The German Tarok group of card games encompasses those games which, although not true Tarock games themselves, have been adapted from them to use standard French-, German- or Swiss-suited cards. Typical characteristics:

  • Positive point-trick games
  • Trump suit; Hearts is often a permanent trump suit in the lower contract (Frage or equivalent) and a preference suit in the higher contract (Solo or equivalent)
  • If players cannot follow suit, they must play a trump
  • Soloist plays against the two (or sometimes three) defenders
  • Soloist announces in bidding whether he will play with or without the talon/stock
