Plot
Lily, Chloe, Amelia, and Rebecca are at junior prom. Chloe's brother Thomas takes Lily out onto the field where she tells him that she can not imagine leaving. They are about to kiss when Rebecca and the others tell them that their limo has arrived.
Lily leaves Rebecca and Amelia at home and takes Chloe to meet Thomas in the mountains. The three go their separate ways and Thomas is killed in a car crash on the way home. At the funeral, Chloe hugs her mom crying as Lily remains silent.
One year later the girls arrive at school stoned again. Lily talks with Noah about prom, then she and Chloe walk down the halls recalling how many times they've done so.
Lily then arranges multiple parties at various houses and then jokes about Mr Bemis. When the girls get back to the car they see their "Donkey Bong". Amelia tells Rebecca her parents are divorcing and she feels they only see her as an extension of their ego. Lily and Chloe go to see their pot dealer friend Biff who reminds them of Thomas's favourite strain “cough”.
Lily argues with the principal about what she is good and bad at doing. Chloe walks onto the field remembering the previous year and plays Thomas's last voice message. Sam consoles her, asking her to prom. Noah serenades Lily as a 'prom posal' but fails. Lily and Chloe talk in the car when Rebecca barges in and tells them that a goth girl caught her masturbating over the school librarian, Bemis.
The girls then go to a house party. Noah arrives, attempting to apologise to Lily by offering her a joint and then proceeds to make out with her. The cops arrive when the girls find Rebecca in the bathroom and make fun of her.
Lily and Sam sell prom tickets the next day when Lily finds out that Liv was traumatised. She tells her that James got her in trouble when he wrote a dirty joke on an essay. After she scolds him, Noah texts her and she goes over to his house and they fool around.
The next day Noah's ex threatens her and knocks over a goal keeper. The girls go to another house party when Chloe tells Lily she got into NYU but wants to go to UCSB. Not taking it well, Lily freaks out. Going to a room with a boy from another school, Mike, she is raped.
Chloe, Rebecca and Amelia all ditch Lily who then calls a taxi and cries all the way home. The next morning the girls all go over to her house shortly after which she flips out at Amelia and Rebecca for not telling her about Chloe's acceptance letter. The girls all then start badmouthing Lily after which she walks away. Chloe stops her and tries to tell her that she is being selfish for wanting her to be friends with people who did not know Thomas before he died.
Lily continues to be stubborn, forcing Chloe to walk away. An angry Lily drives down the street with a flashback of Thomas playing in her head but stops when she sees Rebecca at a coffee shop with her potential roommate and mocks them until a police officer comes up to her. Trying to ask her why she is illegally parked, he then notices Donkey Bong in the back. Lily panics until the officer tells her that he would not ruin her life forever but that he is going to mess it up for at least a week.
Lily is forced by her mum to smash Donkey Bong. Lily argues with her mum who tries to force her to smash the bong but after Lily walks away she does it herself and continuously swears. The girls all dodge Lily's calls, leaving her alone. Noah tries to talk to Lily but she remains stubborn, forcing him to walk away.
James talks to Lily who realizes she has been selfish. Lily's mum talks to her dad and tells him to come to her graduation if he cares. Chloe has flashbacks of her and the girls. Lily arrives at prom alone and eventually goes to the bathroom and cries. Rebecca talks to Bemis while Lily has a flashback of her and Thomas out on the field confessing that they love each other and it is not just a fling.
Lily regrets doing what she did and apologises to Chloe for being intense about Thomas. Lily tells her that the pain will never go away but that she can not mourn what she could’ve been. The two make up and go back inside. Lily apologises to Amelia and Rebecca. The girls all go back inside and Chloe kicks Mike in the balls. Noah's girlfriend breaks up with him and walks off angrily. Sam takes a picture of the girls who then bury the remains of Donkey Bong who was smashed like Jon Bong Jovi, Sean Bongery and Bong Connery.
Lily gives her graduation speech in front of her friends, then in front of the entire school and then it voice overs after her graduation. Bemis arrives and claims his real name is “Immanuel”. Noah congratulates Lily on her graduation speech and the two kiss. Lily gets a photo taken with her brother and her sister. Amelia then notices that her brownies (which she spiked with marijuana) were consumed by Rosa, who comments on how huge their heads are. The girls all look off into the great sky and distant Los Angeles as the movie comes to a close.
