A barnstar for you!

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
Thank you, Sarah, for being--forgive the shortness of the phrase--such a cool person! I still remember our talk at Wikimania which was full of laugh and jokes :) And thank you for being such a nice person on OTRS -- this is appreciated not only by us the OTRS agents, but specifically by the people for whom you are the first line of Wikipedia.

Again, thanks, and I hope on working with you in the future again! odder (talk) 23:16, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

And another

Mind the Gap Award
For all your work on the Gendergap list, and translating that into real and lasting improvements in the projects. (And also, not least, for creating this award. I think it is only fitting you should be the first to receive it.) Keep on trucking! JN466 01:50, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Scoop it

Checked out your Scoop It page and was quite shocked when I saw this article:

http://www.tomsguide.com/us/research-wikipedia-gender-bias,news-12168.html

Just shortly after I registered on Wikipedia, I was blocked by an admin for being a supposed sockpuppet. The admin did not give any reasons of why he thought I was one, which he should have according to the Wikipedia blocking policy. Also, the only evidence listed was evidence that pointed towards me not being one. When I made a block appeal, it was denied on the grounds that I could still be a sockpuppet even if something pointed towards me not being one (note that again nothing was said about why they thought I was one).

I appealed again and this time it was said I was an obvious sockpuppet, again without saying why. Only after I wrote to the arbitration commission, it was finally acknowledged that I was probably no sockpuppet at all.

The original blocker never apologized or gave any reasons of why he blocked me. Before I was blocked, many of my edits were on topics related to women in history. I regularly cited sources, which would have made it difficult to simply revert my edits. Had I been less tenacious and quit, it would have meant another woman less on this site. Before I thought the admin had just been overhasty, but after having read that article, I can't help but wonder gender had something to do with it. Peaceingalaxy (talk) 02:18, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

If you really want to be depressed, read the sexist moronfest which is most of the comments on the article. Never heard of this Tom's Guide; don't think I want to hang there (and I'm a guy)! --Orange Mike | Talk 20:52, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
You're right: it didn't cheer me up. Thanks for letting me know about it, though Peaceingalaxy (talk) 06:46, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Hope you don't mind, but I tried to spiff up the Ada Lovelace Award, including colorizing the graphic. If it doesn't seem like an improvement, feel free to revert it :) Kaldari (talk) 02:45, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

hi

Hi Sarah, I just wanted to mention this. While I don't mind you doing it this time it is actually not appropriate to do so. I'm not being persnickety such actions (even innocent ones) have led to needless arguments and in hopes of you avoiding all that I just wanted to let you know--Cailil talk 19:31, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

Also by the way I have deleted your reply to this comment[1]. Please do not encourage unconstructive commenters by replying to them just ignore them (or when they are as obviously unconstructive please do remove them per WP:TPG)--Cailil talk 19:31, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

A belated thanks for your welcome message! I noticed you're a Museum studies person. I started out in archives before moving to libraries, so I've always had a soft spot for museum studies. woman vs. girl

First, let me say that I applaud your recent cleanup work on the Sebastopol, California article.

That said, I'm puzzled by your recent decision to re-caption the Curtis photo at Sonoma County, California to be more gender neutral and respectful. I understand that describing a women as a girl would be disrespectful. To my mind, however, calling a woman a girl is little better. I don't see any evidence that the individual pictured was mature enough to be described as a woman. On the other hand, the LoC website from which the image was obtained describes the subject as a girl.

And how is the word "girl" any more gender-neutral than the word "woman"? To me, neither word is at all neutral; they both unambiguously imply female gender.

If the image is offensive or controversial, perhaps we should select a different one. The Curtis collection contains several historic photos of Pomo adults that might serve.

What are your thoughts on the issue?

Best regards,—Stepheng3 (talk) 20:44, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Stephen - Thanks for stopping by. I had a feeling someone might be triggered by my change. I chose to change "girl" to woman because it is more gender neutral when the age of a woman in the image is unknown - the female photographed could be 14 or could be 20, and at first look, I chose to consider her as a woman. Oddly enough, I have spent numerous years studying Curtis and his work (my undergrad is in Native American Studies and the representation of people was my focus, including the work of Curtis).
Thanks for posting the LoC link, the actual direct link to the image is here (not a dead link). He describes her as a Pomo girl. I'm going to change the Sebastopol image to describe it as "Pomo girl c. 1924, by Edward S. Curtis' from The North American Indian volume 14." instead. If it's needed I can ask some Pomo friends if it's an okay image to have featured if you feel that's needed, bu then comes that odd part of "well, it's public domain....." :-/ My friend, White Wolf, might even be happy to supply contemporary photos - perhaps I'll ask him for the hell of it! Thanks again for stopping by, and I hope you are comfortable with the modification that I make to the caption. On a side note, in an American English sense, I'd rather be described as a woman than a girl...(and I'm 31!)...it's more of a sense of empowerment, non-fragility and strength, than being described as a "girl" who is often the definition of feminine weakness, naivety and innocence in some contexts... Hopefully this gives a bit of insight :) Thank you again for stopping by...and for all the work you do and develop for Wikipedia!! SarahStierch (talk) 01:01, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your prompt and courteous reply.
I'm again confused by your use of the term "gender-neutral" but will let it go since it's not the central issue.
I quite understand not wanting to be called a girl if you're 31 years old, yet I imagine you would've found it jarring when you were 11. It's difficult to estimate age in this case, particularly if one allows for the possibility that the subject may have been a smallpox survivor. I'm satisfied with the current caption, though it occurs to me that "young Pomo woman" might better satisfy us both.
As for the choice of images, I'm happy with the Curtis photo. And since the context is 19th-century onomastics, I think a photo of a more contemporary modern Pomo individual (such as Ras K-Dee) would not work as well here.
Keep up the good work! —Stepheng3 (talk) 06:56, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

WLL Chicago and WLL NM

Firstly, I did WLL Chicago not WLL MN. Secondly, the event was very modest. 4 people attended and only two had computers (one being me). For a collaborative editing session, it did not really work out.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 21:45, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

My apologies about MN! I had made a small template for requesting submissions, and it was a mere accident. I'm quite aware you are in Chicago! Sorry the event didn't work out. I know folks appreciated the effort though. SarahStierch (talk) 21:47, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
Unfortunately, WLL NM (almost MN) did not work out either. Tony had four more attendees than I had. Given the choice between staying there by myself and just doing some editing and gong home and doing my laundry, I choose the latter. My best prospect just emailed me some stuff and asked me to post it for him. That ain't gonna happen. Likely I will just continue giving folks one-on-one training as the need arises. One of my self-imposed roles in life to to assure that the need does arise. At a New Mexico State Library workshop this weekend I did just that, and I am planning to offer a wikipedia editing workshop at the next NMSL conference, but this is not YET the sort of story that you looking for. So, thanks for the invite to share, but . . ............Carptrash (talk) 23:29, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

First page in Swahili

Thank you to Isaac Kosgei for completing the translation of the Wikipedia article on Larry Abramson into Swahili. This is the 7th language for this article – in addition to German, Dutch, Chinese, Hebrew, Russian and English!

There is a language link from here and a direct link here

Isaac and I met at the Wikimania conference in August. We hope to continue working together in the future.

Sarah, We have a few nice news flashes (including a succesful "Behind the scenes tour"), would you want to write another joint update for the project? Drkup(IMJ) (talk) 07:46, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
Hi there. Really happy to hear that things are going well. I regret to say this but *right now* I am so burdened with my school work and coinciding internships that I honestly have to really keep my time close to the projects I am directly involved in. In the future I do hope I can lend my time out to more GLAM projects, but right now, I have to keep it really close to home, per se. However, cultural partners list can offer opportunities and of course I encourage your Wikipedian in Residence to take the reigns and write content for This Month in GLAM. Again, I regret I've been unable to participate, but, I'm just overwhelmed right now :( SarahStierch (talk) 13:15, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Mistake

Hey Sarah! I wanted to move my subpage to main space and I think I made a mistake [3]. Now "User:Sonicyouth86/Woman's film" redirects to Woman's film. Could you have a look? Thanks. --Sonicyouth86 (talk) 00:08, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Ah yes, easy to fix! I went to the user page you shared above and it directed me to the article. The article title said it was a redirect, so I clicked on the little redirect link that appeared below the article title and saw your page with the direct link. I edited it and just deleted the redirect. (You can even nominate that user page for deletion if you want.) So there! I've done it also =) That's an awesome article!!!! Thank you for starting it! SarahStierch (talk) 00:13, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
But the article doesn't appear like a new article. Usually, when you move a subpage to main space or create a new article you have that "N" thingy for the first edit in the edit history. And when you type in "Woman's f" Wikipedia suggests "Woman's fool" and "Woman's Freedom League" but not "Woman's film". That normal? Btw, thanks for the award! --Sonicyouth86 (talk) 00:21, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
The lack of "N" is probably because it was originally a redirect, so I'm sure your userpage maybe showed up like that? Regarding the search part - it usually can take 24 hours or so for it to show up when you start searching for it, from my experience. You're welcome, thanks for all you do =) SarahStierch (talk) 00:24, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
Alright. Hey, how does one usually move a page from user space to main space? Just for future reference so that I don't embarrass myself again with such a faux pas. Right back at you! You must be one of the most active, helpful, kind (and under-appreciated imo) editors I've come across. --Sonicyouth86 (talk) 00:32, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
Ugh, I just read the directions on "How to move a page", it's rather complicated here but rather simple in my world :) When you are ready to move a page from your userspace (or because you find a mistake or a misspelled title, or whatever) you click the little arrow on the top left of the page (next to the star) and click "move". Then it'll show the page you want to move (i.e. User/Sonicyouth86/Woman's film) and it'll give you the space to fill in the page (title) you want to move it to (i.e. Woman's film). Fill that in, then fill in a reason (i.e. "Moving from user space" "Title not capitalized") and then hit "Move page". That should do the trick, any problems, you know where to find me. And thanks for those kind words, they have left me rather speechless (and if you ever meet me offline, you'll know that's a rare thing!). :) SarahStierch (talk) 00:38, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Rollerbillies

Thanks again for your help. I have no idea how Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Romsey Town Rollerbillies (2nd nomination) will go, but it seems Laura really doesn't like me. So, I proposed some kind of a third-party mediation "perhaps" with your help mediating, but then I remembered that you were busy, and I think it would be better just to let things settle down and see what happens over time. Laura deletes questions from me on her talk page, has me "on ignore" on IRC, and when I proposed a teleconference on Tinychat she threatened to report me for WP:HOUND on WP:ANI. I wouldn't mind if she wasn't stalking me and canvassing people with whom she has had no interactions independent of me, and telling people I'm a men's rights activist who is trying to advance an agenda at the expense of women's sports, and nominating articles I created for deletion and then blanking sections. I hope I will be able to look back at this and laugh as soon as possible. Any advice welcome. Dualus (talk) 03:46, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Sorry to hear the article is up again for deletion. I think it's in your best interest to remove all emotions when contributing - it's hard, but, it's the best advice I can give right now - stay neutral, respect policy, and work towards advancing the encyclopedia. Perhaps focus on some less controversial subjects for a while. (and who'd think roller derby would be controversial? LOL) I told Laura, and now I tell you - if you feel that your personal boundaries are being violated and stalking is a concern (as you both state publicly on IRC and on Wikipedia), perhaps the issues between you two needs to be handled by Wikiquette or a higher level of organizational support. I am flattered you'd think I'm someone who could possibly assist in this meditation, but, right now, I have to decline. Thanks for dropping by and I'm sorry I cannot help more in regards to saving that article. We'll just wait and see! SarahStierch (talk) 04:29, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
Speedily deleted. I just intend to get a WP:REFUND, put the article back in the WP:INCUBATOR, and leave it at that. If anyone ever needs help with gendergap-related work in the future, please have them ask someone else. Dualus (talk) 07:06, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
Again, if you two have problems, I'd take it up with other folks. No surprise about the article, and as a side note - this seems to be the one of the very few "issues" anyone has had in regards to gender work on Wikipedia. Perhaps joining the mailing list you'd be able to learn more about the landscape and find articles that are not controversial (again, this article should not be controversial, it's roller derby for godsake) to work on. I appreciate the efforts of both you and Laura. SarahStierch (talk) 12:43, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
  • Sarah, you moved this article back to the mainspace almost immediately after the deletion (including the sourcing) was endorsed at DRV. Were you aware of this when you made the move? Also, did you review the AFD before the move to establish whether the issues leading to deletion had been addressed in the draft? Spartaz Humbug! 07:26, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
@Spartaz. Hi, thanks for dropping by. I did review the previous delete, and having worked on a few roller derby articles (and been active in the sport myself), and after reviewing the content I did feel it was capable of keeping. There are less notable musicians on Wikipedia =) But, regardless, I'm not really emotionally connected to any of this. I did fail to look at dates of the deletion, etc, but, it did seem to spike some conversation hopefully that shows the issue between these two users, which I think is of bigger concern than one small derby article, and affects the health of the community. Thanks again for coming by and I apologize for failing to check out the dates! SarahStierch (talk) 12:43, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
And on a side note, I did look at every link but that one. To be honest, it's a bit confusing how the process works, including the incubator review, etc. I'm no idiot, but, if even I found this a little too complex, I surely can't be the only user who has made mistakes like this. Again, thanks for coming by! I think we can safely have this deletion blow over and more onto other important areas of work! =) SarahStierch (talk) 12:44, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
I think its fair to say that Dualus seems to polarise the views of people working around them and that this leads to controversy and drama so inciting discussion isn't always good. I'd just ask you to take care in future if you are restoring something from the incubator to be sure that you are not superimposing your personal view over a recent consensus from a discussion. If there are any doubts, its always possible to ask DRV to review a draft and give an opinion on whether its ready for mainspace. Spartaz Humbug! 18:06, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for Barnyard award and question

Hello SarahStierch, I first want to thank you for your award! I did however have a question in regards to administrative rules/roles. Is there a procedure to "report" someone for things such as personal attacks, uncivility etc, or is it up to the administrator to notice and decide? I'm talking about the Men's Rights page of course (so probation of the article would also be relevant I would imagine). Thanks! TickTock2 (talk) 13:17, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi Ticktock! You're welcome! Let's see, there are a few different options:
  • Wikipedia:Wikiquette assistance "is a forum where editors who feel they are being treated uncivilly can request assistance from other editors in resolving a situation. The goal is to help all parties in a situation come to a mutually agreeable resolution. It is designed to function by persuasion, reason, and community support, not threats and blocks."
  • Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal if you think you just want a mediator to help resolve a dispute. Of course, it takes two to tango in this and perhaps the other party won't participate or doesn't have interest!
  • Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment#Request_comment_on_users Request for comment allows other users to comment on the behavior; however this is only able to be used if the "offending" user has been contacted by two different editors for their behavior.
  • Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents This is where you can go to inform administrators of their behavior and seek help. Usually an admin not involved (i.e. kaldari or whoever else is an admin editing the article) will help out.
  • Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration is where you go when the other two won't work - it means serious business, if the other two don't work out. You can also
I hope this helps! SarahStierch (talk) 13:26, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your help! It does! Thanks a lot! There sure is a lot of bureaucracy to this :) TickTock2 (talk) 15:14, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Strawberry cupcake!

Merci for your kind message and support! :] I have always been a lone actor, and hadn't thought until recently about joining communities on Wikipedia. I'd read about women being underrepresented as editors, and am so down to work toward reversing that! I want to be more involved with Wikimedia and am in contact with a couple of current Campus Ambassadors... ;]

Let's definitely K.I.T.! Sending you solidarity vibes! Eekiv (talk) 03:14, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

OH, and I just changed my gender from "undisclosed" to "female"!

Quote boxes

Hi Sarah,

It's nice to be an inspiration! :) Yes, I find the quote boxes very good for supporting an article, especially when it helps a reader to understand what the text is referring to. In Fallen woman the quote boxes were supposed to exemplify (and prove) the way the idea has been used in literature. I was also really happy that in such a case some really good writing, in this case, some really good poetry, was the appropriate illustration. That is a bonus for the encyclopaedia since it can introduce readers to those writers and build up knowledge. I love the way WP can do this. I used a quote box in Children's Chapel, St James' Church, Sydney because the art works that are the subject of the article illustrate a Christmas carol so the reader needs the text of it. I also like the way you can use colours but a reviewer explained to me that there is almost no occasion when colours should be used according to the MOS so I am more conservative about this now. He was right to warn me about it. Using colours and boxes could be a bit like when fonts first became available. People became entranced with them and started to use every font they could find in one item. It all became very messy and ugly. In WP, I think we would have to be careful that quote boxes do not simply become Pull quotes which are used in newspapers more to entice than to inform (and where they are sometimes so poorly chosen as to be misleading). It's easy to see they could become distracting in WP so now I always try to consider carefully whether it is helpful to the article itself. Cheers, Whiteghost.ink 01:24, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Hey - I hung out with Pete Forsyth yesterday and your name came up. You guys are doing so many cool things down there that I just wanted to say hello. --David Shankbone 20:00, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Awe! Hi David! Thanks for coming by and sending a postcard :) I regret I was unable to come up for the weekend - I had planned to, but, sadly, "grad school" (aka poverty) is priority. A cool shot, and thank you! Trying to keep the revolution wheels turning as best I can, so thanks for the kind words! SarahStierch (talk) 20:03, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

GLAM 2012

Hi! Would it be appropriate for those not familiar with the DC Metro map and Amtrak links available as well as the airport to add them? Not all travel guides reference them for those not 'local'.

Example:

Please forgive poor spacing... I *WILL* get the hang of it in a snap! Please don't hesitate to private email/talk me as you deem appropriate Chuckla (talk) 01:36, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Yes, for the GLAM US event, we just haven't gotten the grant yet so I haven't solidified if it's happening to proceed with further planning. Keep in mind the event is specific for the US! Glad to have your thoughts, links, and to have you stop by. Thanks! We'll keep folks posted as the event becomes fully official. SarahStierch (talk) 04:27, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

I am well aware, thank you! I was aware when the IP first posted it but I have regretfully allowed other things to get in the way. As with all Wikipedia errors and projects - I appreciate you both letting me know, and as you are aware I don't own the article, so I ask that all interested parties help to fix and investigate it. With so many articles on my watch list sometimes I can't get around to maintaining everything with my busy schedule. Thanks again for dropping by! SarahStierch (talk) 12:55, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
