2022 FIFA World Cup Group B

Group B is one of eight groups at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, each featuring four teams. The group consists of England, Iran, the United States and Wales. Matches in Group B will take place from 21 to 29 November 2022.[1] The top two teams will advance to the round of 16, while the other two teams will be eliminated.[2]

Group B has been widely described as the "group of death" for this World Cup, with it having the highest average FIFA ranking of any group, and an additional frisson of controversy given by the political hostility existing between Iran and the United Kingdom, and between Iran and the United States.[3][4][5][6][7]

  • The winners of Group B will advance to play the runners-up of Group A.
  • The runners-up of Group B will advance to play the winners of Group A.

The teams have met twice in the World Cup, in the States' famous 1–0 victory in 1950 and 1–1 draw in 2010.

Wales vs England

The teams have met 103 times, most recently in a friendly in 2020 that ended 3–0 to England. This will be their second meeting in a major tournament, the first being the group stage of UEFA Euro 2016, which ended in a 2–1 win for England. The teams have met in multiple World Cup qualifiers, including two British Home Championship matches that served as World Cup qualifiers (in 1949 and 1953) as well as the 1974 and 2006 qualification tournaments.[10]

Discipline

Fair play points will be used as tiebreakers if the overall and head-to-head records of teams are tied. These are calculated based on yellow and red cards received in all group matches as follows:[2]

  • first yellow card: minus 1 point;
  • indirect red card (second yellow card): minus 3 points;
  • direct red card: minus 4 points;
  • yellow card and direct red card: minus 5 points;

Only one of the above deductions can be applied to a player in a single match.
