Kupiansk (Template:Lang-uk, translit. Kupyans’k) is a city in Kharkiv Oblast (province) of north-eastern Ukraine. It serves as the administrative center of Kupiansk Raion (district). It is an important railroad junction in the oblast. Kupiansk hosts the administration of Kupiansk Urban Hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine.[2]

Until 18 July 2020, Kupiansk was incorporated as a city of oblast significance and the center of Kupiansk Municipality. The municipality was abolished in July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Kharkiv Oblast to seven. The area of Kupiansk Municipality was merged into Kupiansk Raion.[3][4]

Overview

Kupyansk railway station

Kupiansk is located on the bank of the river Oskol. Kupiansk is divided into three subparts, known as: Kupyansk (main part of town), Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi (where the train station is), and Kivsharivka.

Kupiansk is about 2 1/2 hours from Kharkiv. There are connections by train or bus.

History

Kupiansk was occupied during World War II by Nazi Germany from July 24, 1942 to February 3, 1943.

Kupiansk has been occupied by Russian forces since February 27, 2022.[1] Although the Ukrainian army destroyed a railway bridge to slow the enemy advance, three days later Hennadiy Matsehora, the mayor of Kupiansk from the Opposition Platform — For Life party, surrendered the city to the Russian Army that day in exchange for peace, as they threatened to take it by force. As a result, the Ukrainian government indicted Matsehora for treason the next day.[5][6] On February 28, Matsehora was arrested by Ukrainian authorities.[7]
