Criticism

The nomination of Ryan Kiera Armstrong in Worst Actress for her performance as Charlene "Charlie" McGee in the remake of Firestarter received public attention and backlash from the industry, who criticized the ceremony's history of causing negative side effects to the careers of child actors who starred in films nominated in the past, including Gary Coleman for On the Right Track (1981), Macaulay Culkin for Richie Rich (1994) and Jake Lloyd for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999). Julian Hilliard, who played Billy Maximoff in the Disney+ series WandaVision, said that the Razzies "crossed a line" and that the decision to nominate McGee was "...just repulsive & wrong. Why put a kid at risk of increased bullying or worse? Be better."[3][4]
