Assumption University (AU, Thai: มหาวิทยาลัยอัสสัมชัญ, RTGS: Mahawitthayalai Assumption, abbreviated ABAC), is the first international private and non-profit Catholic university in Bangkok, Thailand. Followed the spirit of His Eminence, Emile Genest August Colombet (The founder of the third oldest school in Thailand, Assumption College), Bro. Bernard Mary, Principal of ACC, initiated a private college, so called ASB in 1969 and subsequently, the Brothers of St. Gabriel in Thailand developed and transformed the school to Assumption School of Business, the english program-intensive business school. In 1972, Rev. Bro. Prathip M. Komolmas made use of a piece of land in Hua Mak to establish Assumption Business Administration College (ABAC) accredited by the Bureau of University Affairs. Rev. Bro. Sompong Jirananda was appointed the first president in 1972; serving as the college Director (President). ABAC was granted a new status as Assumption University (AU) by the Ministry of University Affairs on May 22, 1990. The naming of Assumption, besides its religious meaning in glorification of the Mother of Christ, has yet another meaning in Thai, namely ” the Abode of Abiding Knowledge” and rightly, “Assumption University” is the Seat of Wisdom[1].

History

Rev. Fr. Emile August Colombet

Assumption University was initially originated from Assumption Commercial College in 1969 as an autonomous higher education institution under the name of Assumption School of Business (It adopted the name from the preceded school "Assumption College" given by Rev. Fr. Emile August Colombet: French missionary in Siam, 1872). Under the approval of the Ministry of Education in 1972, it was officially transformed into Assumption Business Administration College or ABAC and subsequently was accredited by the Ministry of University Affairs, Thailand. Following the school's significant expansion to offer comprehensive programs in Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral Degrees, in 1990, it was granted accordingly a new status as "Assumption University" by the Ministry of University Affairs[2].

Assumption University is recognized in USA and other countries to transfer credits from the Assumption University to those partner universities abroad and graduates from the University can pursue advanced degrees at any partner schools around the world. Assumption University ,besides, is listed in the handbook of universities and other institutions of the International Association of Universities in Paris, France.[3]

The university is a non-profit institution administered by the Brothers of St. Gabriel, a worldwide Catholic religious order, founded in France in 1705 by St. Louis Marie De Montfort, devoted to education and philanthropic activities. The congregation has been cooperating with several educational institutions and government agencies in Thailand since 1901. Today, the university is an international community of scholars, enlivened by Christian inspiration with more than 50 years of educational commitment. The school takes pride in offering high quality of Thailand's first English higher education programs in business administration, law, science & technology and engineering equipped with competent and devoted lecturers, engaged in the pursuit of truth and knowledge, serving the global society, especially through the creative use of interdisciplinary approaches and advanced learning technology.

Sedes Sapientiae: The Seat of Wisdom

It is a tradition handed down for centuries that Christians venerate the Mother of Christ as "the Seat of Wisdom". (Sedes Sapientiae)[5]

According to Christian belief, Christ is the wisdom seated on the Throne. This implies, on the one hand, that the Mother of Christ is the Dwelling Place of the Supreme Wisdom of all science.

On the other hand, the university is the Alma Mater, or our Mother who is also the "Dwelling Place of Knowledge". In this context, "Assumption" which, besides its religious meaning in glorification of the Mother of Christ, has yet another meaning in Thai, namely" the Abode of Abiding Knowledge" Rightly, "Assumption University" is the Seat of Wisdom.
