The 2022 Japanese Grand Prix (officially known as the Formula 1 Honda Japanese Grand Prix 2022) is a Formula One motor race scheduled to be held on 9 October 2022 at the Suzuka International Racing Course in Suzuka, Japan.
Background
The event is due to be held across the weekend of the 7–9 October. It will be the eighteenth round of the 2022 Formula One World Championship and the first time the event had been held since 2019, with the 2020 and 2021 races cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Valtteri Bottas enters as the defending race winner.
Championship standings before the race
Max Verstappen leads the Drivers' Championship by 104 points from Charles Leclerc, second, and teammate Sergio Pérez, third, by 106. Red Bull Racing team leads the Constructors' Championship, leading Ferrari by 137 points and Mercedes by 203 points.[2]

Verstappen can secure his second World Drivers' Championship in a row. He needs to outscore Leclerc by eight points and Pérez by six. If Verstappen wins the Grand Prix with the fastest lap, he will secure the title regardless of where Leclerc and Pérez finish. If Verstappen wins the race without the fastest lap, he will get the title if Leclerc finishes outside the top two, with Pérez's position irrelevant. If Verstappen finishes second without the fastest lap, he will be champion if Leclerc finishes outside the top four without the fastest lap, and Pérez outside the top three without the fastest lap. Verstappen can win the title if he finishes second with the fastest lap, with Leclerc outside the top four and Pérez outside the top three. If Verstappen finishes third without the fastest lap, he will get the title if Leclerc finishes outside the top six and Pérez outside the top five. By finishing third with the fastest lap, Verstappen is champion if Leclerc finishes outside the top five and Pérez outside the top four. Concluding fourth, Verstappen will be champion if Leclerc finishes outside the top seven without the fastest lap and Pérez outside the top six without the fastest lap. If Verstappen finishes fourth with the fastest lap, is champion if Leclerc finishes outside the top seven and Pérez outside the top six. Winning the race by finishing fifth, Verstappen will get the title if Leclerc concludes outside the top eight without the fastest lap, and Pérez outside the top seven without the fastest lap. Concluding six, Verstappen will win the title if Leclerc is out of the points and Pérez is outside the top eight without the fastest lap. Tyre choices
Tyre supplier Pirelli will bring the C1, C2, and C3 tyre compounds (designated hard, medium, and soft, respectively) for teams to use at the event.[4]
Track changes
The DRS detection point was moved further back before turn 16.[citation needed]
Penalties
Williams' Nicholas Latifi carries a five-place grid penalty for causing a collision with Zhou Guanyu at the previous round, the Singapore Grand Prix.[5]
