Sheep Island is a small grassy area just over 1/4 mile (400 m) from the shore of Walney Island, opposite Snab Point. It is one of the Islands of Furness and is in the Borough of Barrow-in-Furness. Opinion is divided on whether it is more appropriate to refer to this area as being in Lancashire or Cumbria. The part of the historic county of Lancashire north of Morecambe Bay became part of the county (sometimes informally called an administrative county) of Cumbria in 1974. All modern maps, local government, promotional material for the area, the Post Office, and most visitors describe the area as being "Cumbria". However, some, particularly those born or brought up in the area, prefer to retain the designation "Lancashire".

The island's geographic location is latitude 54°4' North, longitude 3°12' West (OS grid ref. SD 215639). Its area is about 15 acres (6 ha).

Sheep Island is accessible on foot at low tide from either Walney, or from Piel Island - a distance of about a mile (about 1.5 km). The island is uninhabited and there is no shelter.
