Chongqing University of Science and Technology is located in Shapingba District of Chongqing City and supported by the Chongqing Municipal People's government and the China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petrochemical Corporation, and China National Offshore Oil Corporation. The university was part of the "Engineering Excellence Education Program" and the "Data China 100 School Project". The university's programs focus on petrochemicals, metallurgy, machinery, materials, electronics, and environmental protection. Courses are offered across science, engineering, economics, management, law, literature and the arts.

Location and campus

Chongqing University of Science and Technology is a full-time public university offering both bachelor and master degree programs. It was officially established with the approval of the ministry of Education in May 2004 through the merger of two well-reputed colleges founded in 1951 under the administration of two ministries of central government, viz.-Chongqing Polytechnic College and Chongqing Petroleum College. The latter was awarded as a key college listed in the national model tertiary technical college. The university has received multiple designations, including pilot unit of the National Education Training Program for Excellent Engineers, deputy-directorial member of the National Association of Universities of Applied Sciences, deputy-directorial member of the National Union of New Colleges and Universities, and directorial member of Chongqing Municipal Universities Transformation and Development Alliance. It has been strongly supported by Chongqing Municipal government as a high-level new engineering college, and rated a National Model College in Innovation And Entrepreneurship as well as National Model College in Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform. In 2018, it was accredited to be an institution officially permitted to offer master degree programs

CQUST covers an area of nearly 140 hectares, with a total built-up area of more than 600,000 square meters that houses 497 million Yuan worth of research equipment. It is located in the University town of Chongqing high-tech zone, which is regarded as the intellectual core of the Chongqing science city under construction and the important base of the western China scientific and technological innovation center. Next to Gele Mountain National Forest Park in the east and Jinyun Mountain National Forest Park in the west, the university is an ideal place to study, do sports, and enjoy life with its ample facilities. The library has an area of more than 44,000 square meters housing 1.91 million printed books, and over 1.92 million e-books, and an abundant collection of digital resources. The university is recognized as a garden-style institution of higher learning in Chongqing.

Presently, it has more than 1,500 faculty members, with over 1,200 full-time teachers, including 3 members of China Engineering Academy, 610 teachers with senior professional titles , over 400 doctoral degree holders, and 90 percent of the faculty have master’s degrees or above. There are more than 120 high-caliber talents at provincial and ministerial levels such as; members of University Teaching Guidance Committee of the Education Ministry, national technical talents, Chongqing Talent Program, Bayu Scholars Program, academic (industrial) technology leaders, Young and Middle-aged Pillar Teachers etc. There are more than 20,000 full-time students, including more than 600 postgraduates and 400 international students from Bangladesh, Pakistan, USA, Mexico, Columbia, Laos, India, Afghanistan and many other countries in the world.

CQUST has 16 schools: School of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, School of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, School of Safety Engineering (School of Emergency Management), School of Marxism, School of Business Administration, School of Law, Political Science, Business and Trade, School of Mathematics and Big Data, School of Foreign Language, School of Humanities and Arts, Department of Sports Science and Physical Education, School of Intelligent Technology and Engineering, Normal School of Vocational and Technical Education (School of Continuing Education, Self-Education Examination Department). The university runs 7 professional and academic master’s programs in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Safety Engineering, Geography Engineering, Metallurgy Engineering, Chemistry and other fields.

It runs 65 undergraduate programs: Petroleum Engineering, Metallurgy Engineering, Mechanical Design Manufacturing and Automation, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Internet of Things Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Civil Engineering, Safety Engineering, Data Science and Big Data Technology, Accounting, International Economies and Trade, English, Art and Design, etc. Among them, Petroleum Engineering and Metallurgy Engineering are national first-class majors, and 17 majors such as Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Automation, Chemistry Engineering and Technology, Civil Engineering, Safety Engineering, Computer Science and Technology are first-class majors in Chongqing. It has 2 national-level specialty majors, 5 majors in the National Program for the Educational Cultivation of Excellent Engineers and 16 municipal-level specialty majors. Additionally, 8 majors have received the accreditation from t Engineering Education Accreditation Association to enter the ‘top tier’ of global engineering education.

The university continues to deepen the reform of education and teaching, and expand the development of teaching platform, curriculum and teaching materials. In the teaching achievement recognition contest in the most recent two years, , the university has won 2 prizes of national-level teaching achievement, 14 provincial- or ministerial-level teaching achievements in total. It has built 2 national-level and 8 municipal-level Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, 1 national-level and 3 municipal-level Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Centers, and 4 national-level Engineering Practice Education Centers. The university has 3 national-level excellent courses, including “Hydraulic Transmission Technology".

CQUST focuses on disciplines of Engineering, specialized especially in petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, metallurgy and materials engineering, machinery and electronics, safety and environmental protection. The school has been implementing coordinated development of science, engineering, economics, management, law, and liberal arts CQUST is home to ten key disciplines and specialty groups at provincial and ministerial level, including Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Control Science and Engineering, Safety Science and Engineering, etc. The school has a provincial and ministerial co-built laboratory for domestic waste recycling and utilization; two municipal collaborative innovation centers; eight provincial key laboratories dedicated to research on exploration and development of complex oil and gas fields, nanocomposite materials and devices, non-mine safety and major hazard monitoring, occupational hazard detection and identification, industrial fermentation microorganisms, energy engineering mechanics and disaster prevention and mitigation, nanocomposite medical detection technology, heavy oil exploitation; three municipal key laboratories studying development of unconventional oil and gas fields, online analysis and control of industrial processes, value-added treatment and clean extraction of complex metal mineral resources, etc. It also owns six provincial engineering technology research centers, three engineering research centers, two social science research centers, one academician expert workstation and four postdoctoral research stations. Since 2014, CQUST has undertaken over 100 projects, including national key research and development programs, national major projects, projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation and National Social Science Foundation. Scientific researches authored by university faculty and staff have obtained more than 1,000 authorized patents, and more than 1,000 papers have been included and indexed by science Citation Index (SCI) and Engineering Index (EI). Since 2012, annual research expenditure of the university has exceeded one hundred million yuan. More than that, the scientific researches have won more than 70 provincial and ministerial scientific research achievements awards, among which "Development and Application of Ultra Deepwater Semi-submersible Drilling Platform -- 'HAI YANG SHI YOU 981'" won the 2014 National Grand Prize of Science and Technology Progress, and "Key Technologies and Applications of Mechanical Grate Type Household Waste Incineration Power Generation" was awarded the Innovation Achievement of China's industry-university-research cooperation projects.

CQUST has been actively participating in cooperative educational programs and scientific research. So far it has established partnership with more than 60 universities home and abroad in regards to teaching, research and talent cultivation, including University of Illinois at Chicago, Bethel University, University of Regina in Canada, Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences in Finland, Hanze Hogeschool Groningen University of Applied Sciences in Holland, Veracruzana University in Mexico, Kyungpook National University in South Korea, Changwon national university in South Korea, National Central University in Taiwan, Chongqing University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, China University of Petroleum, Southwest Petroleum University, Xi’an University of Science and Technology, Army Logistics University, etc. Besides, as an industry-based university, CQUST has signed strategic agreements with more than 300 well-known enterprises at home and abroad in terms of collaboration between enterprises, universities and research institutes, including China National Petroleum Corporation, Sinopec, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, China Baowu Steel Group, Southwest Aluminum Group, Chongqing Iron and Steel Company, Covanta Energy, International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC), etc.
