"Made You Look" is a song by American singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor. It was released on October 21, 2022, as the second single from her fifth major-label studio album, Takin' It Back (2022). The song was inspired by her insecurities about body image after her pregnancy, and an exercise her therapist asked her to do where she would look at herself naked for five minutes. It was announced as a single a few days prior to its release.
Background
Meghan Trainor released two major-label studio albums in 2020, her third, Treat Myself, and her fourth, A Very Trainor Christmas.[2] She struggled while creating the former, rewriting it four times as an attempt to "adapt to what's going on in the music industry" after its preceding singles underperformed.[3] After Trainor's 2014 song "Title" attained viral popularity on video-sharing service TikTok in 2021, she announced her intention to pivot to the doo-wop sound of its 2015 parent album of the same name on her fifth one, in May the following year, along with her pregnancy's influence on it.[4] In June 2022, she began teasing a song titled "Bad for Me" as the lead single from it.[5] The song was released on June 24, 2022, and features guest vocals from American singer-songwriter Teddy Swims.[6][7][8]
The song "Made You Look" was inspired by her insecurities about body image after her pregnancy, and an exercise her therapist asked her to do where she would look at herself naked for five minutes.[9] The song's music video was released on October 20, 2022, exclusive to Candy Crush Saga for 24 hours, followed by a widescale release the following day. She described it: "I knew for this music video that I wanted it to be bright, fun colors. That's my thing, always, but I wanted this to feel like (an) elevated (version of 'All About That) Bass,' more saturated."[10] It will be serviced to hot adult contemporary radio stations as the second single from Takin' It Back (2022) on October 31.[11] "Made You Look" appears as the second track on the album.[12]
Commercial performance
"Made You Look" debuted at number 95. In the UK, it peaked at number 14 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Trainor's first top 40 hit in four years. The song reached the top 10 in Ireland and Norway.
Live performances
On October 21, 2022, Trainor performed "Made You Look" live for the first time on The Today Show.[13] Three days later, she reprised the song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[14]
