Yutong (officially Zhengzhou Yutong Group Co., Ltd.) is a Chinese manufacturer of commercial vehicles, especially electric buses, headquartered in Zhengzhou, Henan. Yutong also covers areas of construction machinery, real estate, and other investment businesses.[1] As of 2016 it was the largest bus manufacturer in the world by sales volume.[2]

Background

Yutong has four manufacturing bases for conventional buses, new energy buses, specialized vehicles, parts and components, and has the single largest bus manufacturing plant in the world.[citation needed] As of 2018, Yutong has a complete 5m-18m product lineup consisting of over 140 series of buses and coaches. In 2017, its sales volume of large and medium-sized buses reached 67,268 units, among them 24,865 units are new energy buses. From 2005 to 2017, Yutong buses have been exported to over 30 countries and regions, including France, UK, Australia, South Africa, Cuba, Venezuela, Chile,[3] Russia, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan (Republic of China) and so on, with a market share of over 30% in Mainland China and over 15% in the rest of the world,[4] serving with more than 210 chartered service companies and over 330 authorized service outlets.[5]

History

The company was established in 1963 as the Zhengzhou Bus Repair Factory.

  • 1963: Zhengzhou Bus Repair Factory was founded.
  • 1993: Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Co., Ltd. was founded with a sales volume of 708 units.
  • 1997: Listed in Shanghai Stock Exchange, becoming the first the listed bus company in China[6]
  • 1998: Yutong Industrial Park with an investment of CNY 400 million was put into operation.
  • 2005: Launched the overseas market strategy, becoming the first Chinese bus builder to export CKD parts.
  • 2006: Granted the Certificate for the Exemption of Import and Export Commodities From Inspection.[1]
  • 2009: Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Co., Ltd. Specialty Vehicle Branch was founded.
  • 2009: The internationally advanced cathodic electrocoating line and the first experiment center of buses and parts in China were set up.
  • 2011: Yutong TSM intelligent operating system was launched.
  • 2012: The Yutong New Energy Bus Plant was put into operation.
  • 2014: The National Research Center on Electronic Control & Safety Engineering Technology of Electric Buses is designated to be located
  • 2015: The bus manufacturing factory jointly funded by Yutong from China and Venezuelan Government was officially put into operation on December 2, 2015.[7]
  • 2015: Yutong successfully completed the world's first trial operation of an autonomous bus on the open road.
  • 2017: Sales volume of large and medium-sized buses reached 67,268 units, among which 24,865 units are new energy buses.[1]
  • 2017: Yutong exported 44 fully electric intercity buses to France.[1]
  • 2018: Yutong has set up seven service stations in Chile, in partnership to provide one-stop service, and the operational training for Yutong's full electric Buses[8]
  • 2018: Yutong won the bid for 25 hydrogen fuel cell buses order, to be delivered for the Winter Olympics in Zhangjiakou, that will take place in 2022. The buses were declared to have a range of 500 km and 10 to 15 min hydrogen refueling time and can also achieve startup at the temperature as low as -30 °C, so to be well adapted for the cold winter olympic seasonal weather.[9]
  • 2018: Yutong has placed two hydrogen fuel cell buses into trial use on the bus line 727 in Zhengzhou with a further 20 more hydrogen buses to follow, to total 22 hydrogen fuel cell buses for service in Zhengzhou (two initially, 20 to follow).[10]
  • As of 2018, in total Yutong has exported more than 64,000 buses and coaches. The sales and service network covers six regions in Europe, CIS, Latin America, Africa, Asia Pacific and the Middle East. Its products have been delivered to France, UK, Kazakhstan, Venezuela, Chile, Ethiopia, Cuba, South Africa, Nigeria, Singapore, the Philippines, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Bulgaria and other countries and regions.[11]
  • 2019: Yutong exported 100 fully electric 12-metre city buses for Santiago, Chile; operating on routes 213e and I09[12]

Yutong Bus

Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Yutong Bus”) is a large-scale modern manufacturing company specialized in the R&D, manufacturing and sales of bus products. Its main plant is located in the Yutong Industrial Park (宇通工业园) in Guancheng Hui District, Zhengzhou, and covers an area of 1.12 million square meters. The new energy bus plant of Yutong Bus which was put into operation in 2012 covers an area of over 1.33 million square meters and has an annual production capacity of 30,000 units.

In 2016 with the collaboration of a Pakistani heavy vehicle manufacturing company Master Motors, Yutong started a manufacturing plant at Port Qasim in Karachi where buses are manufactured under the brand name Yutong-Master.[13] In August 2017, the venture manufactured their 200th bus. Both of the companies are planning to export buses of European standard manufactured in Pakistan to Middle Eastern and South Asian markets.[citation needed]

Autonomous buses

Yutong has their first open road trial of an autonomous bus in 2015 and have produced models in a number of sizes since.[15] Public trials of its first generation 8-seat Xiaoyu vehicle commenced 2019 at the Boao Forum for Asia and in Zhengzhou.[16][17] Autonomous buses have also been put to use to transport workers around their large factory in Zhengzhou.

In June 2021 they claimed to have delivered 100 models of its 10-seat Xiaoyu 2.0 autonomous bus for use in Zhengzhou. The vehicle has been delivered to Guangzhou, Nanjing, Zhengzhou, Sansha, Changsha with public trials due to commence in July 2021 in Zhengzhou. [18][19]

Another core part of the Yutong Group is Yutong Heavy Industries, a manufacturer of construction equipment formed in 2003, and with about 3,500 employees and more than 120 products.[20]

Events

Yutong provided transportation services to a number of events at home and abroad including the Beijing Olympic Games, Shanghai World Expo, Belt and Road Forum, China-Africa Cooperation Forum, APEC conference, World Economic Forum, G20 Summit and other international events.[21]

Export milestones

In total Yutong exported more than 57,000 buses and coaches. Here are some export milestones of Yutong:

  1. In 2005, Yutong exported 400 buses to Cuba, which was the largest export order of China's bus industry at that time.
  2. In 2006, Yutong exported 630 buses to Cuba again.
  3. In 2007, Yutong signed a 5,348-unit order with Cuba.[22]
  4. In 2009, Yutong exported 175 ZK6118HGA city buses to Kuwait.[23]
  5. In 2010, Yutong signed an agreement of 202 double-decker buses with the Macedonian government in Skopje.[24]
  6. In 2010, Yutong signed a 490-unit order with Ghana, following the 250-unit order signed with Ghana in 2008.[25]
  7. In 2011, Yutong signed a 1,216-unit procurement contract with the Venezuelan Ministry of Transport to help them establish and complete the first BRT system in Venezuela.
  8. In 2012, Yutong signed an SKD order of over 100 units with Ethiopia, and in 2014, Yutong signed a CKD order of over 200 units with Ethiopia again.
  9. In 2012, a Yutong tourist coach has entered the Israeli market for the first time.[26]
  10. In 2013, Yutong delivered 300 LNG city buses to Peru.
  11. In 2013, Yutong signed a 160-unit order with the Philippines.[27]
  12. In 2013, Yutong delivered over 300 buses to Israel, which hit a record high in the bus import history of the country.
  13. In 2014, Yutong got a 1,500-unit bus order from Venezuela.
  14. In 2015, Yutong got an order of 1,833 units from Cuba and signed a KD contract of 2,300 buses with Venezuela.
  15. In 2015, Yutong was invited to attend the 23rd annual conference of FNTV. In addition, Yutong was also involved in the “BUS 2025” program of RATP and provided a full electric bus for trial operation, which was also showcased at the UN Climate Change Conference.
  16. In 2016, Yutong signed the Cooperative Framework Agreement on Cuban Public Transport Improvement & Bus Capacity Enhancement Program.[28]
  17. In 2016, Yutong successfully delivered 110 buses to Bulgaria.[29]
  18. By the end of 2017, Yutong totally delivered more than 3,000 buses and coaches to France, UK, Israel and other countries that applied European standards.[30]
  19. In 2017, 500 units of Yutong natural gas, city buses were delivered to Yangon, the capital city of Myanmar (Burma).[31]
  20. In 2020, Yutong delivered 10 E12 electric Single-deck buses and 10 E12DD electric Double-decker buses to the Land Transport Authority in Singapore.
