Darlings is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language black comedy drama film[1][2] co-written and directed by Jasmeet K. Reen, in her directorial debut, from a screenplay by Parveez Sheikh, and produced by Gauri Khan, Alia Bhatt (in her debut production), and Gaurav Verma under the banners Red Chillies Entertainment and Eternal Sunshine Productions.[3] The film stars Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma and Roshan Mathew in the lead roles.[4][5] It is scheduled to release on Netflix, on 5 August 2022.[6][7][8]

Premise

Set against the backdrop of a conservative lower middle-class neighbourhood in Mumbai, the story explores the lives of a quirky mother-daughter duo, who while navigating through exceptional circumstances, finds courage and love as they try to find their place in the world.

Cast

Production

In March 2021, the film was announced, revealing that Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma, and Roshan Mathew had joined the cast,[9][10] with Gauri Khan, Gaurav Verma, and Bhatt serving as producers, under their respective banners Red Chillies Entertainment and Eternal Sunshine Productions.[11] The film marks Bhatt's first production venture.[12][13] Later that month, it was revealed that Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar had signed on to do the music of the film, with the former composing the songs and the latter writing them.[14][15] Principal photography began on 3 July 2021 in Mumbai, Maharashtra,[16][17][18] and wrapped up on 7 September 2021.[19][20][21][22] Though initially planned for a theatrical release, the film's distribution rights were sold to and acquired by Netflix India in February 2022, for ₹75-80 crores (US$9.6-10.3 million).[23][24]

Marketing

In March 2021, a promotional video and motion logo of the film were released.[25][26][27] A teaser poster featuring the official logo of the film was released as well.[28][29]

In May 2022, Netflix India released a promotional announcement video for the film, featuring the cast.[30][31] An announcement video revealing the release date for the teaser trailer was released in July 2022.[32] On 5 July 2022, the film's official teaser[33] and two posters were released.[34][35][36] On 25 July 2022, the film's official trailer was released; a launch event was held in support of it.[37][38]

Music

The film score is composed and produced by Prashant Pillai, while the soundtrack is written by Vishal Bhardwaj with lyrics by Gulzar, due for release under the Zee Music Company label.[39][40]

Release

Darlings is set to release on 5 August 2022 on Netflix.[41][42][43]

Following the acquisition of the film's rights by Netflix in February 2022, Red Chillies Entertainment announced that the film skipped theatrical release, and will digitally premiere as an original on the streaming platform.[30][31][44] In July 2022, the film's release date was announced as 5 August 2022.[45][46]
