In the Mix is a 2005 American romantic crime-comedy-drama film starring R&B/pop singer Usher. It was released in the United States on November 23, 2005, the film being targeted at the traditionally large Thanksgiving weekend audience.

Plot

While working in New York’s hottest night club disc jockey, Darrell Williams (Usher Raymond) is asked to DJ a party for his friend Frankie Jr's mob boss father Frank (who Darrell's father worked for) who is planning a surprise party for his daughter Dolly who is coming home from law school. While at Dolly's celebration Darrell ends up taking a bullet met for Frank and saves his life. Frank takes Darrell to his house and has him stay with him to allow him to heal from his gunshot wound. During this time Dolly decides she wants to go out on the town shopping but with the current attempted assassination,Frank will not allow her to go out without a bodyguard. After he tries to assign her Jackie. He tells her anyone in the house is qualified to escort her so she picks Darrell. He then accepts a job with Frank to be Dolly's escort and live at the residence. So, the next morning bright and early Dolly wakes Darrell up to go out on the town. They start the day at a Yoga class where Darrell is getting the attention of the ladies. Dolly and Darrell then go to lunch where she meets up with her girlfriends and they have Darrell come sit with them and give them advice on their men. After leaving the restaurant Dolly is almost hit by a car with Darrell saving her. Jackie witnesses this happening and tells Frank about the incident. Frank invites Dolly's boyfriend to dinner while at dinner Dolly excuses her self and goes to the garden. When Darrell comes home later after being at the club he finds Dolly in the pool taking a late night swim. She invites Darrell to join her while in the pool Dolly starts to flirt with Darrell. The next evening Dolly and Chad go out with Darrell as their driver they end up at Darrell favorite restrurant when Cherise approaches Darrell, Chad who is becoming jealous of Dolly giving Darrell attention ask her to join them. After dinner Darrell ditches Cherise and Dolly sends Chad home they end up back at Darrell's apartment/studio. Dolly and Darrell end up kissing before they are startled by Darrell's cat. Darrell tries to distance himself from Dolly because of her having a boyfriend and out of respect for her father. Darrell takes her to meet Big Momma as he is falling for Dolly. Darrell and Dolly end up going to the club that Darrell works at where they dance. While they are dancing Jackie comes in and approaches them pulling a gun on Darrell when they make a break out of the club they end up back at Darrell's friends place where they play poker with Darrell's friends. They return back to Darrell's apartment/studio where they end up hooking up with each other. They awake the next morning where they have spent the night together. During morning breakfast Dolly attempts to tell her father about her and Darrell when Fish his bodyguard comes in. She tells him they will talk later. Dolly and Darrell leave the house and go to the spa together while Dolly is in the shower Frank shows up and his men rough up Darrell. Then they take Darrell out to their car to put him in the trunk find Salvatore dead. Dolly has a meeting with her dad and agrees to end the relationship with Darrell. Dolly ends up coming back to Darrell's apartment/studio and tells him she is going to marry Chad. After she leaves Darrell answers the door and is kidnapped at gunpoint by one of Salvatore's men. Frank gets a call from Jackie stating that Dolly is with Darrell. Frank comes to the club to find Dolly and Darrell together both victims of being kidnapped. Frank Jr follows his dad to the club and ends up activating the strobe light and fog machine to distract them its during this time that Jackie uses Dolly for a shield to make Frank put down his gun. Jackie attempts to shoot Dolly and Darrell again gets shot in the shoulder taking a bullet this time for Dolly. Frank finally accepts Darrell and Dolly being together. The story picks back up one year later at the wedding reception for Darrell and Dolly. Frank gives Dolly his blessings on her marriage to Darrell.

Reception

In the Mix received negative reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes it has an approval rating of 13% based on 38 reviews, with an average rating of 3.2/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Fans may get a kick out of seeing Usher showcasing his charm on screen, but the movie itself is tone deaf and inconsequential, even by rom-com standards".[2] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted score of 31 based on 15 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[3]

In the Mix was released on VHS and DVD on March 21, 2006 by Lionsgate.
