On October 13, 2022, a shooting left five people dead and two others injured in the Hedingham neighborhood of Raleigh, North Carolina.[1] The suspect, described as a white teenage male armed with a long rifle, was detained after being cornered by police at a nearby residence.[2][3][4]
Shooting
The shooting began in the Neuse River Greenway area shortly after 5 p.m. on October 13, 2022. The shooter killed five people and wounded two more.[1] One of the victims was an off-duty police officer, who was shot to death while going to work at the 6000 block of Osprey Drive.[2] One of the wounded is recovered in critical conditions.[5] One of the wounded victims was a K-9 officer, who sustained non-life threatening injuries.[6] There were a total of four crime scenes.[7]
While the suspect was still unapprehended, residents of Hedingham Neighborhood, McConnell Oliver Drive, Tarheel Club Drive, and Old Milburnie Road, were advised by law enforcement to stay indoors.[8] Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Raleigh Police Department and the BATFE, are involved with the investigation.[9] North Carolina governor Roy Cooper deployed state resources to assist at the crime scenes.[2]
At 8 p.m., authorities announced that the suspect had been contained at a residence in the area. At 9:40 p.m., it was announced that the suspect was in custody and being transported to WakeMed.[10]
Reactions
Mary-Ann Baldwin, the mayor of Raleigh, said that the residents of Raleigh need to come together, stating, "We need to support those in our community who have suffered a terrible loss, a loss of a loved one."[6]
