Hi, I'm Gyalú, and this is my user page. My name simply refers to my primary interest: the history of Transylvania. The land of Transylvania was known in the Early Middle Ages by the name of its de facto captain, the gyula. (De Administrando Imperio: κάΓω Γύλαcode: ell promoted to code: el , "Gyula's land") Evidently, the name has connection to the Old Turkic*yula (torch) and the Hungariangyullad (ignite), but its etymology is yet to be investigated. (Rady 2001) Gelou (Template:Lang-hu, Pais 1926) was the leader of the Transylvanian Bulaqs, defeated by the Hungarian chieftain Tuhutum, according to Gesta Hungarorum. (Rásonyi 1979) So Gyula I was probably Tuhutum (Template:Lang-hu), and Gyula II, also known by his baptismal name Stephen, was probably his son Zombor. (Györffy 1983) His son, Gyula III was given the name Prokui. (Kristó 2003) He was finally defeated by Saint Stephen, and replaced with a vassal of him: Zoltán, Voivode of Transylvania. (Köpeczi 1986)
