Rapcore (also known as rap rock and rap metal) is a fusion genre consistent of hip hop and rock music, which is also heavily influenced by metal and hardcore, and sometimes draws from punk rock, funk and other genres.
The terms rapcore and nu metal are almost interchangeable when referring to bands such as Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and P.O.D. Rapcore and funk metal influences also go hand in hand in the music of Urban Dance Squad, Rage Against the Machine and Faith No More. The term rap metal is sometimes used to refer to more metal-leaning rapcore bands, such as Korn.
Like nu metal, the term rapcore can refer to a variety of different musical styles, from Run-D.M.C. to that of Korn.
Genre history
Rapcore developed in the mid to late 1980s, alongside funk metal.
The roots of rapcore are found in work of artists such as Anthrax, Public Enemy, Run-D.M.C., Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Biohazard, Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E., 311, Suicidal Tendencies and Faith No More. Two of the first dedicated rapcore groups to receive mainstream attention were Rage Against the Machine and Urban Dance Squad, while it is unknown who are the first full-fledged rap-rock band.
Themes
Rapcore's lyrical themes range from politics (Rage Against the Machine, downset., Senser, Aztlan Underground), to hip hop frivolity (Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, Crazy Town), to personal struggles (Linkin Park, Korn).
