Tell Me Sweet Something is a 2015 South African romantic comedy film starring Nomzamo Mbatha, Maps Maponyane and Thishiwe Ziqubu. The film was directed by Akin Omotoso and produced by Robbie Thorpe.[1] The film received nine nominations at the 12th Africa Movie Academy Awards and won two including Achievement in Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Thishiwe Ziqubu.[2][3]

Plot

The movie starts with three elderly couples telling their love stories and how they met then we are introduced to Moratiwa Vokwana (Nomzamo Mbatha) who lives in Johannesburg and used to be a teen sensation writing a "great African love stories." Things change when her book gets rejected by a book publishing company and her boyfriend, Norman who "left to buy milk and never came back" and never wrote a book since then. Her friend, Tashaka (Thishiwe Ziqubu) who is also a book writer convinces Moratiwa to go a club to celebrate Tashaka's book being published but Moratiwa does not want to but Tashaka advices her to socialize with people and must work on her "commitment issues." Reluctantly, she agrees. Moratiwa owns a bookstore downtown Johannesburg with her friend and co-worker, Lola. Moratiwa is at risk of losing the bookstore because of financial and electrical problems concering the bookstore. Moratiwa meets Tashaka and Katlego (Kagiso Lediga), Tashaka's alcoholic boyfriend at the club and gives her and advice on how to enjoy the night. Nat Masilo (Maps Maponyane) who is a model and his friend Gordon (Thomas Gumede) are at the same club. Nat sees Moratiwa whom she calls "the 45 foot man" and introduces himself to her and Gordon makes a move on Tashaka who shows no interest as well. Eventually, Moratiwa dances with Nat and invites her to his house and she agrees, but on one condition that Tashaka goes with her and excitedly agrees. The pair are unable to leave because Katlego who is too drunk to drive so Gordon offers to drive both Tashaka and Katlego whilst Moratiwa rides back with Nat to his house. Tashaka, Gordon and Katlego are stopped by the police and Katlego who is still very drunk hurdle insults to the cops and is arrested. Moratiwa and Nat have an awkward conversation and Nat's ex-girlfriend Sashi arrives at the door and flirts with Nat which upsets Moratiwa and leaves. Following day, the pair meet each other again on the road and Moratiwa concludes that both him and her have different personalities and that Nat does not read books but finds him attractive too. Lola suggests that there should be an event at the bookstore so that people can buy books and be able to settle some debts and Moratiwa agrees. Later, Lola bumps into Nat in the bookstore and invites him to the event. Nat attends the book event which turns out to be successful. Nat tells Moratiwa that he is the one who spray painted the post that has his face on it because he thought that Moratiwa saw him as just a self-centred celebrity, which impresses her. Moratiwa gains the confident to write another book after so many years. The scene goes back to the three elderly couples talking about their first dates. The scene goes back to Moratiwa and Robyn (Mandisa Bardill) her accountant who are disappointed that the books did not sell as much as even though the book event was a success but it did not cover debts. Tashaka and Gordon go out on date as friends. Next scene, Nat and Moratiwa take a stroll along the city. Nat tells Moratiwa that he actually studied psychology before entering the modelling career and Moratiwa reveals that she used to write love stories but stop after her break-up with her boyfriend and the reason why she hasn't found love all these years, it is not because she has "commitment issues" as people think, but because she has not found the right person. The pair go up to the rooftop, overlooking view of the city and share a passionate kiss.

The next night, Moratiwa and Nat goes out with Tashaka and Katlego, then later that night, Nat and Moratiwa go to Nat's apartment, when the pair enter the apartment they meet Sashi who reveals that she is pregnant with Nat's child. This upsets Moratiwa who has fallen for Nat and avoids speaking to him. Nat explains to her that he might not be the father but Moratiwa does not believe him. Lola asks Moratiwa if she really is over him, she responds by saying "Never been surer, if that's an actually word" revealing that she still loves him. Moratiwa bumps into Nat and the pair go for a bicycle ride around the city. Nat wants to spend time with Moratiwa but responds by saying, "Plans have been made." and walks away but later she runs towards him and tells him "Plans can be changed" and they make love to each other later that evening. Next morning, Tashaka returns to her apartment and and finds it a mess, having enough of Katlego's drinking habits, she breaks up with him and kicks him out. Moratiwa who spent the night with Nat, wakes up reads the Twitter posts showing people talking about Nat and how he abandoned "his pregnant girlfriend." This upsets Moratiwa which causes her to leave, but Nat tells her she is the one who is leaving, not him and that he cares about her very much. Moratiwa goes back home with a broken heart and later there is an electric spark at the bookstore due old electrical appliances which causes a massive fire, destorying the books and the place and this leaves Moratiwa devastated. The scene goes to the three elderly couples describing their arguments.

Moratiwa bumps into Norman, her ex-boyfriend and his son and reveals that he is in a happy relationship now. Moratiwa describes how the break-up badly affected her, Norman reveals that he felt Moratiwa was not committed enough to their relationship because of her career and her trust issues and causing him leave her. Now Moratiwa realizing that she has commitment issues, she wants to make things right with Nat, but Tashaka tells her that Nat is leaving for Vietnam and might not come back. Lola, Tashaka and Moratiwa meet up with Nat and Gordon who is in a relationship with Tashaka at the airport. Moratiwa apologizes and tries to convince Nat to not go because she wants to have a relationship with Nat but he responds by saying "Plans have been made" the words that Moratiwa said earlier and leaves for Vietnam. After Moratiwa receives an insurance payment from her bookstore that was destroyed by fire, gives her time to finish up writing the book. The book is published and released titled "Tell Me Sweet Something" loosely inspired by the events that she went through. Thee book is the best-seller. Moratiwa is signing autographs ,but as she is about sign a book, she hears the same words that were uttered earlier "plans can be changed" looks up and sees Nat and is happy to see him back. Nat professes his love for Moratiwa and Moratiwa does the same and end up kissing each other passionately. The movies ends with the three elderly couples' advices on love.
