Kevin Baugh (born 30 July 1962) is an American micronationalist who is the founder and President of the Republic of Molossia, a self-proclaimed micronation that is not formally recognised by any world government. His Presidential term started on the September 3, 1999, which is the official date of foundation of Molossia. However, his involvement in micronationalism goes way back to the end of the 1970s. He has made several endeavours in the "micronational community", including the biennual MicroCon – the largest gathering of micronationalists.
Republic of Molossia
The origins of Molossia come from a micronation childhood project, called the Grand Republic of Vuldstein, which was founded by Baugh and his friend James Spielman on 26 May 1977.[2] After several changes to the micronation, Baugh moved to Nevada in 1998, declaring it as Molossia's territory, and he officially declared it as the Republic of Molossia in 1999, proclaiming himself as president.[2] Molossia has since gained a considerable amount of media attention, and now hosts multiple tours which see fifty visitors per year.[3][4] Baugh has stated; "We all want to think we have our own country, but you know the U.S. is a lot bigger".[5]
Other micronational ventures
Baugh also created the "Intermicronational Olympic Games" in 2000, which he stated; "I believe that all micronations should exist as much as possible in the real world [...] doing real things in real places with real people." The digital micronation TorHavn organized a follow-up in April 2002, though only two micronations joined, Molossia and Farallonus, with the latter nation sweeping gold. Several micronationalists have since unsuccessfully attempted to revive the games.[6]
In 2014, he announced MicroCon, a biannual event held in odd years intended as a venue for delegates of micronations around the world "to share their ideas, dreams and worlds with each other." MicroCon 2015 received 36 attendees.[7][8] He also co-hosted MicroCon 2017 and 2019, which were each hosted by different micronational governments.[9] The latter received 113 attendees, making it the largest formal gathering of micronationalists ever held.[10]
Personal life
Baugh keeps private about his personal life. He has been married to his wife Adrianne since October 18, 2009, whom he has dubbed the first lady of Molossia. They have three children, Alexis, Carson and Mark.
He works in the human-resources department of the Nevada National Guard. He formerly served as a sergeant first class in the US Army.[11]
