Some very useful topics about Wiki Civility (Here or once there, best viewed with PopUps On! :), for new users like me to keep in mind, as I have been learning in the last few weeks; as well as things here that long-term users may find worth brushing up on occasionally! In particular, this is about... "The Basics" - We must learn how to be civil on the wiki bureaucracy, and to Compromise. Accepting other users is crucial and we all have a duty and yes, you have the right to enjoy yourself within the bounds of the wiki honor system, so keep saying thanks, thank you and there should be no need for an apology. If things get hot, better to call a truce, then forgive and forget, even when there are supposed to be no vested contributors while at times it may appear there are, then keep staying cool when the editing gets hot, even if there has been overzealous deletion or content removal etc. etc. etc., happening then try adopting a quieter role and always assume good faith to avoid any divisiveness.

Howdy WikHead no I was actually trying to put tocrights straight after each heading so that from anywhere in the doc you have access to all the other hyperlinked HEADINGS on the page.

Could do it manually like I have concocted here for the hyperlinked level 2 headings on this page but it would be nice to see this in a nice tocright style box - if you see what I mean. KHS-Boab (talk) 21:05, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe I've ever seen a page styled the way you want it... but that's not to say that it can't be done. WP:MAGIC would probably be the resource for such a thing. Thanks for the link to Help:Magic words Had hoped that __TOC__ might work - and it did!, but because I was editing just this section it was only showing that single heading (26th parallel south) when I clicked "Preview" - So when I clicked "Save" - Here it is!

After some research I think I have found the easiest solution, which appears to be acceptable on wik - the following...

By using [[#toc|Contents]]

So by placing this at the end of each section the user can easily navigate within the page without endless scrolling.

I would like to ask any wiki users who read this, whether the users on wiki are adaptable enough to widen their views and be accepting of allowing use of Wikipedia Intra Document Navigation (WIDN - Pronounced Widen)[1], within a wiki page.

I have only seriously been using wiki for about a month, but come from a html coding background and have studied the W3C specifications, since 1996. In web pages I have often used links within the title of a section that propel the user instantly to the place, as I will do to this page, for interests sake, then I will go and search the wiki bureaucracy for the protocol for wiki wp:links in titles. - WIP?

I have just checked this and the MOS:HEAD stated as follows.

Headings should not normally contain links, especially where only part of a heading is linked.

This implies that it is ok to link the entire heading, though this is not "normal". I would like to see this change, for functionality sake, to normalise section heading links across Wikipedia.

Another interesting point picked up from the same article (Wikipedia:Manual of Style - "Section headings" section or MOS:HEAD), is the fact that "invisible" html notes, are allowed in titles, and encouraged for noting section headings that are linked from other article, to avoid breaking the link if changed, as follows.

Before changing a section heading, consider whether you might be breaking existing links to that section. If there are many links to the old section title, create an anchor with that title to ensure that the links still work. Similarly, when linking to a section of an article, leave a [sic - an] invisible comment at that section, specifying the names of the linking articles so that if the title is altered, others can fix the links. For example:

Any thoughts as testing on this page re title headings as WIDN links - If titles are generally not "acceptable" in wiki, but do work (meaning there are none?/very few links in titles), then this could amost be implemented from within the meta wiki code, I'd Imagine! IE. Each Title is a referenced link (From outside or within the page), so titles may be automagically linked somehow (from within the meta wiki MediaWiki code?), with no user intervention, such as shown here in this article.

[Having only had a quick look investigation of Meta Wiki MediaWiki during research for this topic, and only since Jan.16 2012 - I like what I see there and will be back to gain a better understanding - Even though I'd never seen meta wiki MediaWiki code parts looked vaguely "familiar" through other coding in the past]

IE by making all titles links to themselves. In html I accomplish this by use of the hash tag (#) within the name attribute of the Anchor (A) element. I was pleased to find the "#" anchor as part of wiki BTW.

eg. - In a html document.

<h2><a name=href="#Test Anchor" name="Test Anchor">Test Anchor</a></h2>

[Would only work by replacing the space in "Test Anchor" with an underscore, in wiki, but the space works in html as it is within the literals (").[2]

It seems that they have blocked the use of HTML links in Section Headings via meta wiki MediaWiki and if that is the case it is understandable, and would be no doubt due to good reasons.

It is interesting to find that on a wiki page it is even easier! as I have just tested here on the 1st title of this page and it works perfectly - Now I will change all titles on this page to test. Try navigating using a combination of the "Contents" link and the "Section Titles," to test the idea to WIDN Wiki!

On wiki adding title anchors is as easy as

eg. ==[[#Wiki Title|Wiki Title]]==

This is even easier on the same page, than linking to section links within other wiki pages, as on the page that a #link resides on, there is no need to add "underscores" to replace "spaces" in the titles, as would be the case when linking to this from another page.

IE. To work from another page the link above would need to be

eg. [[User talk:KHS-Boab#Wiki_Title|Wiki Title]]

so natively, with the addition of [[# & | ]] the title can be hyperlinked. As long as each title is unique in name it will work - AFAICT

The above was written prior to modifying titles on this page with links.

Not only does adding an internal hyperlink to a title add functionality it can also be used in combination with other external page wikilinks and does not break. Consider this title (Go to it and take a look - click the links) Mauritius (1618) or Mauritius (1618) or page Mauritius (1618 ship) and try the links from there (This amazed me!:).

Do any other regular wiki users have any thoughts on WIDeNing these basic navigation concepts on wiki? Thumb

No doubt if I just started doing this on wiki pages, I'd expect there will be opposition (until they dragged themselves into the 21st century and actually could see the use in it! ;^) What is needed is a concensus but how? This could bring a much greater functionality to such a progressive platform as Wikipedia, and once people start using it they might wonder how they did without it? - This is all my own personal opinion but hopefully can be seen to be valid and in a positive light. Hi Boab, thank you for your message. I'm not sure I fully understand your question(s), but in Wikipedia, every section on a page is automatically encoded with an anchor... and in wiki-markup, to link to that anchor, you would type something like this: [[Article title#Section name]]. Additional anchors can be placed within an article using the {{anchor}} tag, and linked to in the same manner. You may also find the {{fake heading}} template useful. From my understanding, H1, H2, etc. should not be used in your markup, as those are automatically inserted into the output when "=" wiki-headings are used. See WP:HEAD for details on their use. Ah, so this directly relates again, to your desire to find a quick and dirty way of having multiple tables of contents on a single page. I wish I could be of more help on that topic, but don't believe I've ever seen an article styled that way... I even continued to look for additional follow-up after we had last discussed it. Yes it does directly relate to that! Interesting that you kept looking for a solution, and so did I! Well I am actually now convinced that the solution that I am using here is the way to go, as the toc is the "accepted" and in use as a one off link table in the document, then why not use it, via the Contents links, as I have here. The idea of having all section headings linked (as I have done on this page) also improves functionality [eg. you get towards the of a browser pageful of info and you see just ahead (at bottom of the browser window) the next Section Heading (linked), Click on it and it instantly takes that to the top of the browser window (instead of scroll scroll with scroll wheel on the mouse, often multiple times). Anything that creates less work, such as the need to scroll versus an opportunity to click to achieve similar ends, that saves time and effort (repetitive strain injury), is of benefit. The beauty of this method is that it is so simple to implement and is stable and it seems is not totally out of the question, as far as rules go (see above re MOS:HEAD), but more a matter of becoming a "normality." I believe that Wiki could greatly benefit by making this a standard practise, to have all section headings to be automatically made (by the system) into links. So nothing would change for wiki users. New Challenge for Oceania and Australia

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest!
