Mahara (Mara,Mahra, also Mehra,Phartiyal/Fartiyal are same surnames) are usually found in Uttarakhand Kumaon Region of India and far western region of Nepal. They belong to Kshatriya/Rajput community having no relation to Mehra Punjabi and Mahar of Maharashtra and other state of India. Acoording to book kumaon ka ithihas written by B. D. Panday
they came with Chand kings to kumaon, and also some migrated to western part of Nepal, in Chand rule Some of them are chiefs(Thokdars), some are soldiers, Landholders.
