Nil Ratan Dhar (January 02, 1892 - December 05, 1986) was an Indian Professor of Soil Science and Chemistry at University of Allahabad . He was popularly known as the Father of Indian Physical Chemistry.[1][2][3]He was mostly notable for the Discovery of the process of thermal and photo-chemical fixation of atmospheric nitrogen in the soil. [2] He was a founding member of The World Academy of Sciences [4] He was also a Founding Member and a former president of National Academy of Sciences (India) and the Founder Director, Sheila Dhar Institute of Soil Science, Allahabad.[1]He was the Founder Director, Sheila Dhar Institute of Soil Science, Allahabad.[1]
Early life and education
Nil Ratan Dhar was born on January 02, 1892 in Jesore now Bangladesh to the family of Prassana Kumar Dhar who was a lawyer and Nirode Mohini Dhar who was the daughter of a zaminder of Jesore (Bangladesh). [3]He obtained his DSc in 1917 from University of London. In 1919, he bagged the degree of State Doctor of Science from France and he is a beneficiary of honorary DSc from the Banaras Hindu University and the Universities of Allahabad, Jadavpur University, Gorakhpur University, Calcutta and Visva Bharati.[1]
Awards and memberships
Nil Ratan Dhar was a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences, France. He was a Foreign member of French Academy of Agriculture. He was the Founder Member of National Academy of Sciences (India) and he was the President of the Association from 1935- 1937. The Founder Member of Indian Chemical Society and he was the President from 1933-34. He was a member of Society of Biological Chemist (India), Agricultural Society of India and Indian Society of Soil Sciences and he eventually became their president. He was a Fellow of Chemical Society (London) and Royal Institute of Chemistry. In 1961, they made him the General President of Indian Science Congress Association.[1]
