Volodymyr Anatoliyovych Baranyuk (Template:Lang-uk) is a Ukrainian serviceman, Colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, commander of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade since 2021 to 2022. Participant in the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2014, he led the 1st Separate Marine Battalion during the Russian takeover of Crimea.[1]
Baranyuk was appointed Commander of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade on September 2021. On 19 March 2022, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, president Zelensky awarded the Order Hero of Ukraine to two commanders of the main Ukrainian units defending Mariupol, Volodymyr Baranyuk from the 36th Separate Marine Brigade and Denys Prokopenko from Azov Battalion.[2]
Ukrainian media reported that a column of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade made a successful attempt to link up with Ukrainian forces present in Azovstal but some elements were injured, killed and captured. The whereabouts of Commander Volodymyr Baranyuk were unknown.[3]
As of May 8th, 2022 Baranyuk appeared alive in an interview with RT proving previous reports of his death to be false. It is said that he was apprehended hiding in a field together with a number of his men a few kilometers north of Mariupol.[4]
