Newyorkborn

Report date June 22 2009, 03:35 (UTC)
[edit]
Suspected sockpuppets

Evidence submitted by User:208.120.47.96

User Finessman came out of nowhere to attack IP:208.120.47.96 as well as user MadCoverboy [1] after user Newyorkborn had been attacking same IP address and attacked Madcoverboy. Madcoverboy responded [2] and asked not to be attacked to user Newyorkborn. Newyorkborn stated that he is a graduate and allumnus of St. John's University [3], but it was discovered that Newyorkborn also edits from 67.83.77.6 [4] and his history [5] shows that he in fact wrote in the past "(I work in the University's Office of Marketing and Communications and have a Wikipedia account; have continued to make revisions that reflect names, info as described on the University's Web site)" and " (The original page did not reflect St. John's prominence in education and the sciences. I serve in the Marketing and Communications Department at the University -- I updated this on April 9, 2007.) " User is in fact editing from St. John's University [6] and seems to be attempting to take control of the page for the university, rather than have the free knowledge for everyone. They both use the same arguments, one came right after the other, and both refer to the same facebook page, which can't be easily viewed unless its researched. 208.120.47.96 (talk) 03:35, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

newyorkborn had launched multiple attacks [7], rants/raves [8], launced conspiracty theories [9], and manifesto's [10]. These are similiar to those launched by Finesseman in his short edit history here [11] . 208.120.47.96 (talk) 13:50, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Clerk declined. Given the similarity of the edits, it's clear that both users have the same MO (for example, making many new section headers). The IPs geolocate to the same area, so it's a WP:DUCK case. PeterSymonds (talk) 20:20, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In response to the creation of another blatant sock Nycmedicman (talk · contribs), I've reversed my decline, and request a checkuser to look into 1) whether the 149.68.0.0/16 range is creating the accounts or not, and 2) if a non-collateral IP block is possible. Thank you. PeterSymonds (talk) 00:39, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Clerk, patrolling admin and checkuser comments
Conclusions
  • Accounts blocked/tagged.
  • IPs blocked (55 hours and 24 hours respectively).
  • St John's University is (unsurprisingly) on range 149.68.0.0/16. It might be worth a short block if this continues.

Inconclusive The IPs are in the same state, but different counties. It may be someone home now that the semester is over or it mat be two different people. More conclusive indications of a relationship will need to be made based on a behavioral or stylistic basis. -- Avi (talk) 04:14, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
