    Event Description

    [edit]

The 1000 Women in Religion Project is working to improve the coverage of women’s contributions to religious, spiritual and wisdom traditions worldwide. In support of this larger goal, the edit-a-thon at Holy Wisdom Monastery will focus on improving articles about women with a Benedictine connection. We can also help you to create a new article about a woman who is not on Wikipedia but should be such as Sr. Mary Collins, OSB, Ph.D., one of the world’s premiere liturgical theologians and a member of the Order of St. Benedict. We are also happy to help with edits on women from any religious, spiritual or wisdom tradition. We will make sure you are signed up as a Wiki-editor, cover the basics of wiki-editing and get right to work making improvements to articles on Wikipedia. There will be plenty of time for questions and time for hands on assistance. No need to be a technological expert!! Join us in our effort to address gender bias on Wikipedia by improving the coverage of women in religion on Wikipedia. DON’T FORGET YOUR COMPUTER!!

About the 1000 Women in Religion Project

    [edit]

The "1000 Women in Religion Project", a major initiative of the Women's Caucus of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature, seeks to add over 1,000 names and contributions of religious, spiritual and wisdom women to Wikipedia, the largest encyclopedia in the world. The contributions of women in all fields of work, scholarship and life, including religion and spirituality, have gone under-recognized, across time and in our present-day context. This under-recognition, which is a form of gender bias, is reflected and reproduced in our commonly used sources of knowledge – in our history books, in our news media, even in our sacred texts. The more we can document and highlight the contributions of women leaders in their religious and spiritual traditions, the more we can change the perception that women have not been leaders. The Women’s Caucus is supported in this effort to raise up notable women onto Wikipedia by the American Theological Library Association (Atla) and the Women’s Task Force of the Parliament of World Religions.
