The Black Donnellys is a American television drama which premiered on NBC in the United States and on Global Television Network in Canada during the winter of 2007. It was a midseason replacement for Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and was scheduled to air on February 26 at 10 pm. Repeats of the episodes will air on the USA Network and Bravo on March 6 and March 11 respectively. [1] The pilot episode was leaked on the internet in the summer of 2006 and is also currently available from Netflix.

The show follows four young Irish-American brothers in New York's infamous Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood and their involvement with organized crime.[2]Although the show is set in the present day, it draws heavily upon Irish history and iconic themes. The show shares many similar characteristics with other crime shows and movies but adds a fascinating new twist with a modern and exciting new cast and plot. Their story is narrated by a childhood friend, Joey "Ice Cream", in the pilot. As the pilot episode indicates, there is a clear tension between the Irish and the Italians in the neighborhood. Originally released on the internet to a rabid cult following, the show opened to great appreciation with it's outstanding pilot episode.

The show was created by Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby, Thirtysomething, Crash, Casino Royale, Flags Of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima) and written by Robert Moresco (Million Dollar Baby, Crash). The show's cast includes relative newcomers Billy Lush, Tom Guiry, Jonathan Tucker, Michael Stahl-David, Keith Nobbs, Kirk Acevedo and Olivia Wilde.

In creating the show, Haggis, a native of London, Ontario, has strongly referenced his hometown's local history about the real-life Black Donnellys and the massacre associated with their name.

Cast and characters

Plot

The Black Donnellys is perceived to be told as a story, including errors, from the point of view of one of the characters, Joey.

The story starts with how and why events came into motion, resulting in the death of the area’s crime boss, and the succession of the job to Tommy Donnelly.
