Most of the main characters of Edens Zero, who compose the crew of the titular spaceship. Clockwise from bottom-center: Shiki, Witch (bottom-left), Homura (front), Hermit (background), Happy, Rebecca, Pino, Sister, Weisz, and Mosco.

The Edens Zero manga series features an extensive cast of characters created by Hiro Mashima. The story is set in a fictional universe called the Grand Shiki Cosmos, which comprises multiple planetary systems called "cosmoses" that the protagonists navigate using the titular spaceship. The characters consist mainly of humans, robots, and aliens, several of which utilize a magic-like power called Ether Gear to gain superhuman abilities. Multiple iterations of the same characters also appear as a result of parallel universes and alternate histories throughout the story.

Critics and readers have compared the characters' designs and attributes to those from Mashima's earlier series Fairy Tail, some of which they noted were intentionally derivative.

Creation and conception

When developing Edens Zero, author Hiro Mashima wrote several characters' storylines to tie closely to the foundation of the story, which Mashima stated would "almost never change mid-series", amidst those he introduced and changed during the story's progression;[vol. 5] he described his storytelling method as falling "somewhere in between" his previous works Rave Master, whose stories and characters he had largely worked out by the series' midway point, and Fairy Tail, where the only predetermined aspect was the backstory of protagonist Natsu Dragneel.[vol. 3] Mashima's writing approach led him to include new characters to the main cast who were not originally planned to be, while several planned characters were introduced earlier than intended, which resulted in a majority of female characters joining the main cast over male characters.[vol. 4] A number of characters are modeled after characters from Rave Master and Fairy Tail, including Happy,[vol. 3] Elsie Crimson (Erza Scarlet),[vol. 9] and Justice (Sieg Hart and Jellal Fernandes).[1] Plue, another recurring character in Mashima's manga who featured prominently in Rave Master, makes a minor appearance as well.[2] The manga also includes fictionalized versions of YouTubers whom Mashima has met.[3][vol. 7]

When discussing the series' villains, Mashima stated that his personal theme for Edens Zero was to make them "the absolute worst kind of trash possible" so that readers could look forward to their downfalls, citing Spider and Müller as examples. He was influenced to do so after receiving comments from those who sympathized with villains that he intended to be "real [pieces] of garbage" in his previous works. He added that the villains would also have their own convictions leading them to battle the protagonists.[vol. 5]

An official contest was held on Twitter between September 26 and October 31, 2020 in which readers submitted their own character designs and corresponding Ether Gear to be used in the manga.[4] The five winning entries – Callum Steelford, Lyra, Nasseh, Mirrani Lucra, and Ijuna – were included as antagonists in the story, which Mashima warned would lead to them possibly being killed off. Prior to the contest, Mashima's team was concerned with accepting entries whose abilities overlapped with those that had not yet appeared in the story. This occurred with the characters Lyra and Poseidon Nero, who share the concept of using dice; as Mashima admired Lyra's design, he changed her concept to playing cards with the artist's permission.[vol. 15]

Overview

The characters of Edens Zero are portrayed as humans, aliens, and sentient robots who inhabit a fictional universe called the Grand Shiki Cosmos (四季大宇宙, Shiki Daiuchū, lit. "Four Seasons Macrocosm").[ch. 179] This universe consists of four smaller "cosmoses", each representing a season and containing planets that the characters freely travel between: the Sakura Cosmos (桜宇宙, Sakura Kosumosu, lit. "Cherry Blossom Cosmos") for spring, the Aoi Cosmos (葵宇宙, Aoi Kosumosu, lit. "Hollyhock Cosmos") for summer; the Kaede Cosmos (楓宇宙, Kaede Kosumosu, lit. "Maple Cosmos") for autumn, and the Yukino Cosmos (雪宇宙, Yukino Kosumosu, lit. "Snow Cosmos") for winter.[ch. 179]

Described as a "space fantasy" series by Mashima,[5] Edens Zero depicts several human and alien characters that use a magic-like technique called Ether Gear (エーテルギア, Ēteru Gia) to harness their bodies' Ether – a magical power source – and gain superhuman abilities like the machines of their universe. Other characters include B-Cubers (B・キューバー, Bī Kyūbā), which are users of an online video platform based on YouTube,[5][3] and cyborgs, alternatively called O-Tech (半分機械, Ō Tekku) in the series. Multiple iterations of the same characters from parallel universes and alternate histories also feature prominently throughout the story, particularly those created by the chronophage (時食み, tokihami), a space monster that consumes the time of planets.[ch. 11]

Edens Zero crew

The main and secondary characters of the series are the crew of the Edens Zero (エデンズ ゼロ, Edenzu Zero)Edens being an acronym for "Ether Drive Eternal Navigation System" – an interstellar warship left by Ziggy as inheritance to his adoptive grandson, Shiki Granbell.[ch. 15] The crew's goal is to navigate the universe in search of Mother, both to prove her existence and have their wishes granted by her;[ch. 3, 48] as the story progresses, the crew's priorities change to defeating Ziggy after he resurrects as their enemy.[ch. 104]

Edens One crew

The Edens One (エデンズ ワン, Edenzu Wan) is a more technologically advanced version of the Edens Zero, which serves as its prototype.[ch. 102, 103] It is captained by Connor in "Universe 1" and "Universe 2", parallel universes to where Rebecca Bluegarden travels. Originally destroyed prior to the Zero crew's voyage to Sun Jewel,[ch. 49] the One is undamaged and placed under Ziggy's command from Universe 2 onward,[ch. 100, 101] with the ship's crew becoming the primary antagonistic group faced by the Zero crew.[ch. 104]

Shooting Starlight

Shooting Starlight (流星の灯, Ryūsei no Tomoshibi), an adventurers' guild on the planet Blue Garden administered by Noah Glenfield.[ch. 2] Rebecca Bluegarden and Happy begin in the story as low-ranking members, with Shiki Granbell joining early in the story. With the exception of Noah and receptionist Clarisse Layer (クラリス・レイヤー, Kurarisu Reiyā), most of the other members are indifferent or unfriendly towards Shiki's group, including Labilia Christy,[ch. 3] who later accompanies their crew.[ch. 180]

Oración Seis Galáctica

The Oración Seis Galáctica (Spanish for "Galactic Prayer Six"), known in Japanese as the Ginga Rokumashō (銀河六魔将, lit. "Galaxy's Six Demon Generals"), are a group of six powerful outlaws who are described as being capable of "crushing" planets.[ch. 32] Several members of the Galáctica play an antagonistic role against the Edens Zero crew, while others are benevolent and become the crew's allies.[ch. 106] Their membership changes over the course of the story, initially consisting of Drakken Joe, Elsie Crimson, Poseidon Nero, Deadend Crow (デッドエンド・クロウ, Deddoendo Kurō), Saintfire Nox (セントファイア ノックス, Sentofaia Nokkusu), and God Acnoella (ゴッド・アクネラ, Goddo Akunera); following the three-year timeskip, series protagonist Shiki Granbell is branded as a member by the government.[ch. 170]

Primary characters

Shiki Granbell

Voiced by: Takuma Terashima[6] (Japanese); Sean Chiplock[7] (English)

Shiki Granbell (シキ・グランベル, Shiki Guranberu) is the sole human denizen of Granbell, a robot-inhabited theme park planet from which Rebecca derives his surname.[ch. 1, 3] As the adoptive grandson of Demon King Ziggy, who found the infant Shiki while voyaging for Mother,[ch. 13] Shiki learned to use the Ether Gear "Satan Gravity" (サタングラビティ, Satan Gurabiti)[ch. 82] to perform Ziggy's gravity manipulation techniques known as the Magimech School of Gravity Martial Arts (魔械流重術, Makai-ryū Jūjutsu);[ch. 1, 125] these include altering the weight and direction of gravity for himself and others,[ch. 1] creating gravitational fields and energy spheres,[ch. 8, 25] and converting kinetic energy into gravity.[ch. 66] Shiki is characterized by his obsession with making friends, which he expresses through unprompted offers of friendship towards new people he meets.[ch. 1-3] He also suffers from a paralyzing fear of bugs.[ch. 15]

After being chased away from Granbell with Rebecca Bluegarden by the planet's dying robot community, Shiki embarks on a voyage to make 100 friends across the universe;[ch. 1] he decides to do this by finding Mother, expressing familiarity with the goddess and desiring to fulfill Ziggy's failed dream of finding her.[ch. 3, 13] He subsequently receives the Edens Zero from Elsie Crimson, inheriting Ziggy's title of "Demon King" (魔王, Maō) as the ship's captain.[ch. 14, 15] When Granbell is destroyed by a revived Ziggy, Shiki changes his motivation to having Mother restore the planet.[ch. 104] He eventually prioritizes Ziggy's defeat over finding Mother, renouncing his familial relationship with him.[ch. 169] Following the three-year timeskip, Shiki's power grows to the point where he is registered as one of the Oración Seis Galáctica.[ch. 170]

Continuing his theme of naming protagonists after seasons, Mashima chose the Japanese word meaning "four seasons" (四季, shiki) for the main character of Edens Zero to represent the culmination of his previous works.[vol. 9] In the booklet packaged with the first tankōbon volume's special edition, Mashima wrote that he often forgets to draw details of the character such as the patch on his cheek, and that he alternated between design attributes during development, such as giving him white hair instead of the final black, and whether or not Shiki would wear goggles. Other concept drawings depict Shiki wearing a bracelet that transforms into a gauntlet as an early concept for his Ether Gear.[8]

Rebecca Bluegarden

Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu[6] (Japanese); Kira Buckland[9] (English)

Rebecca Bluegarden (レベッカ・ブルーガーデン, Rebekka Burūgāden) is a B-Cuber and Shooting Starlight member from the planet Blue Garden, where she spends her childhood as an orphaned street child and beneficiary of Professor Weisz Steiner.[ch. 2] Ordinarily a cheerful girl, Rebecca becomes aggressive and uses the particle zeyo (ぜよ) when angered or flustered; in the English version, she uses the word "ducky" instead.[ch. 2] She aims to amass one million subscribers for her account, Aoneko Channel (AONEKOチャネル, Aoneko Chaneru), which suffers from low viewership due to poor-quality content,[ch. 2, 4] but gains recognition as she befriends other B-Cubers and improves her video-making skills.[ch. 29, 134] She is an expert markswoman whose accuracy skills are learned from playing first-person shooter video games.[ch. 88]

Befriending Shiki Granbell while helping him escape from his home planet,[ch. 1] Rebecca joins his search for Mother to record evidence of the goddess's existence as per his suggestion to attract viewers,[ch. 3] later deciding to wish for online fame from Mother directly.[ch. 101] After repeatedly bathing in the Edens Zero's spa, Rebecca develops her own Ether Gear called "Cat Leaper" (キャットリーパー, Kyatto Rīpā),[ch. 84] which is initially dubbed "Leaper" for enhancing her jumping power, agility, and the speed of vehicles she pilots.[ch. 64, 76] Her Ether Gear is later shown to grant her two additional abilities: one that reverses time by up to 90 seconds, which she has unknowingly possessed since childhood,[ch. 88] and causes her body to crack after excessive uses;[ch. 121] and another to mentally "leap" into parallel universes at different points in time.[ch. 172]

Mashima developed the heroine character of Edens Zero before giving her a name, developing a variety of hairstyles and outfits before settling on the final design.[8] The name "Rebecca" is taken from the Japanese band of the same name, drawing inspiration from their song "Friends" to compliment Shiki's personality.[vol. 9]

Happy

Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya[6] (Japanese); Tia Ballard[10] (English)

Happy (ハッピー, Happī) is a blue cat who serves as Rebecca's best friend and partner; the character was imported from Fairy Tail as a substitute for the series' intended mascot, Pino.[vol. 2] The narrative reimagines Happy as a feline alien from the planet Excede (エクシド星, Ekushido-hoshi) who is found by Rebecca when they are abandoned on Blue Garden during her childhood, and is later revived from a nearly fatal traffic accident after Professor Weisz Steiner transfers Happy's consciousness into an identical android body.[ch. 2, 11] Happy can transform himself into a pair of firearms called Happy Blasters (ハッピーブラスター, Happī Burasutā), which Rebecca uses to shoot non-lethal Ether bullets.[ch. 2]

Weisz Steiner

Voiced by: Hiromichi Tezuka [ja][11] (Japanese); Ray Chase (young),[12] Brook Chalmers (old)[13] (English)

Weisz Steiner (ワイズ・シュタイナー, Waizu Shutainā) is a man who practices the Ether Gear "Machina Maker" (マキナ・メイカー, Makina Meikā), allowing him to freely modify machines to different effects such as improving their performance, repairing and deconstructing them, or remodeling them into weapons.[ch. 11, 27] Shortly before the events of the series, Weisz flees from a chronophage that consumes fifty years of time from his home planet, Norma.[ch. 11] This results in two alternate versions of him that are able to co-exist as separate people: his adolescent self, an amoral but good-natured criminal; and his elderly, present-day self, who has since matured into an esteemed robotics professor.[ch. 6, 11]

The young Weisz encounters Shiki's group after ending his friendship with Sibir, his gang's leader,[ch. 5, 10] whom he wrongfully accuses of stealing a pendant belonging to Weisz's mother;[ch. 96] in the original's life, this event led Weisz to steal money from Sibir, unaware that it was a loan from Drakken Joe – known to them as "DJ Zombie" – who amputated Weisz's arm in retaliation.[ch. 91] After joining Shiki to evade Norma's police,[ch. 10] Weisz briefly leaves to indulge in the present era,[ch. 16] but quickly grows accustomed to the Edens Zero crew and remains with them,[ch. 28] eventually assuming the role of "Flame of Edens" (エデンズの炎, Edenzu no Honō) as their heavy artillery specialist.[ch. 186] During the crew's travels, Weisz fashions a superhero identity for himself named Arsenal (アーセナル, Āsenaru) with a powered exoskeleton that he customizes with his Ether Gear.[ch. 61, 62]

Mashima described the character as "one of the good guys, but still a scumbag", which he noted he does not write often for the characters of his works. He also said that Weisz's role in the story was "pretty clearly laid out", which made it "fairly easy to get [him] to do what I want".[vol. 2] His name is derived from the word "wise".[vol. 9]

E.M. Pino

Voiced by: Shiori Izawa[11] (Japanese); Sarah Anne Williams[14] (English)

E.M. Pino (EMピーノ, Ī Emu Pīno) is a miniature "anti-bot" android who generates an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that disables machinery and Ether Gear within range for short periods of time.[ch. 7, 10] Pino is built by Ziggy to become the "Light of Edens" (エデンズの光, Edenzu no Hikari), the "next generation" of androids to the Four Shining Stars,[ch. 19] but has her memory damaged by Sibir's gang when she arrives on Norma for maintenance from Professor Weisz.[ch. 7] After Shiki rescues her, Pino assigns him as her new master and joins him in the hopes of restoring her memories.[ch. 10, 16] She later desires to be reborn as a human through Mother and experience sensations that she cannot feel as an android.[ch. 42, 48]

Mashima created Pino to serve as the mascot character of the series, with her name being a pun on "EMP".[vol. 9] During development of the manga, Mashima found it increasingly difficult to include her within the first chapter, where he incorporated Happy to stand in for her. As with Weisz, Mashima said that he found it "fairly easy" to write for Pino due to her established role in the story.[vol. 2] He later called Pino his favorite character in the series, adding that he worked out "a lot" of story details for her, and that she would "probably" become an important character.[vol. 3]

Homura Kōgetsu

Voiced by: Shiki Aoki[11] (Japanese); Laura Stahl[15] (English)

Homura Kōgetsu (ホムラ・コウゲツ) is a young swordswoman from Oedo, a planet styled after Edo period Japan.[ch. 57] Abandoned at a young age by her mother, Kurenai,[ch. 47, 59] Homura was raised and mentored by Valkyrie Yuna in the use of "Soul Blade" (ソウルブレイド, Sōru Bureido), an Ether Gear that produces swords of solid Ether; she wields her swords through her "Five Sword Fencing" (五形剣, Gokeiken) techniques, giving them different forms and abilities.[ch. 21] Homura lacks a social filter due to encouragement from Valkyrie to overcome her previously shy and quiet nature,[ch. 47] which results in her habitually voicing her thoughts and intentions by mistake.[ch. 19] Following the story's three-year timeskip, she pilots a sword-wielding Knight Gear (ナイトギア, Naito Gia) mecha called the "Warrior Maid 95" (戦乙女九五式, Ikusa Otome Kyūjūgo-shiki, alt. "Warrior Maiden 95")[a] to compensate for her poor marksmanship in space and aerial battles.[ch. 182]

Initially viewing Valkyrie as only a beloved teacher during her training,[ch. 57] she embarks on a five-year search for her after Valkyrie's disappearance,[ch. 29] having come to regard her as a mother figure.[ch. 67] Homura's search leads her to join the Edens Zero crew, where she also declares her intent to duel Shiki,[ch. 21] whom she considers to be a worthy opponent for inheriting the title of "Demon King" from Ziggy, Valkyrie's undefeated rival.[ch. 28] After discovering Valkyrie's death on Sun Jewel,[ch. 58] Homura takes her place as "Sword of Edens" (エデンズの剣, Edenzu no Tsurugi) in the Demon King's Four Shining Stars,[ch. 68] later hoping to wish to Mother for a reunion with her teacher.[ch. 100]

Mashima chose the name "Homura", which means "flame" (, homura), to give an impression of the color red and fire.[vol. 9] He commented that he introduced the character earlier than he planned, originally intending to include two other male characters within the crew before her and the Four Shining Stars' appearance.[vol. 4]

Secondary characters

Demon King's Four Shining Stars

The Demon King's Four Shining Stars (魔王四煌星, Maō Shikōsei) are a group founded by Ziggy to serve aboard the Edens Zero.[ch. 15] Its primary members are female androids created by Ziggy that possess functions and powers that improve the ship's travel capacity,[ch. 16] with all four required to authorize the use of Etherion (エーテリオン, Ēterion), the ship's most confidential weapon.[ch. 69] Each android possesses a Battle Dress (バトルドレス, Batoru Doresu) form that enhances her combat skills.[ch. 71] The group temporarily disbands across the Sakura Cosmos upon Ziggy's retirement, with Shiki traveling to reassemble them in preparation of his voyage through Dragonfall.[ch. 16] The group's membership changes over the course of the story, accepting the human Homura Kōgetsu as a member after her predecessor, Valkyrie Yuna, is discovered dead on planet Sun Jewel.[ch. 68]

Witch Regret

Voiced by: Kiyono Yasuno[16] (Japanese); Laura Post[17] (English)

Witch Regret (ウィッチ・リグレット, Witchi Riguretto) is the first Shining Star introduced, being the only android to remain aboard the Edens Zero prior to its delivery to Shiki.[ch. 15] She is depicted as a kind and beautiful masked sorceress who manipulates her own Ether in a fashion similar to magic, using "Shield Ether" (シールドエーテル, Shīrudo Ēteru) to generate force fields, and "Element Ether" (属性エーテル, Zokusei Ēteru) to perform elemental attacks such as ice, air, and lightning.[ch. 71, 93] She functions as the "Shield of Edens" (エデンズの盾, Edenzu no Tate), who protects and manages the ship,[ch. 15] provides services such as massages,[ch. 16] and acts as a surrogate mother to the crew.[ch. 165] Witch sacrifices herself to protect the crew when Ziggy attempts to destroy them with Poseidon Shura's anti-matter bombs.[ch. 165, 166]

Sister Ivry

Voiced by: Yukiyo Fujii[18] (Japanese); Allegra Clark[19] (English)

Sister Ivry (シスター・イヴリィ, Shisutā Ivurii) is a dominatrix nun with a crass and masculine demeanor, speaking with the male pronoun ore in Japanese.[ch. 28, 88] She serves as the ship's medic, the "Life of Edens" (エデンズの命, Edenzu no Inochi), using the ability "Heal Atomizer" (ヒールアトマイザー, Hīru Atomaizā) to produce Ether that heals wounds and repairs "living" machines,[ch. 19] including the Edens Zero itself when all Four Shining Stars are assembled.[ch. 40] Ten years before rejoining the crew, Sister joins Shooting Starlight and embarks on a mission to rescue petrified women on the planet Guilst,[ch. 43] where she is captured and impersonated by Rogue Out's leader until Shiki's group rescues her.[ch. 26]

When talking about the character's name, Mashima said that "Sister Ivry" had no particular meaning, choosing it because he "liked the sound of it".[vol. 9]

Hermit Mio

Voiced by: Kanon Takao[20] (Japanese); Xanthe Huynh[21] (English)

Hermit Mio (ハーミット・ミオ, Hāmitto Mio) is a programmer who has the appearance and mannerisms of a young tsundere girl who enjoys fashioning clothes and playing video games.[ch. 95] As the "Mind of Edens" (エデンズの心, Edenzu no Kokoro), she uses her "Master Code" (マスターコード, Masutā Kōdo) to run the ship's computer security and repgrogram machinery to her liking.[ch. 37, 89] Hermit is introduced with her mind isolated within the virtual planet Digitalis after Müller's research team manipulates her into destroying a planet of robots and subjects her to torturous experiments for two years,[ch. 30, 40] resulting in her resentment towards all humans and any robots who sympathize with them.[ch. 33, 41] After resisting Shiki's attempts to recruit her into his crew, she eventually relents when their kindness rekindles her desire for friendship with humans, regaining her cheerful demeanor.[ch. 41]

Mashima originally assigned Hermit with the second name "Milon" (ミロン, Miron) in her character profile, but changed it after realizing he had already used the name with another character in the manga. He derived the new name, "Mio", from the Japanese word miotsukushi (澪標, "waterway marker"), which is used in waka as a pun on the phrase mi o tsukushi (身を尽くし, "devoting oneself"), something that Mashima felt represented her personality.[vol. 13]

Valkyrie Yuna

Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro[22] (Japanese); Rebeka Thomas[23] (English)

Valkyrie Yuna (ヴァルキリー・ユナ, Varukirī Yuna) is the "Sword of Edens" (エデンズの剣, Edenzu no Tsurugi), a Soul Blade user who manages the ship's armaments in Ziggy's original crew.[ch. 69] Serving as Homura's childhood mentor and guardian,[ch. 28, 47] Valkyrie leaves five years before the series' present due to prejudice they face on Homura's planet for their human-machine relationship, which prompts Valkyrie to find Homura's biological mother, Kurenai.[ch. 29, 57] Two years after taking Kurenai's place in slavery on Sun Jewel, she is betrayed by Kurenai and perishes while defending the other slave workers from a horde of alien monsters that Kurenai unleashes on the labor district.[ch. 58, 59] Following the crew's discovery of Valkyrie's death, Homura allows her remains to be enshrined on the planet and names herself as Valkyrie's successor.[ch. 68]

Mashima chose the character's name because he wanted Valkyrie to be "a darker-skinned character with a classically Japanese name".[vol. 9]

Mosco Versa-0

Voiced by: Mitsuo Iwata[24] (Japanese); Brock Powell[25] (English)

Mosco Versa-0 (モスコ=ヴェルサー零, Mosuko Verusā Rei) is an obese, white-colored android who works aboard the Edens Zero as its caretaker and Sister Ivry's verbally abused servant.[ch. 28] Debuting as a member of the mercenary squad Rogue Out who is reprogrammed to follow Sister's imposter,[ch. 19] Mosco resumes his original duties after being gunned down by Weisz and repaired by the real Sister.[ch. 28] In combat, Mosco is a galactic sumo yokozuna who specializes in tsuppari techniques,[ch. 96] but is otherwise inept outside his field of expertise;[ch. 148] his tsuppari also allows him to achieve flight, something that is questioned by other characters.[ch. 22] He has a button with an unknown function on his belly that Sister angrily forbids anyone from pressing.[ch. 28]

Mashima did not originally plan to turn Mosco into a member of the Edens Zero crew, making the decision after he "took a liking" to the character while drawing him.[vol. 4] The author based Mosco's name on the character's predetermined catchphrase, "Moscoy" (モスコイ, Mosukoi),[vol. 9] which comes from the sumo term dosukoi.[ch. 18]

Connor

Voiced by: Kenta Sasa [ja] (Japanese); Paul St. Peter (English)

Connor (コナー, Konā) is a spaceship captain from the Aoi Cosmos whom the Edens Zero crew first encounters en route to Sun Jewel.[ch. 49] He appears as a pompous and eccentric middle-aged man with expert piloting skills, using unorthodox methods to push ships beyond their usual capabilities.[ch. 175] As the story transitions through different universes, the crew meets alternate versions of Connor that only Rebecca remembers via her Cat Leaper ability: the original Connor from "Universe 1" is the Edens One's shipwrecked captain whom the Zero crew shelters;[ch. 49] in "Universe 2", he is a reluctant servant of Ziggy who is hired as his pilot;[ch. 102] and in "Universe 3", he is an escaped worker from Ziggy's robot factory on Lendard who has no knowledge of the One,[ch. 171] and eventually allies with the Zero crew against Ziggy.[ch. 175]

The character's design underwent multiple changes during development, all depicting him as thinner and more attractive than the finished version as an overweight old man, with different hairstyles varying from a receding hairline to "silky smooth" hair. After storyboarding Connor's debut appearance, Mashima received input from his editor that Connor's feats were "not very interesting" for a "good-looking" character to perform. According to Mashima, the current design received complaints from his female staff over the change.[vol. 6]

Rutherford siblings

The Rutherford siblings are a brother and sister who use wind-based Ether Gear.[ch. 77] Born to a wealthy family, they were orphaned and kidnapped by Müller during their childhood as revenge against their parents for withdrawing their financial support.[ch. 125] After being subject to Müller's inhumane experiments, the siblings were rescued by Drakken Joe's bill collectors and became indebted to him.[ch. 129] However, they renounce Drakken upon discovering him to be absorbing their life force to maintain his youth.[ch. 95] Following Drakken's defeat, the siblings join the Edens Zero crew as the "Winds of Edens" (エデンズの風, Edenzu no Kaze).[ch. 155]

Jinn / Kris Rutherford

Voiced by: Yūki Shin [ja][26] (Japanese); Jonah Scott[27] (English)

Kris Rutherford (クリス・ラザフォード, Kurisu Razafōdo), codenamed "Jinn" (ジン, Jin) after the wind spirit,[vol. 9] is an O-Tech mercenary whose Ether Gear, "Wind Rage" (ウィンドレイジ, Windo Reiji), allows him to create typhoon-like windstorms through the use of Skymech Ninjutsu (天械流忍術, Tenkai-ryū Ninjutsu).[ch. 18] His body is 60% mechanized as a result of being dismembered and rebuilt by Müller during his childhood kidnapping, which further enhances Jinn's abilities.[ch. 126] He first appears as a member of Rogue Out who obeys Sister's imposter in exchange for her help treating his younger sister, Kleene;[ch. 26] after killing the imposter, he returns as Kleene's assistant aboard the Belial Gore.[ch. 77] Jinn is portrayed as uncaring for anyone besides Kleene until he joins the Edens Zero crew, becoming more social through their interactions.[ch. 131]

Kleene Rutherford

Kleene Rutherford (クリーネ・ラザフォード, Kurīne Razafōdo) is the younger sibling, introduced as the Element 4's wind representative under the code name "Sylph" (シルフ, Shirufu).[ch. 77] Her Ether Gear, "Wind Snatch" (ウィンドスナッチ, Windo Sunatchi), creates air currents that are capable of absorbing anything, including in the vacuum of space.[ch. 75] Kleene suffers from severe mental breakdowns whenever she experiences any emotion, which are suppressed by devices on her head that indicate her mood;[ch. 92] this is later revealed to be caused by her suppressed memories of Müller forcing her to witness Jinn's dismemberment during their childhood.[ch. 126] Following a nearly fatal breakdown around Müller's presence, Kleene is relieved of her condition when Sister erases her traumatic memories,[ch. 130] keeping her devices as decorations.[ch. 131]

Laguna Husert

Laguna Husert (ラグナ・ヒューゼルト, Raguna Hyūzeruto) is a cross-dressing young man from the Aoi Cosmos who manipulates water by using the Ether Gear "Tears Lover" (ティアーズラバー, Tiāzu Rabā); combined with "Empire Ether", a native skill from his cosmos, his Ether Gear also influences others' bodies by transforming them into water whenever they cry. Laguna is a retired stage actor whose ability to naturally express emotion is stunted by his over-commitment to his roles, leaving him incapable of emoting except on command. First appearing as the Element 4's water representative, Laguna is later revealed to be an estranged member of Oasis who left to search for warriors to defeat Poseidon Nero's empire, desiring revenge for his best friend's death in an imperial raid. He joins the Edens Zero crew for this purpose following Drakken's defeat.

Couchpo

Voiced by: Satomi Arai (Japanese); Janice Kawaye (English)

Couchpo (カウチポ, Kauchipo), truly named Chloé Françoise Ai (クロエ・フランソワーズ・愛, Kuroe Furansowāzu Ai),[ch. 147] is a famous B-Cube personality and gourmand who produces food videos and reviews for her account, "MoguMogu Channel" (モグモグch., Mogumogu Chaneru).[ch. 19] Becoming acquainted with Rebecca when they and several other B-Cubers are abducted by Rogue Out,[ch. 18] Couchpo joins the Edens Zero crew during another encounter on the planet Foresta after being enamored with the ship's kitchen,[ch. 133] and provides critiques that help bolster Rebecca's popularity.[ch. 134, 171]

Labilia Christy

Voiced by: Ayumi Ayano [ja][26] (Japanese); Lizzie Freeman[28] (English)

Labilia Christy (ラビリア・クリスティ, Rabiria Kurisuti), whose name Mashima derived from the word "lovely",[vol. 9] is a Shooting Starlight member and rival B-Cuber to Rebecca who runs the aptly titled Labilia Channel,[ch. 86] a highly popular account in the Sakura Cosmos.[ch. 3] She is depicted as Rebecca's former friend who was originally inspired by Rebecca's early videos to become a content creator as a means of coping with a terminal illness, but grew to ridicule Rebecca out of irritation over her amateurish content.[ch. 178] After her channel loses its prestige during the three-year timeskip,[ch. 176] Labilia makes peace with Rebecca and is taken aboard the Edens Zero to be treated by Sister Ivry for her illness.[ch. 178]

Antagonists

Ziggy

Voiced by: Hōchū Ōtsuka[29] (Japanese); John Eric Bentley (English)

Ziggy (ジギー, Jigī) is a robot known as the "Demon King" (魔王, Maō), which serves as both his designated character role at the Granbell Kingdom theme park,[ch. 1] and his title as the Edens Zero's original captain.[ch. 15] Having broken down from old age ten years prior to the events of the story,[ch. 1] he is introduced in flashbacks as a benevolent grandfather figure to Shiki Granbell, for whom he retired to the planet Granbell raise after discovering him during a failed voyage for Mother.[ch. 14] Ziggy possesses powerful gravity abilities that are capable of crushing planets,[ch. 104] and form the basis of Shiki's "Satan Gravity" Ether Gear.[ch. 1] When Shiki's crew revisits Granbell, Ziggy reactivates with his previously lost memories as an intergalactic conqueror who intends for machines to rule over humans,[ch. 101, 133] and becomes obsessed with destroying Shiki, whom he regards as a threat to the universe.[ch. 133]

For his role as the main antagonist, Ziggy serves as benefactor and leader of the Edens One, whose crew includes the Demon King's Four Dark Stars (魔王四黒星, Maō Shikokusei), a group of male androids named Wizard (ウィザード, Wizādo), Clown (クラウン, Kuraun), Brigandine (ブリガンダイン, Burigandain), and Killer (キラー, Kirā) who are designed as "superior" successors to the Four Shining Stars.[ch. 102, 103] Following the three-year timeskip, Ziggy forms an alliance with the androids Deadend Crow and God Acnoella, two members of the Oración Seis Galáctica.[ch. 177, 182]

Mashima named the character after the song "Ziggy Stardust" by singer David Bowie, which the author listened to frequently during the manga's production; the name "Ziggy" was originally given to Shiki in the story's earliest draft.[vol. 9]

Belial Gore crew

The Belial Gore (ベリアル・ゴア, Beriaru Goa, also "Berial Goer") is a metropolitan space fortress controlled by Drakken Joe, one of the Oración Seis Galáctica.[ch. 28] It contains a city sector from the planet Guilst, which is significantly inhabited by Drakken's debtors.[ch. 72]

Drakken employs a special forces unit called the Element 4 (エレメント4, Eremento Fō), whose members keep Drakken's Ether in balance due to his unnaturally advanced age;[ch. 110] in addition to Sylph / Kleene Rutherford and Laguna Husert, its members are Fie (ファイ, Fai), a long-range sniper who ignites his rifle's bullets and his own body,[ch. 75, 89] and Daichi (ダイチ), an alien who grows branches inside others' bodies to inflict torture.[ch. 80, 90] Drakken's other operatives are Maria Slime (マリア・スライム, Maria Suraimu), an alien slime creature with the form of a young woman;[ch. 41, 76] Seth Anderson (セス・アンダーソン, Sesu Andāson), a sentient computer virus housed in a skeletal android body;[ch. 42, 83] and Diego Reyes (ディエゴ・レイエス, Diego Reiesu), an android with high physical strength, durability, and stealth technology.[ch. 71, 83]

Drakken Joe

Voiced by: Taiten Kusunoki[30] (Japanese); Armen Taylor[31] (English)

Drakken Joe (ドラッケン・ジョー, Dorakken Jō), named by Mashima after the video game Drakkhen,[vol. 9] is a money-obsessed loan shark who controls the Sakura Cosmos's criminal underworld.[ch. 70] He uses the Ether Gear "Alchemist" (アルケミスト, Arukemisuto) to transmute anything into different materials and forms of matter.[ch. 79] Born as a test subject with a life expectancy of fifteen years,[ch. 98] he keeps himself young for 200 years with a life-support machine that steals countless people's life force, which shortens their lifespans, but also deteriorates his physical health.[ch. 91, 96] While investigating the Edens Zero to restore his fortune following the planet Guilst's consumption by a chronophage,[ch. 43] Drakken takes an interest in extracting Rebecca's Ether Gear for himself, viewing her mental time travel ability as a more efficient means of maintaining his youth.[ch. 97] After Drakken subjugates the Edens Zero crew and kills Shiki,[ch. 83] Rebecca travels back in time into a parallel universe where the crew is able to survive and reverse Drakken's life-support system, which mutates Drakken into a monster before aging him into a feeble old man, leaving him to be arrested.[ch. 96-99]

Spider

Voiced by: Tatsumaru Tachibana (Japanese); Jon Allen (English)

Spider (スパイダー, Supaidā) is a "genius hacker" and tech employee in Drakken Joe's syndicate who considers himself to be one of Drakken's close comrades after receiving a passing compliment from him.[ch. 32, 43] In the Digitalis RPG Rogue Fantasia, Spider assumes an avatar identity named "Jamilov" (ジャミロフ, Jamirofu), a scythe-wielding mass murderer who targets other players and the planet's sentient NPCs alike,[ch. 32] using cheats to make himself invincible while hacking others' accounts to avoid being banned.[ch. 36, 37] Drakken has him executed after Spider is defeated and humiliated by the Edens Zero crew.[ch. 43]

Madame Kurenai

Voiced by: Mie Sonozaki[32] (Japanese); Michelle Ruff (English)

Kurenai Kōgetsu (クレナイ・コウゲツ) is Homura Kōgetsu's mother and the ruler of the planet Sun Jewel, where she is known as Madame Kurenai (紅婦人, Kurenai Fujin, lit. "Crimson Lady").[ch. 50, 57] She monitors the planet with Satellite Blaze (サテライトブレイズ, Sateraito Bureizu), also known as the Oculus Kurenai (紅の目, Kurenai no Me, lit. "Crimson Eye"),[ch. 56, 60] a laser satellite which is used to either execute criminals on-site or teleport them to the labor district;[ch. 50, 51] she also pilots the Kurenai Dragoon (紅鉄騎, Kurenai Tekki, lit. "Crimson Iron Horseman"), an Ether-resistant Knight Gear.[ch. 61]

During Homura's childhood, Kurenai abandons her to become rich at Sun Jewel's casinos under the pretense of providing for her daughter.[ch. 57] When she is freed from the labor district by Valkyrie after amassing an insurmountable debt, Kurenai selfishly marries and assassinates Sun Jewel's previous ruler to amass more wealth and power, unwittingly causing Valkyrie's death by unleashing a Stone horde on the district.[ch. 58] She is renounced by Homura and deposed upon defeat, leaving Kurenai to be taken captive by Cedric (セドリック, Sedorikku), a vengeful man previously disfigured by her.[ch. 67]

Kurenai is supported by a trio of elite warriors called the Zaiten Three (三罪天, Sanzaiten, lit. "Three Sin Devas").[ch. 61] "Benzaiten" Garrot (鞭罪天 ギャレット, Benzaiten Gyaretto) is the labor district's warden who uses a paralysis-inducing whip to torture prisoners;[ch. 52] "Kenzaiten" Nino (拳罪天 ニノ) is a B-Cuber and anime otaku who uses Ether Gear that creates solid Ether fists,[ch. 53, 64] and is modeled after German YouTuber Nino "Ninotaku" Kerl;[3] and "Fuzaiten" Baku (斧罪天 バクー, Fuzaiten Bakū) is a lion-like alien who wields a battle axe and moves at superhuman speed.[ch. 55]

Mashima named the character after the Japanese word for "crimson" (, kurenai) to reflect Homura's name, meaning "flame", as both invoked the idea of fire and the color red.[vol. 7]

Nero's empire

Poseidon Nero, one of the Oración Seis Galáctica, governs a totalitarian empire that spans the entire Aoi Cosmos.[ch. 106] Its capital is the planet Nero 1, also known as the "Temple" (神殿, Shinden),[ch. 130] where Nero and his son Poseidon Shura reside in the palace Deep Snow (ディープスノー, Dīpu Sunō).[ch. 156]

The empire's six strongest soldiers are the Oceans 6 (オーシャンズ6, Ōshanzu Shikkusu),[ch. 145] whose younger members possess Empire Ether that allows them to influence their enemies' Ether.[ch. 157] These members are Callum Steelford (カルム・スティールフォード, Karumu Sutīrufōdo), Jinn's childhood rival who manipulates mist;[ch. 154] Lyra (リラ, Rira), who alters the values of playing cards and produces random elemental attacks;[ch. 153, 155] Nasseh (ナセ, Nase), a hypnotist who creates mind-controlling electric signals;[ch. 149] and Mirrani Lucra (ミラーニ・ルクラ, Mirāni Rukura, also "Milani"), who travels between mirrors and replaces people with dark reflections of themselves.[ch. 144] The older Oceans are Cyca (サイカ, Saika), an android reverend,[ch. 130] and Fabiano (ファビアーノ, Fabiāno), who turns his body into a durable crystal.[ch. 156]

Ranked beneath the Oceans is the commando team Beast (獣王, Bīsuto), which includes Mora (モラ), a man who manipulates glue;[ch. 114] Britney (ブリトニー, Buritonī), who transforms herself into electrified or corrosive smoke;[ch. 117, 120] and Orc (オーク, Ōku), an O-Tech with a weaponized machine arm.[ch. 116] Additionally, Shura is served by Ijuna (イジューナ, Ijūna), his secretary and a former Oasis member who romantically devotes herself to Shura after he captures and tortures her;[ch. 158] her Ether Gear creates red threads that cause people who are tied together by them to fall in love, while cutting the threads turns them murderously hateful towards each other.[ch. 157]

Poseidon Nero

Poseidon Nero (ポセイドン・ネロ) is a humanoid cephalopod alien who serves as emperor of the Aoi Cosmos.[ch. 106] He possesses a set of Mother's Relics called the Empire Dice (帝国歴程, Enpaia Daisu), which allow him to predict favorable outcomes for himself through dice rolls for a price, having sacrificed his friends, family, and species to build his empire.[ch. 130, 162] He hides the existence of his Ether Gear, "Wormhole" (ワームホール, Wāmuhōru), which creates portals capable of transporting himself and other objects across different planets.[ch. 162, 163] During the Aoi War, Nero allows his empire to fall as compensation for victory against Ziggy, his former friend, but is killed after Ziggy destroys his dice and absorbs his Ether Gear for himself.[ch. 164, 167]

Poseidon Shura

Poseidon Shura (ポセイドン・シュラ) is Nero's adoptive human son and heir, and Ziggy's pupil in the use of gravity Ether Gear prior to Ziggy's discovery of Shiki.[ch. 131] In comparison to Shiki, who specializes in altering his own gravity, Shura has a greater aptitude for manipulating the gravity of objects as well as his own.[ch. 142] He is described as a "twisted deadbeat" who was never shown affection by his father, turning him violent and insane.[ch. 130, 158] In an attempt to secure power for himself, Shura conspires to eliminate Nero, Ziggy, and the Aoi Cosmos' robot population by using the All-Link System, a network on the planet Nero 66 that controls the cosmos's machinery;[ch. 136] he additionally tries to befriend Shiki, who rebuffs him for refusing to abandon his genocidal plans.[ch. 142, 143] Shura is killed when Ziggy destroys Nero 66 with a supply of 20,000 anti-matter bombs reserved for Nero's assassination.[ch. 166]

Other antagonists

Sibir

Voiced by: Yutaka Aoyama (Japanese); Bob Carter (English)

Sibir (シビル, Shibiru) is the head of Weisz's criminal gang on Norma from their youth, during which he wields an Augmenter Arm (強化アーム, Kyōka Āmu) – a mechanical gauntlet built by Weisz that enhances his strength – and pilots a Knight Gear (ナイトギア, Naito Gia) mecha that is considered to be state-of-the-art for its time.[ch. 8, 9] He is originally Weisz's benefactor and friend,[ch. 70] but the two split after Weisz falsely accuses Sibir of stealing a pendant belonging to Weisz's mother.[ch. 96] On the time-eaten Norma, Shiki's group confronts an alternate version of Sibir who comes into possession of Pino, whom he forces into his service by physically abusing her and deleting her memory so he can exploit her EMP technology from the present era.[ch. 7] They later encounter the elderly Sibir from their own timeline, who has long since reconciled with the original Weisz and works as a bartender aboard the Belial Gore,[ch. 70] and assists them during their battle against Drakken Joe.[ch. 75, 90]

Rogue Out

Rogue Out (ローグアウト, Rōgu Auto) is a mercenary squad founded an android impersonating Sister Ivry to serve as her "knights";[ch. 19] introduced as Sister herself,[ch. 20] the imposter keeps the real Sister imprisoned beneath her church headquarters on Guilst for ten years to siphon her healing powers,[ch. 26] which she uses to rebuild people into loyal soldiers and force them to fight indefinitely.[ch. 21, 25] Among her followers are Jinn, a reprogrammed Mosco, and the long-necked alien Ganoff (ガノフ, Ganofu).[ch. 18, 28] The group comes into conflict with the Edens Zero crew after being hired by Illega (イリーガ, Irīga), a local frog-like alien, to kidnap Rebecca Bluegarden and other female B-Cubers to increase his collection of petrified young women.[ch. 17] After Sister is rescued by the Edens Zero crew, the imposter is killed by Jinn for her deception.[ch. 26]

Müller

Voiced by: Yōhei Tadano (Japanese); John Snyder (English)

Müller (ミュラー, Myurā) is a mad scientist and head of Müller Royal Laboratories, a research facility on the planet Newton.[ch. 40] He first appears within flashbacks to Hermit Mio's past, where he presented himself as a kind man to manipulate Hermit into helping him complete a doomsday device with which to destroy the robot planet Hook, subsequently keeping her as a test subject for two years until his arrest.[ch. 39-41] He returns in the present day as an O-Tech under Ziggy's employment, having lost much his body in a prison escape and conducted experiments on the Rutherford siblings to rebuild himself.[ch. 125] His body is destroyed by the young Weisz Steiner, reducing him to a helpless living head.[ch. 126, 127]

Other characters

Mother

Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue[29] (Japanese); Colleen Clinkenbeard (English)

Mother (マザー, Mazā) is the creator of the universe,[ch. 48] worshiped by space explorers as the goddess of the cosmos.[ch. 3, 4] She appears as a gargantuan woman described as being larger than any planet,[ch. 3] and is capable of granting any wish to those who find her, causing them to be "born again".[ch. 14, 48] Because she exists in the hazardous outer regions of space, she is regarded as a mythical figure within the Sakura Cosmos.[ch. 13] Shiki makes it his objective in the series to prove her existence when he is disbelieved for his familiarity with her,[ch. 3] later reaffirming his goal as fulfilling Ziggy's dream of finding her.[ch. 13]

Elsie Crimson

Voiced by: Sayaka Ohara[29] (Japanese); Colleen Clinkenbeard[33] (English)

Elsie Crimson (エルシー・クリムゾン, Erushī Kurimuzon) is a benevolent member of the Oración Seis Galáctica who leads a faction of space pirates called Elsie's Pirate Crew (エルシー海賊団, Erushī Kaizoku-dan),[ch. 103, 112] notorious for conquering the "seven cosmic seas".[ch. 12] She practices the Ether Gear "Star Drain" (スタードレイン, Sutā Dorein), which allows the user to absorb planetary Ether and convert it into battle gear or energy attacks, an ability she shares with her archenemy, Justice (James Holloway).[ch. 118, 123]

Originally known as Elsie Le Lendard (エルシー=ル=レンダード, Erushī Ru Rendādo), she hails from the Kaede Cosmos as a former princess of the planet Lendard's ruling family. During her childhood, she exposed her parents' weaponeering to other nations to end the threat it posed to their cosmos, which instigated a war that orphaned her and James, her fiancé.[ch. 124, 183] She was subsequently rescued by Ziggy's crew, who entrusted her with delivering the Edens Zero to Shiki Granbell once he came of age;[ch. 14] due to her inexperience with ship maintenance, she resorted to piracy to cover expenses.[ch. 104] After rewarding Shiki with the ship, which she disguises as a cargo vessel,[ch. 12-14] she allies with him against Ziggy when the latter reactivates as an enemy of mankind.[ch. 103, 104]

Elsie's crew includes the Princess Guard (妖精の騎士, Purinsesu Gādo), her next-in-command aboard her personal vessel, the Skull Fairy (スカルフェアリー号, Sukaru Fearī-gō);[ch. 103] its members are Gowen (ゴウエン, Gōen) and Hyoga (ヒョウガ, Hyōga), a former firefighter and doctor who manipulate fire and ice, respectively.[ch. 124] The crew also includes a pirate named Behrman (ベルマン, Beruman), as well as Jesse until he is exposed as a spy from the Galactic Intelligence Agency.[ch. 124]

The character is modeled after Fairy Tail character Erza Scarlet, with her name being a portmanteau of "Erza" (エルザ, Eruza) and the word "sea" to reflect her role as a pirate.[vol. 9] Mashima commented on the relationship between her and Justice, stating that the two would suffer an unfortunate fate.[vol. 15]

Xiaomei

Voiced by: Honoka Inoue[30] (Japanese); Jenny Yokobori[34] (English)

Xiaomei (シャオメイ, Shaomei) is the series' metafictional narrator, who breaks the fourth wall to provide context and meta-commentary to the story.[ch. 5] She appears within the story itself as a resident of the rogue planet Mildian called the "Time Oracle" (時読み, Tokiyomi, lit. "Time Reader"), a "fortune-teller" with powers of omniscience granted to her by Mother, whose location is the only thing outside of Xiaomei's knowledge.[ch. 48] To avoid boring herself with complete knowledge of the future, she limits her power so that she cannot know the outcome of any battles beyond multiple possibilities.[ch. 45] She satisfies her obsession for watching combat by putting her visitors through battles in her planet's coliseum as compensation for her knowledge,[ch. 45] designing their matches to provide foreshadowing for future events.[ch. 64]

Mashima noted that he had to be careful adding Xiaomei into the main storyline due to her conceived role as an omniscient narrator, but found that because she "knows everything in the entire world", he was able to include her "without too much trouble". He added that Xiaomei had unrevealed backstory and character traits that "may gradually come to light in the future".[vol. 6]

Interstellar Union Army

The Interstellar Union Army (星系連盟軍, Seikei Renmeigun) is the cosmic government's military force, which exists to enforce the law and punish wrongdoers in the series' universe.[ch. 13, 14]

The army's six elite officers form a team called the Oración Seis Interstellar[b] – simply called the Oración Seis (星系六祈将, Orashion Seisu) in Japanese – to defeat the Oración Seis Galáctica.[ch. 106] The team forgoes all military ranks and has no internal hierarchy, allowing them the freedom to act based on personal judgment.[ch. 123] In addition to Justice, its members are "Jaguar" (ジャガー, Jagā), a captain and reformed Galáctica member who can assume a humanoid jaguar form; "Holy" (ホーリー, Hōrī), a femme fatale with an ability to melt others after a period of time; "Eraser" (イレイサー, Ireisā), who wipes objects and people from existence; "Cure" (キュアー, Kyuā), an alien officer; and "Feather" (フェザー, Fezā), who uses the same powers of observation as Noah Glendield.

Another army faction is the Galactic Intelligence Agency (銀河系諜報機関, Gingakei Chōhō Kikan, abbr. "G.I.A."), which engages in espionage.[ch. 36]

Justice

Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa (Japanese); Robert McCollum (English)

"Justice" (ジャスティス, Jasutisu) is the code name of James Holloway (ジェームス・ホロウェイ, Jēmusu Horowei), an Oración Seis Interstellar member and former prince from the planet Lendard who seeks to kill Elsie Crimson, his former fiancée, for inciting the war that destroyed their home nations and families.[ch. 124] Like Elsie, he uses the "Star Drain" Ether Gear, which he compares to a power from the dark ages called Heavenly Body Magic (天体魔法, Tentai Mahō).[ch. 123] He serves as commander of the commando carrier Angel Feather (エンジェルフェザー, Enjeru Fezā), where he is accompanied by two subordinates: "Victory" (ビクトリー, Bikutorī), who has the power to enlarge his body to gigantic proportions;[ch. 122] and Seiji Hōjō (セイジ・ホウジョウ), codenamed "Creed" (クリード, Kurīdo), a shogunate member from Oedo who shrinks others into miniature cages.[ch. 122, 159] He antagonizes the Edens Zero crew for their association with Elsie, as well as Shiki Granbell's inheritance of Ziggy's powers,[ch. 122, 123] which leads to Shiki's branding as one of the Oración Seis Galáctica three years later.[ch. 170]

The character's design changes when his Ether Gear is active, changing his hair color from white to blue, and creating a pattern of Ether markings around his right eye.[35] Mashima derived these elements from the Rave Master character Sieg Hart, following a "tradition" of using such characters that includes Jellal Fernandes from Fairy Tail.[1] Mashima chose the character's code name to reflect his sense of justice.[vol. 9]

Noah Glenfield

Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto (Japanese); Billy Kametz (English)

Noah Glenfield (ノア・グレンフィールド, Noa Gurenfīrudo) is Shooting Starlight's guild master,[ch. 43] which serves as cover for his true identity as director of the G.I.A.'s Sakura Cosmos branch.[ch. 100] He uses the Ether Gear "Eye of God" (ゴッドアイ, Goddo Ai, lit. "God Eye") to observe any person's position across space and time, which leads him to discover Rebecca's time-leaping during her childhood;[ch. 88] however, it has no effect on mechanical beings. He provides information on the Edens Zero crew to Drakken Joe,[ch. 43] covertly using Rebecca's powers against him.[ch. 88] After Rebecca becomes aware of her powers, Noah reveals his intentions and secret identity to the crew to regain their trust.[ch. 100]

Amira

Voiced by: Megumi Satō [ja] (Japanese); Emi Lo (English)

Amira (アミラ) is a G.I.A. operative who uses the shapeshifter ability "Mirror Face" (ミラーフェイス, Mirā Feisu) to copy others' appearances, personality, and memories.[ch. 36] Her subordinate, Jesse (ジェッシー, Jesshī), acts as a spy within Elsie Crimson's space pirate crew.[ch. 42] Amira is introduced on Digitalis while impersonating Homura Kōgetsu on a mission to infiltrate Drakken Joe's syndicate.[ch. 36, 37] She later assists the Edens Zero crew against Drakken after rescuing and impersonating a captive Labilia Christy.[ch. 93]

The character that Mashima developed into Amira was first conceived as the prince of Digitalis, which was changed to an imposter of Homura with a male avatar in Digitalis's virtual space. Mashima intended to reveal the imposter's identity as Justice before deciding that creating a new character would be more interesting, leading him to design Amira "real quick".[vol. 5]

Xenolith

Xenolith (ゼノリス, Zenorisu) is Ziggy's mentor and the founder of the Magimech School of Gravity Martial Arts, a set of techniques performed by gravity users in the series.[ch. 112, 125] His prowess with gravity allows him to control weight in conceptual senses, such as "lightening" pain and causing others' thoughts to "fall" into him.[ch. 125] Previously a human member of the Heavenly Knights of the Dancing Sakura (桜舞星騎士団, Ōbu Seikishidan), a historic group of heroes stated to have guarded the Sakura Cosmos during the setting's dark ages,[ch. 29] Xenolith transfers his mind into a robotic body to survive one thousand years after his death.[ch. 126] The Edens Zero crew encounter Xenolith on Foresta, his home planet in the Aoi Cosmos, where he helps train them to battle Ziggy after the Demon King's resurrection.[ch. 131, 132]

Mashima decided on Xenolith's background some time prior to the character's introduction, something the author noted was a rare occurrence in his series.[vol. 15]

Oasis

Oasis (オアシス, Oashisu) is a rebel army stationed on the desert planet Sandra that opposes Poseidon Nero's empire, becoming allies with the Edens Zero crew.[ch. 135-137] Oasis's leader is Goodwin (グッドウィン, Guddowin), a gargantuan humanoid cat and one of Rebecca Bluegarden's few early fans;[ch. 136] he replaces the previous leader, Ijuna's deceased father.[ch. 140, 157] Laguna Husert is a deserter of the group whom the other members resent for his perceived betrayal.[ch. 135] Other members include Ibaraki (イバラキ), a bōsōzoku alien; Dylan (ディラン, Diran) and Furena (フレナ), a human couple; Russo (ルッソ), a small and aggressive rabbit alien; Lizarre (リザール, Rizāru), a reptilian alien; and Gomakichi (ゴマ吉), an android.[ch. 140]

Reception

In her review of the manga's first volume for Anime News Network (ANN), Amy McNulty praised the trio of Shiki, Rebecca, and Happy, noting that "Rebecca, who initially comes across as vapid, reveals some depth by volume's end", and that Happy "rounds out the trio nicely, though the manga could use more of his humorous commentary throughout to add more levity."[5] ANN's Faye Hopper described Shiki as "more Tarzan than Luffy", feeling that his unambitious goal of exploring the universe and making friends helped enrich the story, though she added that his act of groping Rebecca "really does a number on [Shiki's] likability".[5] In contrast, ANN's Teresa Navarro found Shiki to be archetypal of other shōnen protagonists.[5] Twinfinite's Carlton McGrone praised the characters' designs for being "meticulously sketched and detailed".[36]

Several reviews for Edens Zero have commented on the characters' similar designs and personalities to those from Hiro Mashima's previous manga Fairy Tail, with comparisons to Natsu Dragneel and Lucy Heartfilia being drawn from Shiki and Rebecca, respectively,[5][36] while acknowledging that the similarities between characters such as Elsie and Erza Scarlet, as well as both series' versions of Happy, are intentional;[5][36][37][38] early online commenters have also likened Shiki's design to that of a "child" of Natsu and Gray Fullbuster.[39] Multiple reviewers felt the tie-ins to Fairy Tail suggested potentially deeper connections between both series.[5][37] Rebecca Silverman from ANN considered Shiki and Rebecca to be distinct characters from Natsu and Lucy, calling the former "a lot more aware of girls", and the latter "more cautious in her relationships".[5] Ian Wolf from Anime UK News criticized the manga's lack of original designs compared to Fairy Tail, but felt that the similarities would help readers accept the "weirder aspects of the story".[38]
