Sunderland is an industrial city and a port in the county of Tyne and Wear in northeast England. Sunderland became a city in 1992, and has a population of around 289,000.

Located at the mouth of the River Wear next to the North Sea. Sunderland was traditionally a major centre of the shipbuilding and coal mining industries.

These industries have declined and been replaced by electronics, car building, chemicals, and paper manufacture.
