Janek Ambros (born April 19, 1988) is an American film director, screenwriter, and film producer.[1] He also founded Assembly Line Entertainment, a film production company..[2]. He directed the film Mondo Hollywoodland.[3]

Directing

His first feature, Imminent Threat, which he also wrote, edited, and produced with Academy Award nominee James Cromwell [4] was released in late 2015 to mixed reviews.[5][6]

His second film, Money, Fascism, and Some Sort of Acid is an anthology of various shorts on American imperialism, Wall Street, and western nationalism that came out in 2020.[7] [8]

Ambros' third film as a director, Mondo Hollywoodland was released in 2021, theatrically and on VOD.[9] The film won the Jury Prize for Creative Vision at the Downtown Los Angeles Film Festival.[10] The film was executive produced by James Cromwell, marking their second collaboration.[11] The film was released to positive reviews.[12][13][14][15][16]. The film was shot on an iPhone. [17]

Ambros directed a documentary about the Ukrainian refugee crisis which was executive produced by two time Academy Award winner Janusz Kaminski. [18]

His upcoming film is an adaptation of Russell Lees' Nixon's Nixon which he producing frequent creative partner James Cromwell. [19] [20]

Ambros began his film career writing and directing Avante-Garde films.[21] His first was an adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Grand Inquisitor[22]. Ambros wrote and directed the Avant-garde film May 15th in Paris, a film about the rise of populism in France during 1848 with visuals from present day Paris, highlighting the rise of populism in the west.[23] The film was produced by Barbara De Fina.[24] The film was released in the summer/fall of 2017 on Amazon Prime and a limited theatrical release. Ambros and Martin Scorsese presented a lifetime achievement award to Krzysztof Zanussi at the Roots of Europe Festival in Spain after a screening of May 15th in Paris.[25]

Producing

His notable films as producer include Ten Thousand Saints, starring Hailee Steinfeld and Ethan Hawke which film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015, [26] and Human Capital which stars Maya Hawke and Marisa Tomei. [27].

In 2021, he produced the Ecuadorian documentary Legend of Tayos, which played theatrically in Latin America and on VOD in the U.S.[28]

He's producing a biopic on Francis Perkins which he also wrote. [29] [30]

Company

In the summer of 2017, his company, Assembly Line Entertainment, expanding to China when they brought in Jing Xue into the company.[31]

Other

Ambros wrote "While the Neo-Conservatives Slept", an essay where he interviewed former Chief of Staff to Colin Powell, Lawrence Wilkerson. It argues the "Never Trumpers" are responsible for the rise of Trump.[32]
