involved.[11][18][19]
Filming
Principal photography began on September 30, 2019, at Longcross Studios in Surrey, England.[20][21] The film was supposed to be filmed in Morocco instead of Egypt, but filming took place only in England.[22]
A boat was recreated, as well as the Temple of Abu Simbel.[23] The Tiffany Yellow Diamond was used for the film.[24] Shooting lasted until December 18, 2019.[25]
Post-production
Úna Ní Dhonghaíle served as the editor for Death on the Nile.[26] Double Negative (DNEG) provided the visual effects for the film, with Academy Award-winning special effects artist George Murphy as the overall visual effects supervisor.[27] Additional VFX were provided by Lola VFX and Raynault VFX.[28][29]
In January 2019, Patrick Doyle, a frequent collaborator on Branagh's films (including the film's predecessor), was announced as the composer for the film.[30]
Release
The film had its world premiere in France and South Korea on February 9, 2022.[31][32] After having been rescheduled several times owing to COVID-19 pandemic,[33] Death on the Nile was theatrically released on February 11, 2022, by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures through the 20th Century Studios label.[34] The film was originally set to be released on December 20, 2019, before being rescheduled to October 9, 2020 due to production issues.[35] It was then pushed back two weeks to October 23, and again to December 18, in response to the domestic box office underperformance of Tenet during the COVID-19 pandemic. In November 2020, the studio removed the film, along with Free Guy, from its upcoming release schedule until further notice. The next month, the film was rescheduled to September 17, 2021. In March 2021, it was then moved to the current February 2022 date.[34] The film was banned in Lebanon and Kuwait due to Gadot's IDF background.[36] The film was allowed to be released in Saudi Arabia.[37] The film will be released in China on 19 February 2022, making it the first Hollywood blockbuster to be released in the Chinese market after The Matrix Resurrections, which was released on 14 January 2022.[38][39]
Disney spent $18 million on television commercials promoting the film by the time it premiered in theaters. Social media analytic RelishMix said the film had a social media reach of 217.9 million interactions, "at social norms for a campaign that began 18 months ago in August 2020 and wrestled with Covid re-dates and other headline news, such as Armie Hammer." Deadline Hollywood said Disney's marketing campaign was "anchored on a socially media quiet Gadot, who was more active during Red Notice."[40]
Reception
Box office
As of February 18, 2022[update], Death on the Nile has grossed $20.5 million in the United States and Canada, and $20.9 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $41.4 million.[3]
In the United States and Canada, Death on the Nile was released alongside Marry Me and Blacklight, and was projected to gross $11–17 million from 3,280 theaters in its opening weekend.[41] The film grossed $12.9 million in its opening weekend, finishing first at the box office.[42] Overall audiences during its opening were 51% male, 77% above the age of 25, 47% above 35, and 28% above 45. The ethnic breakdown of the audience showed that 57% were Caucasian, 15% Hispanic and Latino Americans, 13% African American, and 15% Asian or other.[40]
Outside the U.S. and Canada, the film grossed $20.7 million in its opening weekend from 47 international markets. As of February 13, 2022, the film's largest markets are Russia ($2.5 million), the U.K. ($2.4 million), Italy ($2.1 million), France ($2.1 million), and Germany ($1.4 million).[43]
Critical response
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 63% of 216 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.9/10. The website's consensus reads: "Old-fashioned to a fault, the solidly entertaining Death on the Nile is enlivened by its all-star cast and director-star Kenneth Branagh's obvious affection for the material."[44] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 52 out of 100, based on 50 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews.[45] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B" on an A+ to F scale, the same as its predecessor, while those at PostTrak gave it a 77% positive score, with 57% saying they would definitely recommend it.[40]
David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter wrote: "For some of us who look back with affection on John Guillermin's lush 1978 screen version, there's a nagging feeling throughout that Branagh, while hitting the marks of storytelling and design, has drained some of the fun out of it."[46] Owen Gleiberman of Variety called the film "a moderately diverting dessert that carries you right along. It never transcends the feeling that you're seeing a relic injected with life serum, but that, in a way, is part of its minor-league charm."[47] Edward Porter of The Times gave the film 3 out of 5 stars, saying that its "gaudy style — combined with the melodrama of the script’s modified take on Christie's plot — remains diverting even if some of the supposedly Egyptian backdrops look phoney."[48] Wendy Ide of The Observer gave the film 2 out of 5 stars, writing: "The camera whirls giddily, dizzy from the sparkle and spectacle, but not quite able to conceal the fact that this is an empty bauble of a movie."[49]
Future
In a December 2017 interview with the Associated Press, Branagh discussed developing the adaptation of Death on the Nile with the possibility of more films to follow, potentially creating a new "cinematic universe" of Christie films:[50]
"I think there are possibilities, aren't there? With 66 books and short stories and plays, she — and she often brings people together in her own books actually, so innately — she enjoyed that," he says. "You feel as though there is a world — just like with Dickens, there's a complete world that she's created — certain kinds of characters who live in her world — that I think has real possibilities."[50]
