Gina Mccleary calls her identical twin, Leni, several times as well as Leni's husband, Jack, but doesn't hear from either of them for thirty-six whole hours. She gets a call late in the evening from Jack who tells her that Leni is missing, having possibly been abducted, and someone broke into their stable and released the horses. Leni and Gina share a video diary which they use to talk to each other. Gina flies to Mt. Echo, Leni's hometown. Several clips from a seemingly normal childhood play followed by a flashback of one of the twins visiting the other in a hospital bed. Gina arrives at Leni and Jack's home to find a search party looking for Leni. She enters the house and meets Natasha, the babysitter Jack hired for his and Leni's daughter, Mathilda (Mattie). Gina is confused as she finds out Leni neglected to mention several important things in their diary. As dark falls, the search party is called off and Sheriff Floss and Deputy Martinez leave. Gina notices a man who was not part of the search party getting into a pickup truck. -Gina returns to her girlhood home where her ailing elderly father Victor and wheelchair user younger sister Claudia live, and goes to her and Leni's bedroom. A flashback shows Leni and Gina with their cancer-stricken mother, Maria, who gives them charm bracelets: A lion on Leni's bracelet and a dove on Gina's, in reference to each of their polar opposite personalities. In the background, their sister Claudia sees she is excluded. In the present, Gina discovers a doll in her room is missing a head and arms. Gina is upset and decides to stay at a hotel called "the Riverside". Gina finds an arm from her doll shoved in a hiding place at the bottom of a tree. The doll has a makeshift charm bracelet. A flashback shows their mother Maria's funeral. A young Gina and Leni are at the casket while their younger sister Claudia and father sit in the pews behind them. Gina is crying, whereas Leni remains stoic. As the search party gets ready the following morning, Leni's horse returns with blood on it's neck. The search party finds another horse at the bottom of a cliff. It had been shot. Also, it was observed that it's microchip had been previouly cut out. Gina later talks to Jack who tells her that he had to hire Natasha to cover for Leni who is barely around. Gina remembers when she and Leni ran away together after their mother's funeral. Mattie tells Gina that Leni has gone missing other times but not for this long. She tells Auntie Gina that the mother in her doll house is dead. Gina calls her husband, Charlie, who offers to fly out but Gina convinces him not to. Gina falls asleep in her and Leni's bed. Another flashback shows several clips from their girlhood, including one where Gina talks to Leni about getting in trouble for Leni's actions due to mistaken identity due to them being identical twins. Gina wakes up and takes several items from Leni's jewelry box. She also finds two more doll hands, one with Leni's charm bracelet. A brief flashback shows the young twins hiding in a cave. Gina goes to that cave where she finds an outfit of Leni's with a doll head. A brief flashback shows the twins running away from a burning church. Leni tells Gina they have to switch. In the present, Gina finds a note in a book left by the clothes, wishing her a happy birthday and telling her she now gets both lives but has to choose which. Flashbacks show the twins at various ages, ending with the previous year when they agree to swap lives for a year. We discover that the Gina we have been following throughout the episode is actually Leni, who has been playing the part of Gina while the person we thought was the missing Leni is actually Gina. Leni (previously thought to be Gina) dresses in the clothes of Gina (previously thought to be Leni) and heads back towards the house. She hits herself in the head with a rock. The next morning she returns to the farm. In a voice-over from the journal she tells Gina she has not played this part (the part of Leni, her true identiy) since last year. True Leni hugs her grateful daughter Mathilda. | |||||
