Alvin Tan Sheng Hui (Chinese: 陈圣辉; pinyin: Chén Shènghuì; born 1980)[1] is a Singaporean politician who has been serving as Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth, and Trade and Industry since 2020. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Moulmein–Cairnhill ward of Tanjong Pagar GRC since 2020.
Before entering politics, Tan had worked at various organisations, including the Ministry of Defence, Oxfam, United Nations, Goldman Sachs, Facebook and LinkedIn. He made his political debut in the 2020 general election when he joined a five-member PAP team contesting in Tanjong Pagar GRC and they won with 63.13% of the vote.
Education
Tan graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Economics with first class honours degree under the Singapore Armed Forces' Local Study Award scholarship.[2]
He later went on to obtain a Master of Public Policy degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government.[2]
He also received the 2008 Tan Kah Kee Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship and the International and Global Affairs Fellowship from the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University.[3]
Career
Tan has worked in the private, public and non-profit sectors at various organisations, including the Ministry of Defence, Oxfam and the United Nations. From 2010 to 2015, he worked in investment banking at Goldman Sachs in Singapore and Hong Kong. He was also Head of Public Policy and Trust and Safety at Facebook and Head of Public Policy and Economics for the Asia-Pacific region at LinkedIn.[2][3][4]
Political career
Tan made his political debut in the 2020 general election when he was announced as a People's Action Party (PAP) candidate contesting in Tanjong Pagar GRC. Before that, he had been a community volunteer at Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng since 2005 and at Moulmein-Cairnhill since 2019, and had worked with Lily Neo,[4] the Member of Parliament representing Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng from 1997 to 2020.
Tan joined the five-member PAP team contesting in Tanjong Pagar GRC during the 2020 general election, and they won with 63.13% of the vote against the Progress Singapore Party.[5] Tan thus became a Member of Parliament representing the Moulmein–Cairnhill ward of Tanjong Pagar GRC. On 1 September 2020, Tan was appointed Minister of State at the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Ministry of Trade and Industry.[1]
Personal life
Tan is married with two children.[2][3]
