V K Ahuja is a Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi and is presently serving as the Vice - Chancellor of National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJAA), India.[1][2][3][4][5] He has been a legal educator in the field of Intellectual Property Rights and International Law.

Education and Career

Professor Ahuja received his LL.M from Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, India.[6] He earned Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, India in 1991 and Ph.D. from University of Delhi in 2001. He did Law Teaching and Legal Research Skills course at the Cardiff Law School, Cardiff University, UK. He embarked on his journey as a Research Associate at Faculty of Law, University of Delhi in 1994. He started his teaching as Lecturer at Faculty of Law, University of Delhi in 1995. He served a short stint as Education Officer at the Institute of Company Secretaries of India, New Delhi (a statutory professional body) from 1997-98. Thereafter, he rejoined the University of Delhi and elevated to the position of Senior Lecturer in 2000. In the year 2004 he was promoted to the post of Reader. He served as the Principal of Lovely Institute of Law, Punjab (affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar) which is now a part of Lovely Professional University during 2005-2006. He became Associate Professor at University of Delhi in the year 2007 and Professor in 2010. He was appointed as Professor In-charge of Law Centre-II, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, Delhi for the period of 2017-2020.[7] During his Professor In-Chargeship, he hosted Sh. Pranab Mukherjee, former President of India and Sh. Michael Ashwin Satyandre Adhin, Vice President of Republic of Suriname at the University of Delhi besides organizing a number of national as well as international events. He also served as Joint Director of Delhi School of Public Policy and Governance[8], established under Institute of Eminence (IOE), University of Delhi (2020–2022).[9] He was member of the Governing Body of Hindu College and Aryabhatta College of University of Delhi. He is a member of Board of Management of Judicial Academy, Assam and also a Member of General Council of Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University, Visakhapatnam. He served at Board of Studies/Academic Council/Executive Council of several Central and State Universities such as Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim University, Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Law University, Sonipat, School of Law, VIT-AP University, B.B. Ambedkar University, Lucknow to name a few. He was the Regional Co-Ordinator for the entire North-East for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) in the year 2021 and member of Governing Body of Consortium of NLUs[10]. He was Visiting Faculty at the Indian Law Institute (Deemed University), New Delhi, 2009–10 and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi, 2010. In June 2021 Professor Ahuja was appointed Vice - Chancellor of National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam, India.

Awards

In 2003 he received the first prize as an exemplary teacher in the Fifth South Asian Teaching Session on International Humanitarian Law and Refugee Law organized jointly by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and National Law School of India University, Bangalore.[11]

Prof. Ahuja authored many books related to laws. The following are some of the books under his name.

  • Law of Copyright and Neighboring Rights: National and International Perspectives (1st edition 2005, 2nd edition 2015),[13][14]
  • Public International Law (1st edition 2016, 2nd edition, 2021)[15]
  • Intellectual Property Rights in India (1st edition 2009, 2nd edition 2015).[16]
  • In 2009 he published Halsbury Annotated Statutes of India (Vol.2 and Vol.5).

He is the editor of Human Rights: Contemporary Issues - A Festschrift in the Honour of Professor Upendra Baxi (2019); co-editor of Legal Education in India in 21st Century: Problems and Prospects (1999); Law of Copyright: From Gutenberg's Invention to Internet (2001); The Law of Intellectual Property Rights: In Prospect and Retrospect (2001); Human Rights in 21st Century: Changing Dimensions (2012); Mediation (2020); Intellectual Property Rights: Contemporary Developments (2020); International Law: Contemporary Developments (2021); and Mukul Asher on Economic Reasoning and Public Policy: Case Studies from India (2021)[17]

Articles

Prof. Ahuja published over fifty articles in the National (UGC Care enlisted) and International Journals such as European Intellectual Property Review and scores of book chapters.[18][19]

He also credited with the publication of one monograph, reading and case materials[20] and book reviews. Prof. Ahuja has profusely contributed to legal policy debates of the country and abroad. Prof. Ahuja guided many research scholars successfully[21].

Projects

He completed a Research Project on the topic "State Practice on Implementation of International Law in India: An Analytical Study of Constitutional Provisions and Case Laws" under the "Scheme to Strengthen R & D Doctoral Research Programme by providing funds to University Faculty" of University of Delhi in 2008-09[22].

Other Contributions

Prof. Ahuja delivered lectures at World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Delhi Judicial Academy[23], Bihar Judicial Academy[24] and Jharkhand Judicial Academy[25], Ranchi, UGC Refresher Programs and Orientation Programs. He was invited as Chief Guest and Guest of Honour by many Law Schools and Universities.[26]
