The Best Of, Volume 1 is the fifth compilation album by British synthpop group Depeche Mode The album was released 13 November 2006 by Mute Records (see 2006 in British music). Other compilation albums by the band include Catching Up with Depeche Mode, People Are People, both North American-only releases, The Singles 81>85, and The Singles 86>98.

The current collection consists of selected Depeche Mode hits from their twenty-five year career. Along with the recent hits from the Playing The Angel album, a new song "Martyr" is also included in this collection and was released as a single in late October.

A bonus edition was released with the album which included a DVD with music videos. (Called The Best of Depeche Mode Videos) You can spot the limited edition since it features a red flower on the cover instead of a white one. The DVD will be released by itself in Q1 2007, but without the documentary.

The digital version of the album, available on iTunes, contains the track from the CD, as well as a selection of five bonus remixes. From these new remixes, one can be found also on CD ("Never let me down again" - Digitalism Remix, on the "Martyr" single), four are available also on vinyl ("Never let me donw again" - Digitalism remix, "Personal Jesus" - Boys Noize Rework, "Everything Counts" - Oliver Huntemann & Stephan Bodzin Dub and "People are People" - Underground Resistance Remix, on the "Martyr" single).

Limited edition releases (with bonus DVD)

This edition is the complete one, excerpt for the new remixes included on the digital download version. It includes the tracks from the CD on the first disc (same, a CD) and a selection of videos on the second disc (the DVD). Beside the videos, on the DVD there is a documentary, the Electronic Press Kit of the album.

Video release

For those who didn't care about the audio track, and want to see just the videos, Mute released a DVD wich contains the same tracklist as the bonus DVD from the CD+DVD edition, excerpt for the documentary. Eight of these clips were released for the first time on DVD: "Just can't get enough", "Everything counts", People are people", "Master and servant", "Shake the disease", Dream on", I feel loved", "Enjoy the silence 04". The oldest ones can be found on the video release "Some great videos" in 1985 or its re-release renamed "The videos 81-85" in 1998, both on VHS. The last three, were not commercially available. On this DVD is not present the clip from the album's single "Martyr".

Miscellanea

  • The CD compilation contains a song from every studio album except Black Celebration. The DVD features every album except A Broken Frame, which is consistent with the band's disdain for that album era's videos.
  • The compilation contains no songs with Martin Gore on lead vocals.
  • The "Volume 1" is decoration, there are no plans for a second volume.
  • The Best Of, Volume 1 shares a release scheme similar to the previous Depeche Mode compilation, The Singles 86>98. All the tracks are from previous albums, except for one: the new single "Martyr", which was released shortly before the compilation. Similarly, in 1998, "Only When I Lose Myself" was released in May, followed by The Singles 86>98 in August. "Shake the Disease" and "It's Called a Heart" were also new when Depeche Mode released their first singles collection, The Singles (81-85), in 1985.
